I'm so grateful to hear someone (you) speaking truth about musical theater and Ben Platt in "Dear Evan Hansen"--the film. Many of the critics are an unknowledgeable lot. Some woman critic in the "NY Times" called the film, "manipulative." There has never been a film or a show made that doesn't try to manipulate us as the audience by evoking our own emotions. We agree to it by choosing to go to that show! Art is manipulative and evocative by its very nature. This role was built around Ben from the beginning over the four years they developed it; you're perfectly right, Marc: Ben IS Evan Hansen, and his performance in the movie is as brilliant as it was on Broadway. I hope word of mouth wakes everyone up! Exit polls show the AUDIENCE rates the movie as "A-". We, the public, know a great work when we see it!

I’ve been in hospital for 17 weeks, this is my song. The nurses know when I’m having a bad day, they know what to say. They’re like family now. They’ve had awful shifts, lost a patient suddenly. they’d been trying to save him for 4 hours. Nurse was cleaning the crash trolley, I called her over and said “you did every thing you could, it’s hard, but there’s nothing else you could of done. Do you want a hug?” She gave me the biggest hug but also shaky, she was teary eyes. She said to someone in the bay another week, i was having bad day “I’ll never forget my girl when she gave me a hug when I needed it the most.” They find me, I find them. Recently it’s just been giving hugs to so many. Yesterday every member of staff during the shift got assaulted by a patient. I gave the same nurse a hug, I’ve never seen her that stressed. Also a HCA because she’d been with this patient all day, it got too much for her and she was crying at the end of the shift. I called her over gave her a hug and kept her away from it until she settled. Today dietitian got a hug, we had a conversation. I randomly said “you saved my life”, we both got emotional as well, when she went I was in a blubbery mess but happy tears because she has saved my life. That’s why this song means so much to me 🥲

Agreed across the board. I admit I had my concerns about his age in the film, but the more I hear him in this role beyond just the soundtrack (all the different shows he's been on lately, more of the trailers, etc.) the more that's pushed aside for me. There's another musical released to film this month. Come From Away, filmed earlier this year in the Schoenfeld Theatre, has been released to Apple TV+. It'd be great to see a reaction to a portion of that film both since it's one of my favorite musicals and because I feel like this is going to end up being very overlooked, especially since it didn't go to theaters and is releasing the same month as DEH.

Loved what you said about Howie Mandel. My opinion is that once it is established that he is anti-musical theatre (his right) he should have the grace to disqualify himself as an adjudicator since he will be unable to objectively critique a vocal performance. I don't care for country western music but I can recognize what I believe to be a talented singer. This was a classic Ben Platt clean performance that was well supported by the chorus as his voice soared. I did not have the good fortune to see Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway so I hope it is well reviewed and received. And...Happy Birthday to you, Marc! At this point I believe you know all too well what I would love to see/hear in the future...YOU!

I get what you’re saying about being consistent. As a lover of musical theater I totally get it. However, I do think there is a difference between liking a heater song and liking the spectacle or the art that is musical theater. For example, if I didn’t like musical theater, if I never heard of DEH, and then I heard Ben Platt sing that song and didn’t know it was for a theater show, I would’ve went crazy and been like wow what a beautiful song. I don’t think that means they are hypocrite, I just think he likes emotional, story telling music. Doesn’t mean he’d like all the dancing and singing together and stuff like that. Idk, that is the way I see a little bit, but that’s just me. I love all the aspects of theater, it’s totally his loss.
