Disclaimer:
This style of technical analysis is based around my own personal opinion. There are so many other aspects to this sport that would take hours of video to put into an analysis like this. I try to keep them as short as possible, with some basic ideas to help all levels of skiers. My comments are based on what I personally found interesting in the race and on what I think good skiing is or isn’t. There are many great things we can learn from the world’s best racers and apply them to our freeskiing. This series of analyzing WC skiers hopefully will help you understand the most important parts of technical skiing and how we can incorporate these techniques into our own personal skiing. Enjoy!

Many thanks for this excellent analysis. Remarkable in quite a few frames how much more Hirscher was centred over his skis compared to Ligerty. I have always admired Ted’s ability to really angulate his skis, but this shows the importance of smoother, softer touch to avoid the friction and the slide you outline. Please keep this stuff coming. I love it.

Thanks for taking the time to do this. When races are won by such small margins and the top racers are all amazing skiers it makes watching WC races much more enjoyable when the technical nuances of the winning runs are pointed out.

Reilly McGlashan... I picked Hirscher. When he's on he is unbeatable.

The last few winters it is impossible to bet against hirscher, but after his performance at Levi I wasn't sure his ankle was up to skiing at this level yet. He suprised me big time.

The side by sides are interesting and help to highlight the points being mentioned by comparison. You point out individual things in technique that are very helpful to understand. All in all the side by sides are great (this one and all your others).

Nice looks and reviews of Hirscher vs. Ligety... Race-wise in every aspect Marcel was #1... while the rest of the top 15 or so was racing for second place. GS is such a demanding discipline!!!

Good stuff I like the flat skis and no friction on that particular turn... Marcel was Huge! He also used a better technique then he usually does less of his classic stivot move

I doubt it too, but I thought you'd enjoy the humor I'm sure he's had someone (coach) telling him something verrrry similar to what you said. Keep it up I love it and if we ever get any snow here I'm sure it's help my skiing too.

Good analysis. I think the key to this race was the treatment of the steep pitches. Hirscher skied this using the traditional tactic of setting up early for the pitches and taking the straight line to carry speed through the flatter sections.

Hi Reilly, I have not read through all posts however Ted's inside foot management in the video is not on par with Marcel's inside foot management. It's miles away and from my eyes it is the single most significant factor. Ted cannot release his ski with the mastery that Marcel is demonstrating and must switch and counterbalance across the hill much later. Marcel is generating angles staying centered on the ski and Ted is using a large lead change with inclination losing edge grip and losing his compact stance. The ability to release the ski suffers enormously. Ted has more to "Undo and switch" on each transition to the uphill ski than Marcel who stays flexed and centered. What are your thoughts? Coondog

Additionally, a wider stance in tech events is frequently slower. Center of mass takes longer to move inside the ski.

Excellent analysis. The question that needs to be answered is is Ted taking a different line than Hirscher because of choice or because limitations in his equipment, especially his ski boots, restrict the line he can take. I say the later influences the former.
@ReillyMcGlashan
@ReillyMcGlashan 6 жыл бұрын
I didn't see anything too obvious with his boot set up. His alignment looked ok.. I saw more of a technique thing where he is squaring up with his hips and shoulders too much through the end of the turn and leaning away from the outside ski more than hirscher. This is where hirscher was getting that rebound and where Ligety was delayed to get the ski to react because of this. His COM was moving away from the resultant line through the end of the turn thus not allowing the ski to bend as fast as hirscher was... that is what I mostly noticed from a technique standpoint. What did you see?
@epicsdrummer2010
@epicsdrummer2010 6 жыл бұрын
Reilly McGlashan a skier/racer has about 20 ms to find dynamic joint stability on the outside leg of a turn. This must happen as the skier/racer crosses the rise/fall line as they come below the gate. What I see is Ligety is not able to find dynamic stability on his outside leg and is carrying the load on his inside leg instead of using it to assist positioning on the outside ski. There is a litany of ski boot issues that can cause the problems I describe that require detailed investigation. A big one is sub optimal total ramp angle (boot board + binding ramp). In adequate free shank movement and/or too tight a boot shaft especially the power strap is another one. I get into these details in my blog The Skier's Manifesto: The Mechanics, Biomechanics and Physics of World Cup Skiing at skimoves.me. I will link youir video and discuss some of the issues I am seeing with Ligety and Hirscher. It is interesting you see problems with Shiffrin in GS. I saw boot issues right away at the start of the 2014-15 WC season. I also saw GS problems in training videos of Shiffrin last fall that a racer I am working with sent me. Keep up the good work.

Not for me to judge, I know too little about it all, but there’s someone who claims that Ligety intentionally loads his inside leg using ‘ waist steering’. You can look it up here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hojZXoOPes6aibc

Reilly, awesome breakdown -- thanks mate. Thoughts on Tommy Ford's style? His turns are siiiiiiicccck! Same with Trevor Philp. Hirscher and the Italians create almost all their edge angle with ankles / knees and of a ton of lateral separation but they never lay out over the ski = not cool / not good style.

I missed Tommys run, when I came back to second run it had already happened... 2nd run I watched top 16 i think... He obviously had a great because he was sitting in first when I tuned in. Trevor Philps run was sick! Very impressed with him, in the slow mo replay he had some really good skiing.. I loved it!

Hi, sorry for my Eng. Good analysis. Hirscher is the best skier of all time. On the other hand, what you noticed is exactly the Teds technique, on which he worked for years. This can be considered in the link kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZKQZ6qvZbOVpdE . One should not forget that with this technique he was very good, remember the olympics, in the top form, with that technique was 2 seconds ahead of everyone. Ted's time has passed, so it's not right to compare the techniques. I love Hirscera more than Ted, but it's possible that Ted's technique was better than Hirscher's. Anyway, it's pretty.

Has anyone from the Australian team contacted you to provide this kind of analysis for a price? Would be a crime if they haven’t... Question: Do you think we could benefit from a winter competition that involved us, New Zealand and any Antipodean nations that wanted to be involved in all disciplines including slalom, gs, downhill, combined and super g??? When do they get to compete and actually have a chance of winning? Certainly not chasing the world cup in Europe. There are mountains and runs in all countries that could support the longer races, gonna tell me a downhill that starts at Karels and goes down Funnelwebb and finishes in the village wouldn’t be awesome??? We could have a competition among nations, only national teams and we could also bring out junior (Europa Cup) racers fron Europe to compete. Let’s get some interest around ski racing in Australia
@ReillyMcGlashan
@ReillyMcGlashan 4 жыл бұрын
No one has every contacted me and I don't think anyone in those positions are looking for that either. About the question, they do have pretty much these competitions you are talking about, SL and GS FIS races that majority only Aussie and NZ compete at. Funnel web is too narrow for a FIS course these days I am pretty sure.

you cant compare Hirscher with Ligety. as great as Ted is, Hirscher is in a different league. Over 60 world cup races won...on the way to beat Ingemar stenmark. 6 overall world cup wins....IN A ROW. So, why compare anyone or anything?
