Solid Gold Easy Action was so far ahead of its time. It's a great example of T.Rex at their rockin' best. Many work in progress versions have been released and I think this is one of the best. Stay tuned to the end for the outtake from take 1. If you can, look out for another version from the fantastic "Bump'n'Grind" album.
The line "Take me down to my T.V. Show" is prophetic some 5 years before Marc's death.

Marc and T.Rex finished on top form with the Dandy in the underworld album, so Gloria never had any detremental effect on that. So I think its really unfair to blame her for the period when Marc lost his way. She also had a good effect on his lifestyle and I believe that Marc was in good shape and happy before his sad death. Also, as ninteresting as this version is, the original 45 remains my fav T. Rex single. Groover Mark.

Marc and T.rex made so much great stuff regardless of whether it was June or Gloria by his side. So keep a bit of marc in your heart. Im a bit of a traitor mind you, cos I loved slade as well, ha ha!

This version appears on the Thunderwing Records album "Shadowhead". It also appears on a Japanese bootleg CD "Changeling Son From Mars". The version on Shadowhead has take one before the main track. This version is from the Japanese CD which has take one after the main track. If you haven't heard them "Bump'n'Grind" and "Shadowhead", both released by Thunderwing Records, are the two best posthumous releases of T.Rex material. Hope this helps.

Nice insight to a work in progress , the band was all together at this point. This is most likely a straight run through after a couple of practices and then he;d go away contemplate, tony would influence the end product. Good job. I think the decline in music came after Tony left the band. The 5th Rex member. And a nice bloke to boot. Bowie needed TV when he had T Rex thats for sure.

if you listen to the recordings with studio chat from The Slider and Tanx sessions you'll hear Marc berating Bill and no one else. He never has a go at Mickey or Steve. Bill just got fed up with Marc's behavior and left. T.Rex were never the same again in my opinion. When you listen to the studio chat from the Dandy sessions Marc is totally respectful to Tony Newman who wouldn't have stood for anything less.

I think you nailed it there. Visconti restores Bill's input to its rightful place in his very interesting autobiography. I saw the band on the Dandy tour and it was very good indeed but not T Rex as it was with Steve Currie and Bill Legend - legends both...

It's true he has a special voice. I've tried singing some of his songs without doing an impression of him & they just don't sound so interesting. His songs are usually very simply structured & repetitive but his unique vocals do make them Rock!

I'm sure it would have!! However if this was performed by some undiscovered new wave band in 1977 John Peel would have loved it. It's a pity John and Marc didn't get a chance to renew their friendship.

Very true. After 20th Century Boy Marc Bolan kept trying to write a "hit" single instead of just writing brilliant songs which, in many cases he continued to do. New York City and I Love To Boogie were both hits in the later years but listen to Truck On (Tyke) and London Boys. Hardly Bolan classics but Marc thought they'd be hits. Thankfully Dandy proved he was on the road back.

Marc was always picking on Bill. It is hilarious, but also a bit sad. Bill was a really good drummer. When Marc lost his original team and tried to produce himself, everything suffered, not just the music.
@andytrex
@andytrex 8 жыл бұрын
Couldn't agree more. When you listen to the masters of the Electric Warrior sessions, Marc is very supportive of Bill. By the Slider sessions Bill is put down quite a bit but by the Tanx sessions Marc is out of control. Some of his comments to Bill during the sessions are disrespectful. When Bill left the band Marc told the press it was because he was going deaf!! Bill was a great drummer. Love his work on Cosmic Dancer.

Bolan between Slider and Tanx and later on went out of control, self control, he went egomaniac, couldn’t accept that others were sensational as well (Bowie et al.). He faced serious fan losses then. One of the losses was me. Oh yeah.

hearditman: And, to be honest, on 9/16/77 I was shocked and it was a sad, sad day. Remember that I on that very day went to the best press store at the railway station of my home town and bought „Melody Maker“ and all stuff I could get. Should I visit the „shrine“ in London in my old days? Sometimes I think I should. 🤔
@cjbolan8059
@cjbolan8059 5 жыл бұрын
Thomas Huth, you should visit the shrine at least once. When I go, I always choose a day in the middle of the week when no one is likely to be there. I have the place all to myself. On my first visit, I cried my eyes out. And I'm not the kind of person who cries easily. Until then, I had only known the site on the internet. Suddenly it all became very real.

@montyjones50 Thanks for your comment. Like you, I think Solid Gold Easy Action is my favourite T.Rex single. It was so far ahead of its time. I believe Gloria was good for Marc on a personal level and I love the Vixen album. Dandy was a real return to form. But my favourite tracks on that album don't feature Gloria. Much of Dandy was written in the studio as the band recorded the tracks. Marc was heading back to pure rock. Sadly we'll never know what he had in store.

I prefer this version of work to that of the official single that I do not like with too many "hey hey hey hey" (x 21), which cut the rhythm, or too many repetitions of the chorus "I can''t get no satisfaction "(already heard somewhere) while in this demo, the music is faster, more catchy, even if Bolan breaks with the style of his previous singles ...

+John Hill Yes...When I had a chance to speak to Tony V on eMail, I think I quoted it but Tony's such a gent, he didn't say anything - I think he's happy that he got that immortal name check though. I do feel that loosing Tony, Bill Legend from T Rex lost something really special. The boy in the bright blue jeans stood up on the stage, singing songs, darkness and disgrace? Something like that. The same song 'Lady Stardust' Bowie sings that the band were all together. I think they were. Bolan is Lady Stardust , I have no doubt and 'Needing TV when he's got TREX ' starts to make sense. David and Marc went way back as Pals. Every now and then David would name check him. I heard him say on a live performance of Everyone Say's Hi ( Bowie off Heathen) that the song which is about saying hello to all those that have passed on. Somehow checking in that they are OK, The single was released on the anniversary of Marc's Death or Marc's Birthday or something like that and David mentioned it saying Marc up in heaven might have planned it or such as 'He was a very clever guy Marc'. David doesn't give up praise lightly and he has such , sorry he had such good taste. I do think that if Marc had survived David and Marc would have finished the songs they started in Manchester. On a Other Faces of David Bowie CD - Typical cash in CD there's a version of the 'Mad Man' song that David and Marc started working on to premier at the end of the Marc show. Of course the TV camera men refused to film anymore because of strike action, over time was banned. That prevented us having maybe 2 or 3 Bowie/Bolan tunes. The Cuddly Toys? Glam group do a version on the CD mentioned. I think its the only Marc/David penned track that's made it on to CD. They had worked together in 1970 with Marc doing the guitar on Prettiest Star. The Marc version is so good.For me TV is genius and Marc was a short sighted mad crazy diva to let him go. Although back in the 70's Bowie passed up Tony for Diamond Dogs and I always thought that was because of TV working with Marc or something like that. I wrongly presumed Tony had not had much to do with Zinc Alloy and the hidden riders of tomorrow ( or a creamed cage in august) Bolan's last proper T Rex album and I said it to Tony and I don't think it pleased him too much. I just presumed Tony left in the middle of it all , but apparently he went back to mix the album and finish off the work. I think the album does still give up some good tracks.But then we had None TV stuff. Zip Gun ( dreadful) and Futuristic Dragon might have worked if Tony V was on the production. Tony V on Dandy In the Underworld would have put that album right up there/ Its god but it lacks in the production. I hate the tinny keyboards. If only Marc had not let Tony go...Steven

Bill Legend is indeed underrated and was definitely underpaid. When you listen to a lot of the outtakes (particularly The Slider and Tanx sessions) Bill is on the receiving end of Marc's anger when a session falls apart and It never seems to be Bill's fault. Marc Bolan was definitely on the road back when he died and dropping Gloria from T.Rex was a good move in my opinion. The sound was harder.
