I’m one of the lucky ones. I used to live 45 minutes from SMKW and was able to go in and pick out my little axe. I was able to pick the best grain orientation. Excellent little axe.

You're right, that is lucky! I can't complain about it, for the price it's fantastic, but was worth pointing out for the sake of the review. But absolutely if you're nearby, the way to go is to get it in person! :)

You should never use a lanyard on an axe. It’s a great way to lose a chunk from your knee or leg. It’s really used to put a loop there for hanging the axe.

Not exactly free but I got one in a GI Box. last summer. It may have been my first of their mystery boxes. I find great valve in them at $30 bucks. Anyway I have no issue with the handle as am sure was cut from a different tree. I am considering adding a poly gloss finish as I have an old boy scout camp axe that I have demo-ed out many houses and stores with and it is still shiny. I tape the handles on axes and framing hammers as a means of ID and protection from little chips caused by a misshit. They happen.

Thanks for watching, I agree it's a great value! You're right, mishits happen, so it pays to take a little bit of preventative action.

could you do a follow up video on how you epoxy a wood handle and how you use a file to fix a blunt edge?
@practicalknifereviews16003 жыл бұрын
I can show the filing at least! The epoxy is quite simple, just mix the two components and slather it on!

i picked this axe up on sale as well from smkw. this is very helpful to know what to do and how well such a cheap knife will function for me. where i live there's no wood to chop, and it's not legal anyway, trees are protected in the city and state. my handle looks identical to yours, so should i epoxy it first?
@practicalknifereviews16003 жыл бұрын
That's certainly one option, though once the epoxy hardens, it might also be brittle in the event of overstrikes. If at all possible to construct some sort of collar to cushion the blow on the throat, that'd probably eliminate the need for the epoxy altogether.

Definitely! Certainly worth the money, it's a great splitter

Place the wood to be split toward the back of the block, never toward the front.

I respectfully disagree, I don’t think the grain orientation is nearly as big of a deal as you’ve made it out to be. On such small axes it really doesn’t matter that much. As long as it’s in the ballpark and not completely sideways it will be absolutely fine. Even then though, it’s just a non issue on such a small axe. If either my two gransfors small forest axes came with a similar grain orientation as this axe of yours I wouldn’t worry about it at all. Sure I’d probably prefer better considering it’s such an expensive axe but at the end of the day I wouldn’t be very upset about it.

Certainly do! Never had any close calls either in the years of felling and splitting either xD
