So why is this show so memorable if it is soooo unrealistic? I think it's because it takes teenage themes that are actually very realistic - sibling rivalry, peer pressure, what we want to do vs. what we should do, etc - and simply presents them in an unrealistically optimistic way. When I was a senior in high school I was part of this exact same Marcia/Charlie/Doug scenario - and unfortunately I was Charlie. I asked a girl to prom, she said yes, and then a week later someone she wanted to go to prom with more asked her. So what happened? She ditched me for the other guy and that was about it. She didn't get hit by a football, I never defended her honor by punching out the other guy, she never seemed to have any regrets about ditching me, and we pretty much never talked again. The reason the Brady Bunch remains popular is because it takes on very familiar teenage themes that we all did in fact go through - and presents them in the way we would like them to turn out rather than the way they actually did.
