Hello Tristan. I am enjoying all your videos and have joined the Classics Book Club too. I give a big vote yes for your Shakespeare series laid out in this video. I am comfortable with only a few plays and you instruction and insights would be wonderful.

So engaging and captivating! I love your program. The summer I was 9yo and left on own for couple hours first time, I took down my mother's small leatherbound Midsummer Night's Dream and read my first play lying on stomach on the living room carpet. I loved it! 12 years later I saw it one night alone, in Regents Park.

I would love a course on Shakespeare. I live in a city that has a world renown Shakespearean festival and every summer I get to go watch 3 or 4 Shakespeare plays in a recreated Globe theater. Two years ago they did a 6 hour play of all three Henry VI. It was long but so cool.

Hello Tristan! I really enjoyed the Month of March's Book Club Book. Unfortunately, I was not able to attend the Zoom meeting in the second half of March of the Three Musketeers b/c the discussion occurred during business hours in my part of the world. I would have liked to watch that. In the future, you may wish to record the Zoom discussions and then post them on KZbin so those who can't attend live can watch it later. Also, I have not yet seen the reading schedule for Resurrection. Has that been done and if so, can you post it on KZbin. Keep up the good work. I really enjoyed History of the English Language. Have a great day!

Werther was interesting, but did not work for me. I wanted to tell Werther to "get hold of yourself, have some pride man." I am very much enjoying Resurrection, hilarious on law and religion. Looking forward to your thoughts. Enjoyed the history of the English Language. My husband is reading Macbeth for the first time and finding it easier by reading it aloud, just as suggested. Next he will read Hamlet, for history play, Henry V. Engineering background and decided on his own to read Shakespeare, better late than never.

Yeah ! A series of videos on Shakespeare 😃 I’ve been planning to read one play a year (so far I’ve read Othello, The Tempest, Julius Caesar and A Midsummer Night’s Dream) so I’m glad you picked Romeo and Juliet 😊 Your work helps a lot (all the more so as English is not my mother tongue - I’m French). Thanks again Tristan, and take care !

Hi Tristan! Another great video - thanks so much for each one! I wasn't sure where to post this question - I hope you don't mind me doing it here..... I've always wondered why many classic authors use the hyphen in regard to dates, places and people's names. For example, "Jane lived in the town of ---shire in the year 18--". I was also reading "The Count of Monte Christo" last year (the best book ever!!) and as I remember it, there was a very minor character who was only mentioned once or twice, named the Countess ---------". As she was only referred to, I wondered why Dumas would do this?? Also - have you read "The Vicar of Wakefield"? I've just finished it, and loved it! In a couple of Victorian novels I've previously read, the characters had been reading it, so when I found it in a favourite used bookstore, I pounced! I'd love to hear your "take" on it - the ending is quite funny with all of the twists, and the image of the family portrait is hilarious! Thanks again for bringing the classics to life and for making reading and exploring new books so enjoyable!! - Louise, Australia
@tristanandtheclassics6538
@tristanandtheclassics6538 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Louise! Thanks for this comment, it is a really good question. Surprisingly there is no definitive answer for the 'hyphen' question. However, there are two main theories. 1) The author inserts dates like 17__ , or Madame C__, to add to the realism of the story. Readers may be duped into believing that the story is in fact a retelling of true events. 2) The author uses the hyphen to avoid being accused of libel. Authors do get many of their ideas and characters from real persons, in real places at real times. Occluding the details may have been a a way to say, "Look this is only fiction, so don't try pinning it on real persons or places. We actually see this in films nowadays with the comment: Any likenesses to real persons or places featured in this film are not deliberate etc... Count of Monte Cristo is Awesome. I have Vicar of Wakefield and hope to go through it soon. Now you've made me even more excited to get stuck in.😀👍

All books sound interesting. You always introduce me to new classics, and I always learn something new. Unfortunately I haven't read with the book club The Radezky March nor The three Musketeers because at the moment I am struggling with health issues, hopefully I will read them sooner rather than later, of course I saved the videos so I can use them as a reference. Oh I would like a course about Shakespeare, an author that I would like to read but I am very intimidated by Really appreciate your hard work. Thanks Tristan ☺️

9:40 the sorrows of young werther were actually inspired by a real-life story of one of Goethe's former friend/acquaintance, Karl Wilhelm Jerusalem, who shot himself with a friend's (Johan Christian Kestner) two pistols (Jerusalem saying he was going for a hunting trip) after the girl he was in love with rejected him to the point of forbidding Jerusalem of ever coming into her house again. Like Werther he didn't die until the next day, and had a burial without a priest or ceremony, which was common for people who committed suicide at the time. Tristan believe it or not I have just found my copy of Woman in White! I started it last night and finally had to turn the lights off about 1am! Yikes, is this going to give me a run with this months' classic ! I wanted to share one more thing with you: I have had the opportunity to go through your previous programs and in one of them you said that many times it was difficult for those of us in the US to send you books because you had to pay fees on your end. I have friends in France that I send things to through Amazon UK. All I do is; log into Amazon UK (so I will have 2 separate accounts), my friends put what they need into the Amazon 'wish list" (which on my screen is located on the right side and is a drop down) they have started a wish list and I order FROM Amazon UK. Amazon folks worry about the the dollars to euros conversion and my Visa gets the bill. If you want to have people be able to gift you books this is a very easy way to do it. Just remember, after you have been ordering on Amazon UK to log off and log on to Amazon US. I hope this makes sense!!! I am definitely joining you with both the Shakespeare and the English language program. The first one on English language was amazing !!!! Thank you so much.

Brilliant! Thanks for this. I did have a suspicion that the problem would lay in my own pronunciation. Now I know. I am so pleased. May I ask, if one pronounces the 'th' as 't', does that mean Goethe and Werther still rhyme? How is the 'oe' in Goethe sounded? Thank you for helping me out here.😀👍
