This my friends is precisely why you should not dismiss the need for woodwinds in a marching band. And not just token woodwinds like most HBCUs do since power is the number one obsession. There are so many wonderful sounds you can bring into the picture when you have a strong group of piccolos, clarinets and saxophones. Point being, there is not one other HBCU band that could do this song justice simply because they are overloaded on the power instruments and not properly balanced with complimentary woodwinds. And this is coming from a former lower brass player. Kudos to the 100 for always prioritizing sound quality.

I totally agree but Norfolk State could and BCU too

I been listening to Norfolk State, their sound is quality, but the music selections are critical. Balance sound with their program, and their arrangements focus not only on brass, but on woodwinds too. Once you have heard the Marching 100, your ears are trained for Steak and Lobster not Spam and Baloney. McDonald's happy meals don't fill my appetite, I need a balanced meal. This is classic Marching 100, the Sound of Experience... Hubba 100 #IJS

@@tinajohnson2000 Those habitually out of tune woodwinds could never. Please don’t ever put Norfolk and FAMU woodwinds in the same sentence again. I’m from the 757 and no disrespect but 2 of my HS band members who became woodwind section leaders in the legion would’ve been just another player at FAMU 🤷🏿♂️

When it comes to the sound of the band, it ain't about playing loud. It all comes down to air support, as well as listening to each other. It's all about striving to be so in tune that your sound is coming not from your own horn, but from someone else's. That's why FAMU is the standard.

This band exemplifying its amazing range. Every instrument heard and has its own unique place. Piccolos, clarinets, alto saxes, tenor saxes, horns, trumpets, euphoniums, trombones, sousaphones and percussion. At the beginning, great usage of the trumpets and saxes holding down the chords, then the clarinets and piccolos come in with the melody, followed by what sounds like tenor saxes, euphoniums and horns subtlety holding down the counter melody; oh and then that smooth addition of the trombones and sousaphones to further mellow out the mood. So much musicality going on in this arrangement. The dynamic interlude exchanges. Hubba Sarge!!! 🐍❤️🐍❤️🐍

As a kid growing up in the '80's who spent a lot of time during the summer at his grandparent's house and whose grandmother was going to watch Y&R everyday, religiously, I knew that song meant sit down and shut up or go outside. As I got older and became more appreciative of the art of music, I realized that is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written (my opinion). Coming across this video and hearing those college kids play so well literally brought a tear to my eye. Absolutely wonderful!

THIS is one of the reasons that I have so much respect for this band program - the musicality and balance within the Marching 100 have always been second to none. And this is coming from a very proud Sonic Boom alum! We need this diversity in sound within our HBCU and certainly our SWAC bands. Bravo, FAMU!!

FAMU's Marching 100 is simply amazing. I'm awe struck every time I see them or listen to them on KZbin. This brought tears to my eyes. I don't think there is anything this band can't do. If I could turn back time, I would have been a Marching 100 band member. 😊🤦🏽♀️

Although I was never into the Young and the restless I've always loved this piece. And being a former woodwind player in my middle and highschool band I would've loved it if we had the opportunity to play Nadia's theme a.k.a Cotton's Dream but we never did. I've always believed that the angles of heaven collaborated with Barry De Vorzon and Perry Botkin Jr to composed this piece because I'd always found it to be heavenly and angelic.
