You two have an extraordinary talent for having important conversations. Important in the sense of life meaning. I stumbled across this programme at random when I was looking for interviews with Carlos Ghosn of which yours was undoubtedly the best. I have not (yet) visited Lebanon and have no connection to Arab cultures, but it's remarkable to see what actual conversation looks and sounds like. There is a certain kind of NON-performative, interpersonal caring. Since the Ghosn interview I went on to watch the ones with Médéa's father, Raymond Nader (I was intrigued because of what Carlos Ghosn said about his wife and St. Charbel), Ahmed Albasheer, and now this one. So on thing leads to another in a providential way. What Torbey describes here sounds like what people like Emmanuel Mounier and others were groping for in the desperation of the inter-war years -- ideas that became part of "personalilsm" and were transmitted to America by Pierre Maurin to Dorothy Day. Communal care, personal responsibility, not waiting for/depending on a (failing) government... August 4th is nearly-forgotten outside Lebanon, yet here is a very important story about what humanity is desperately groping to find already taking place in the streets of Beirut.

Those who really need their community in Lebanon stayed and some of them, like myself, came back. Not everyone is able to blend into new communities in other countries regardless of education and bilingual capability. Again, those who really Need the Lebanese community are staying and coming back and they will fight for it so they can keep their sense of belonging alive and Marc is a great inspiration to keep this fight going. Hopefully this community will win the fight and turn Lebanon into a model nation one day.
