FYI, the Rev. Green mentioned in the song refers to legendary blues/soul/gospel singer Al Green, who had a string of early. '70s hits including, "Take Me to the River," "Let's Stay Together," "I'm Still in Love with You," and others. He later started and was the pastor of a church in Memphis.

One of the most amazingly written and performed songs in my opinion. The "Jewish blues lover" quote is referring to himself, because he is Jewish, and he is a jazz and blues lover. He had hit a brick wall or writer's block so his producers told him to take a trip somewhere to see if he could get some inspiration. Fortunately he chose Memphis and after spending time there, he wrote not only this song but the entire album that it is on, with inspiration he received from his time in Memphis.

I remember this when i was a kid. I believe he is singing about all the good music that came before us. Even Hank Williams senior was taught guitar by a delta blues player. The music is the spiritual awakening. Awesome. History is great. Love it and thank you.

I love this song, always have. Not many react to it. You did a lovely job. It is more than just a song. It is a chronicle of a time in his life. His response of ''ma'am I am tonight'' is a Jewish boy having a brief ''come to Jesus'' moment. His voice is unique & soulful. He wrote a song about his yet unborn child, called, ''the things we've handed down''. It is a hidden gem.

He mentions being at Hollywood, which is the Hollywood Cafe. The Hollywood Café, both at this site and its original location in Hollywood, Mississippi, earned fame as a Delta dining institution but has also shared in the area’s musical history. Pianist Muriel Wilkins performed here for years, and she and the Hollywood were immortalized in the Marc Cohn hit song “Walking in Memphis.”

Many people think it was a tribute to Elvis. Actually, Marc was experiencing writers block as well as other things going on in his life. So, he went down to Memphis and found inspiration through his experiences there and that included WC Handy (blues legend) as well as Elvis and others like Muriel who inspired him when he came in and played and sang many hymns with her. Lots of great inspiration for this song. It actually made him a big music star after writing this.

This is one of my favourite songs ever (I'm 62) and not a week goes by 2hrn I don't listen to it. E. C. Handy is the self- proclaimed "Father Of The Blues" who first discovered The Blues in Tutwiler (sp) MS back 7b the early 1900s. Your enthusiasm is contagious. I'm a fan and new subscriber.

As a personal favorite, and one of my favorite Karaoke songs, I have a history. My best friend had an unconventional wedding with no first dance at the reception. For the after party we went to our favorite Karaoke bar and I sung this tune. My buddy and his new wife got up and had their first dance to my singing, it was such a great honor and joy, literally the height for a performer.

This song is autobiographical.......Marc Cohn came to Memphis for some inspiration for his music - because Memphis is the home of the blues. This one isn't country music at all... but it's all about the blues, and that's OK with me. :) A beautiful song that pays a touching tribute to Memphis, Tennessee as one of the many home of American blues music. W. C. Handy, Elvis Presley, Al Green, Beale Street, Sun Records, Muriel down at The Hollywood. It's a tribute that I would play if I could play or sing... I need to make a pilgrimage to Memphis one of these days, and walk 10 feet off of Beale. Love this song. Thank you for your reaction!

Haha! The way that article was written made it seem like it was saying Marc Cohn loved Jewish gospel music. LOL That's hilarious. What it was intending to say was that Cohn was Jewish but he loved gospel music which, of course, is Christian music and has nothing to do with Jewish music of any kind, let alone the fact there is no genre of music called Jewish Gospel. Hence the line about the woman in the night club asking him if he was a Christian and he replied "I am tonight." Also, for those who don't know, the line "...with my feet 10 feet off of Beale" is a reference to the legendary Beale Street (known as "the Home of the Blues") in the predominantly Black neighborhood where Elvis used to hang out as a teenager, soaking up the Blues and Gospel music of the Black culture. Having grown up as one of the few White kids in his own economically depressed neighborhood, Beale Street and the music scene there at the time was where he felt most comfortable. That environment was the embodiment of the "feel" and the music that reached deep into Elvis as if it was part of his soul. The lyric about the "Jungle Room", by the way, is a reference to one of the rooms inside Elvis's mansion called "Graceland".
