I think one interpretation of the jibbity jabber ending is that, man views time as a constraint to be overcome. "i've got to get out of here, or i'll have another etc etc". Man wants to ascend beyond time, do something so great that they never have to try to be remembered ever again. Sort of like the pyramids, or any notable human legacy. Everyone strives for such recognition, and is terrified that if their attempt to "escape" beyond their time fails, they'll have to concoct another legacy to ride, a word to sell, a story to tell. In the video you said these are meant to be incomprehensible mockings, but it's more like, humanity is nothing but one repeating swan song and very few people come to comprehend that- that their efforts are being sunken into an unachievable goal. Nobody can surpass time, so we should learn to accept when ours comes, and when another begins.

I always took the "disintegrates into chalk" line to mean that Time interrupts Juno to mock him, as the deeper distorted voice is usually consistent with his speaking.
@sammy135_ Жыл бұрын
I agree with this interpretation, my main reason being is, as he pointed out, Zubin is Juno and Joe is Time, with Zubin normally being doubled and Joe being a single track but with a bunch of affects. At "disintegrates into chalk" is a cross fade into Joe's voice and the distortion. So I agree, I think it's time mocking him again which later leads to juno's facade starting to break (she criticizes me for being egocentric)

When you think about it, time getting Juno to believe they’re worthless only to flip to telling them they can’t even comprehend being useless out of spite then having Juno shoot the sun is so funny. Even if Juno couldn’t possibly affect the sun, wouldn’t his action still contain meaning? Even though time always wins out, can Juno really lose to time if they won’t be around to see what time does in the end? Especially if Juno lives their life through meaningful gestures of defiance? Building on this theory if time has experienced all perspectives of all men and women, then to be mad at mankind's reaction is not only a total rejection of the validity of its own experience, but implies that there's some other information or extra existence that flies in face of all the assumptions man kind has ever made, or will ever make. When our understanding is seen as punishable it's not just meaningless, it's destroying whatever other meaning this outside realm of knowledge or existence would give. It don't make no sense to me, and I be I just spit out a whole bunch of bs since it's 4 am where I'm at. I knew the song was about time but I always viewed the "do you like how my face disintegrates into chalk" line as juno trying to brag about another thing only to be interrupted by time ( also time has the deep voice) with the "disintegrates into chalk" part as time is the march towards death and therefore decomposition. As well as the fact that time interjects later in the song with the "circle in for the kill" part

It makes even more sense when you consider the alternate lyrics they sang in Variations On a Cloud Ruler of everything goes "Do you like how my face disintegrates into chalk" and starts distorting/transitioning from Juno to Time around the "disintegrates" However the Variations On a Cloud version says "Do you like how my face has learned to tick like a clock?" whitout any distortion Which makes me think maybe Juno wanted to say that he was as powerful or important as Time itself (by making his face tick like a clock) but Time doesn't like this at all and so it mocks him by interrupting him/distorting him into admiting that he doesn't really matter (he will disintegrate into chalk)

3:10 If you listen to the chorus, there are 2 people singing (I believe they are both Joe at different pitches). The first voice is singing "The ruler of everything in the end", but the other (pitched down) voice is singing "I'm the ruler of everything". I believe this line is sung by both time and someone else (possibly Juno). 4:51 Joe referred to zirconium as fools gold in a livestream. 6:49 This line could have not been said by Juno, as Juno's other lines are sung by Zubin and doubled (and later harmonized) with Zubin singing pitched up, and this line is sung by Joe with no doubling (This is also different from how they do it live, which also includes Rob on vocals).

Its odd, I had actually associated the lines like zirconium pants as being about time/clock metaphors. Cubic Zirconia being oddly popular to decorate watches, and the dancing being the way the watch moves. "Consequential enough to slip you into a trance" being the way people's anxieties about time passing makes them fixate on it. Walking and talking oddly gives me imagery of a grandfather clock swaying and making noises. Maybe it was meant as a double meaning, but yeah, some of these are sung by the "Juno" voice so interpreting it more as the vanity in life makes sense.
@C0mfyest Жыл бұрын
I'd figured most of this but the way you put it is much more concise and pertinent! That said, at 6:49 I've always seen it as time interjecting the character. Juno here says "Do you like how my face-" then gets cut off by time which implies the ultimate end of the face they're so proud of ("Disintegrates into chalk"). This also makes sense with the following line "I have a wonderful life, I have a powerful job" in which Juno still tries to grasp as his wounded pride by showing his status and "achievements" but is ultimately hit with the realization time wants him to have "She criticizes me for being egocentric", making the humorous take from time even more pertinent, since he interjected with something simple that Juno ultimately already knew (he's eventually going to die and decompose) and that made him unravel (which could also be applied to the state of the writer before making the song, perhaps something simple made him unravel too!)

This also kinda compliments Variations On A Cloud (a single released by Joe's side project Miracle Musical which was also worked on by Tally Hall members.). In one of the last verses on Variations on a cloud, it rips the lines from the chorus of Ruler of Everything and changes it, the original line being "Do you like how my face disintegrates into chalk?" Changed into "Do you like how my face has learned to tick like a clock?" Showing that Juno, despite being in a completely unrelated song to time, still seeks approval from Time, even mimicking some of it's traits.

Awesome video! Two personal add-ons: 1-At the beginning, I believe the sun is a pure representation of time at a level humans can concept rather than celestial beings. The sun defines how humans understand time, from what makes a day to the rotation for a year. As such Juno shooting the sun is his way of throwing a tantrum, he’s been forced to understand that his life is pointless, and can’t understand how he’s supposed to live now. He’s pissed off with time, when in reality time was trying to help him the whole time, showing him the futility of his vices and that he should just live life for happiness and good will. 2-A little more about the outro, when looking passed the lyrics it has always felt like the song continues on a little longer than it feels like it should, with that constant ticking in the background until all the music has faded and only the ticking remains. This is symbolic of the ticking of a clock (of more likely a metronome given that it fits the lyrical meter, both of which are measures of time), and hammers home the idea that time is the one true infinite thing. Even after the song of humanity has been sung and all is done and gone, time will remain, not stopping with our end, but infinitely marching on to an inexistent end.

I also think some cut lyrics also help paint a more complete picture. "Number your thumb, impossible sum of the monkey fist hung on a vine, organism assembly line, everything's gonna be fine, play pretend" Juno is asked to tag himself within the vast array of everything, and to note how so many beings are pushed out and act so similarly, lacking individuality. Time also mocks Juno for thinking he's any different or that he can make it better, because time is incredibly aware that all Juno is capable of is pretending that he's something he's not.

Also i don't know if you have noticed this but at the end of the song right after the final lyrics you can hear a clock ticking ominously in the background. You have to have headphones on to hear it, and i think it just really pulls together the idea that time is endless and it will go on without you no matter what, because by that point juno is gone yet time continues
@jackallope2200 Жыл бұрын
Plus, it continues going on until the end, even after the screen turns black. It's just showing that even after EVERYTHING is gone, time's mechanical hands will continue ruling until the next beginning, again, and again, and again.
@ReaverSenpai Жыл бұрын
@@jackallope2200 does it really keep existing if there is nothing left to conceptualize it? To give it a form? It's the ruler of nothing, because according to itself it's all meaningless. If anything it seems pretty full of itself. Like a hubris created by another hubris that dissolves into nothingness once that first hubris dies out. In this context it seems like it needs Juno to exist. Juno existing gives Time a reason to exist thus circling back to meaningfulness within itself and Juno. Whatever it becomes after us is nothing. Who really gets the last laugh at that point? Juno might be gone but so is the concept of Time itself.
@jackallope2200 Жыл бұрын
@@ReaverSenpai Even if the concept of time is gone, that doesn't mean it stops happening. So long as there is motion there is time, since time is just another measurement of motion. So long as there is energy there is motion, and since energy cannot be destroyed motion, and therefore time, will exist forever. If a tree falls and no one sees it, that doesn't mean it didn't happen Edit- Since I forgot to add this, I'll put it here. We are the ones who ultimately gave time meaning, so for the billions of years before us that time also existed in it didn't necessarily have a purpose, but it continued on. Time knows that the universe will just go on in a constant loop of collapsing and exploding outwards, so even if it did get attached to us it would just replace us eventually

I think basically all of this interpretation is perfect except for one thing, the explanation for the intro. This is my interpretation of: Juno was mad, he knew he'd been had So he shot at the sun with a gun Shot at the sun with a gun Shot at his wily one only friend First off I think that “Juno was mad he knew he’d been had” means essentially this: Juno of course, represents humanity as a whole, this line expresses how we as people view time as the taker of things instead of the bringer of them, we see time as something that takes souls and ends good times. Maybe Time views itself as the bringer, the creator of life and bringer of good times, it may see itself as something necessary, the one that lets the universe continue, death and everything negative that comes with time is only a side effect of it. I think that “So he shot at the sun with a gun” isn’t meant to be literal, I think it’s meant to represent how we may be angered and saddened by time, we reflect on when things used to be different and we see time as the one who ends what we love. The use of the word gun is just meant to dramatize and be a metaphor for anger. I think the sun in this line is meant to represent time, the sun to us has great meaning to do with time, the day passes as it rolls across the sky, so time and the sun are used as almost synonyms in this line. So basically this line is saying “humanity was angry at time.” Finally I think that “Shot at his wily one only friend” is just meant to strengthen the idea that time is necessary and not a bad thing, it is a friend to humanity, it helps us in many ways, we just focus on its negatives instead of its positives.
@MysteriumArcanum Жыл бұрын
Interesting interpretation, another that would make sense is that the description of Juno shooting the sun is a pointless task that isn't going to change anything. So combining these two interpretations we can see it as Juno throwing a fit over something he couldn't change.
@cdubsb3831 Жыл бұрын
The way I see it, it's the lashing out at the constant reminder. The sun doesn't control time but it does inform us of the passing of time. In our futile struggle against mortality we're despairing over the beautiful aspects of the world that are affected by time.

I’ve always loved picking apart songs like this. Music leaves so much for interpretation in a storytelling standpoint so it can be infinitely comprehended in different ways. Music is everything to whomever wants it to be, it can be transformed into other media, and it can be remembered when people’s major life events are forgotten. Music is the infinite, in concept, and will never cease to evolve and loop back to what once was in unpredictable ways. Great video.

I agree mostly, but I interpret the parts about dancing and smiling differently. I think here time is telling Juno to enjoy his life instead of being mad it will end, amd questioning its meaning. He cant understand, so he shouldnt waste what little time he has has. Instead of being angry with him, I think of the sun/time as more of a caring figure, trying to comfort him, like a loving parent may comfort a child for lashing out about something they don't understand
@kingofcomics5951 Жыл бұрын
I've always interpreted the beginning as Juno killing himself after discovering his life was meaningless and insignificant. The line "knew he'd been had" is Juno giving up after losing his argument with time. He knew he was beat. That time is right. His existence meant nothing at all and he knew nothing at all. Juno was nothing at all. The sun in the song is used as landmark earlier just like you said. But instead of representing the heavens I think it's different. Juno after learning of his infinite meangliessness shoots himself with a gun. He literally shoots TOWARDS the sun ( The landmark of the sky). He puts a gun in his mouth and shoots up to the sun after losing to time. And even after Juno is dead the song still continues on an infinite loop because Juno never mattered, the world is still spinning without him. Juno isn't special. There isn't just one Juno. Theres an infinite amount more of insignificant people being mocked by time. Thus the cycle continues. Juno dies but at the same time Juno (the concept of mankind) lives on and dies as well forever as the one thing that stays the same. But that's just my personal interpretation I really like yours as well.

Awesome video! I’m not particularly married to any one interpretation of the song, so I love collecting little scraps of interpretations that are interesting to me. Some of my favorites that I didn‘t see here and wanted to add are that “ruler” has a double meaning of “to have dominion over” like a king, as well as a literal ruler that measures things. So the phrase “ruler of everything” could mean either/both something that is in charge of everything or something that measures everything, assigning it importance. Someone contradictory to the previous interpretation, I think it can also be interesting to imagine the final verse as still being spoken by time. It’s probably unlikely, but I have always been fascinated by stories of giant and dangerously powerful, yet kind of unaware/uncaring gods. So the idea of time in the end being like “I’m just a giant ball of chaos fucking everything around me up and there’s nothing anyone can do” is a really interesting personification/perspective of time, although like I said it’s pretty unlikely that that’s the intended interpretation. The last one I wanted to add was that the “disintegrates into chalk” line could actually be time interrupting Juno to clarify that whatever his face is, how ever he planned on finishing the line, it doesn’t matter, because it’ll decompose with the rest of him in the end. As you said, his face represents the parts of himself he sees as important enough to show off, and while I can see your interpretation of the deeper voice representing him being more honest, it makes more sense to me for Juno’s emotional arc that he isn’t admitting time is right at that point in the verse, especially cause he goes right back to pushing harder against that argument right after it’s made. Anyway, like I said before, great work! Also good luck with ur existential crisis, bud, wishing you the best :)

I honestly think that if the "jibbity jabber" verse stands for Juno seeing the timeline of men, that he wants another chance to live, to change, but time knows it isn't possible, as just like him, it never would end.

9:37 If juno "observing the birds" rather than "slobbering over clovers" would mean that he was admiring and thinking about nature and the world as a whole rather than falling into fake human concepts, wouldn't the "circle in for the kill" bit also work to essentially say: No matter if you obsess over fake construct or are making an effort to look at the greater picture, the only thing you can actually see is that the universe exists and acts far over your head until you eventually run out of time and die, which is why the birds circle over you.

I feel that the song also touches into how people procastinate or waste time without improving, as Juno isn't really wealthy like he boasts when saying he has a "powerful job". His face "desintegrating into chalk" could be because he looks tired, exhausted and stressed from "pretending" he has it all together when in reality he hasn't and he just realized his time is running out (fun fact: stress can cause dry skin in some people). When Juno mentions that "if his mirror has been clearer he would had been standing so tall" I always interpreted it as Juno's insecurities and lack of improvement (characterized by the dirt covering the mirror) make him having less and less space to look at himself, but because he doesn't get himself to take the time to clean it, self reflect and improve he keeps falling lower until he realizes he's just being an illusion of the man he could had been if he learned how to value his own time. It's also said in a part that he's "slobbering on some clovers", perhaps he's not just looking for another good luck charm to temporarily make him feel worthy, but for something to eat. When Time says "I've been you, I know you, your facade is a scam" it could be Time showing Juno a better version of himself if he hasn't wasted his time, and then Juno realizing he's been "living a lie, a metamorphical scheme" is him finally realizing he's wasting away. Maybe Time (or an enlightened version of Juno, maybe even the very same that realized that Time is the ruler of everything) visited him to make him change his ways. Stupid, probably makes no sense and I'm giving it another meaning but hey, everyone sees what they need to see when in front of art c:

This may be a stretch but I interpret the line "Circle in for the kill" as a play on the phrase "Kill 2 birds with one stone" which is a phrase that is used to describe multiple issues being resolved as quickly as possible. This leads to me thinking that Time said this to show how Juno says he's "observing the birds" as an innocent act when in reality he's just "circling in for the kill" of those birds with a stone: in other words Juno says he's just enjoying things and trying to be happy when in reality he's looking to selfishly solve his issues and insecurities. Going even further, "slobbering over clovers on the side of the hill" could mean that Juno was wishing for luck to come their way, and help resolve their insecurities and problems, effectively "killing 2 birds with 1 stone" and fixing everything for them.

My personal interpretation is pretty similar. Juno is a character that represents entitled upper class citizens. Someone that flexes their wealth any chance they can. I feel like Time isn’t an actual being, but rather his subconscious as Time feels like his insecurities and laughs at Juno while constantly reminding him that he is nothing. I think before the interaction with Time happened, an incident occurred as it feels as if Juno is stuck and not moving anywhere as if held somewhere. Due to this, I think Juno dies at the end of the song and Time proves time moves on without him in the MV with the world still rotating as it always had been for centuries upon centuries. I honestly stick with my interpretation because Time isn’t really something we can talk to, but absolutely something we can personify as it has been done many times before in media as very stern and/or cruel. While others may perceive time as a good thing! Juno’s interpretation on how Time might act is more of a popular belief if Time ever had a physical presence. The way I think Juno dies is probably from a gun fight. Either surrendered by shooting up to the sky or was shot while participating in a gun fight. He’s mortally wounded, but not dead. Near the end of the songs where Juno starts spitting bars, I believe he’s starting to feel his life flash before his eyes before dying. I say this because his questions suddenly become more desperate and faster wanting to know more before he passes away
