I guess that insanely high action of that old Gibson gave Marc Ribot the inspiration for his cowbell-perscussion-trick. I've never before seen anything like it.

his action is set pretty high on the acoustic gibson probably because of a strong right hand (the picking hand) that is pretty aggressive and digs in for the sound.

light gauge strings i guess, i tend to use either 9s or hybrid 8s to have enough high action to slide and still be able to "shred" and use freely the pinky

The tone he is getting with hammer-on is solely because the action is ungodly high and has all that air for the string to ring.

@kipponi8 жыл бұрын
What Gibson is this ? I think L-00 from 1930th looks very old.
@sebbityseb8 жыл бұрын
Hi Kipponi, the guitar is an HG-00, converted from Hawaiian to "Spanish" (that is, it has had the bridge and nut lowered for regular playing, as the HG-00 was intended originally from playing on one's lap with a slide or bar). Heh, this particular HG is very well used. I have seen it up close in real life, and as you can see from the video here, the neck has bowed forward from years of use, and the action is well and truly higher than 1/8" over the 12th fret (probably something like 1/6"). Factor that in and Marc's playing here is even cooler, no?
@kipponi8 жыл бұрын
Ok. Thanks and so hig action it must be hefty to play...but of course the sound and attack is then better suited for Marc's style, I think.
@robertjenkins59998 жыл бұрын
plus no truss rod on that one. gibson started truss rodding the hg in '38 or '39 (not remembering right now). so the bow stays put.
@robertjenkins59998 жыл бұрын
oh, and it's tuned down a full step.

@@Fredwitrave It is amazing how different people's response can be. Certainly not like his work with Mr. Waits, but this is one of the most technically demanding arrangements I've ever seen on guitar, and simply some of the best blues.
