March 27, 2024 (piano manipulations with Borderlands Granular and Octatrack)

This video features a piano sample processed in Borderlands Granular on the iPad. The manipulated sample is also processed on a separate channel in AUM with tape delay, gates, filters, and other effects for additional texture. The same original sample is loaded on the Octatrack and played back on 2 tracks for additional layering. Drums come courtesy of Audiomodern's Playbeat App, and Fugue Machine is sequencing an instance of Slate & Ash Landforms in Ableton Live over USB MIDI with the iConnectivity Audio4c interface.

Wow, this is so beautiful! Never heard of Borderlands Granular. So is this some kind of app that does all this Granular miracles when you input a sample? And what exactly does the Octatrack do here?

Thank you! Yes, borderlands lets you load samples or record new ones to process with the granular engine. The octatrack is playing back the same samples that are in Borderlands, but with different effects.

Another nice video and ambient jam. I have been thinking about getting an Octatrack,but I still have not understood what it can do better than Ableton. I have also heard it’s very difficult.. What is so special about it for you ?

Basically, the Octatrack is a 7-8 track "Live" (Track 8 can be a Mastertrack). The learning curve is really brutal but once you get the hang of it, the Octa is really good for live use. To make it easier to use, as I've learned, you should really just take it step by step. It may take 1-2 weeks to get the basics down, but it helps enormously for further progress. It's definitely worth buying the Octa.

@@dominikhaering thanks for your reply. I bought the Audio4c and it’s great! One more question.. what stand are you using for your iPad 11 ? I may have to get an Octatrack one day, but for the studio because I’m not doing live.

Thank you! It’s a tough question to answer. I wouldn’t say it does anything “better” than Ableton. I wouldn’t even say Ableton Live is a comparison for it. It’s just a totally different way of approaching sound-shaping and sample manipulation. The most unique thing about it, in my opinion, is the sequencing system. “Parameter locking” is probably the main thing elektron has become known for. It allows you to add motion, chance, and variation in a very intuitive and easy way, by simply moving the parameters you want to alter while holding the step on the sequencer. It takes time to learn, but it’s my favorite instrument of all time, and well worth the effort.

I have loved for a long time, what you're achieving with the iPad, for live or recorded music. But the Oktatrak always remains. Is there no iPad or software alternative to this? I've never had or used an Octatrak, so excuse my lack of knowledge.

Personally, I just really value the tactile/physical experience of the Octatrack's sequencer. It's hard to beat the purpose-built buttons and functions. You could probably customize and map an open surface to imitate it in Drambo or Loopy Pro, but I think it would take a really long time to build anything similar on iPad and then you'd only have certain aspects/elements ready to go. It's a vast, deep machine full of interconnected parts.

bro, would it be a bad idea to barely get into an Octatrack Mk2? I feel like inside my daw, I lack the ability to create interesting percussion loops and drum loops. That’s the main reason I want an octatrack, to chop percussion/drum breaks and sequence them while adding some ambiences in the back… my only hesitation is that they’ll release a MK3 😅

It’s never a bad idea to buy gear that allows you to do what you’re trying to do. If it furthers your practice, it’s worth it. There are always going to be new shiny things coming out…if you keep waiting for the next thing, you’ll never make music! I love my Octatrack mk2 and will never sell it, even if a mk3 comes some day.

Hi Andrew, one question. Can you do the same on the new interface presonus quantum es4 ? As i can see, nobody comments if we can share audio between the iPad and the MBpro as you do now with their two usb c, i cant understand why the audio 4c is the only interface that can do it. Hi Javier, according to the product manual I just saw, the 2nd usb port on the es4 is only for power. It does not pass audio or midi data, so it won’t work like the Audio 4c. I’m not sure why other manufacturers don’t do this!
