I’ve always been surprised at how cleanly he plays with his over-expressive fretting hand. You usually see people playing technical shit that make it look easy, super smooth, making minute and efficient movement. Marc makes sure you know that it looks difficult. Because it is.

Common Man’s Collapse was definitely way ahead of its time. Same as Exoplanet (Contortionist) and Colors (BTBAM), but you’ve gotta let em grow and respect the growth. No prog metal band is gonna stay stagnant for more than 2 albums. It’s the whole point of the genre. Gotta be progressive.

Are you talking about the part at 1:37? It sounds like a really fast tremolo/volume ducking effect, like it mutes the string or close to it every 16th note. Or something like that. Then probably some EQ or filter (probably a wah) to take off top end, maybe a neck humbucker too. Hopefully that points you in the general direction!

Not a fan of their new stuff but it’s hard to deny Marc has one of the most unique playing styles in heavy music. I can’t really think of anyone else that plays like him, even in that djent genre. Yes you have rhythmic breakdowns similar to what he does but just look at the chords he uses and comes up with (although I couldn’t speak to regarding anything past “id”). Nothing like it out there though
