Such a beast. Love how he smiles all the time, no matter how hard, complex or fast the pattern is. Hands down, Marco is the king.

Reminds me of Yoga videos for beginners. "As a warm-up we make a gordian knot with our legs while doing a handstand on the left arm. The right hand rests on the left ear. Breath nomally." %-)

I don't think so. Marco is phenomenal but I didn't think he would fit the group so well image wise. In that respect Mangini is perfect. Whose drumming do I prefer more? Marco makes me smile more. :)

He's not in Dream Theater because Mangini beat him out of the gig; otherwise he would be with them.

1. We'll never know exactly what went on behind the scenes. 2. It's clear that DT (i.e. Petrucci) wanted somebody who committed 200% to the band for the rest of eternity and wasn't going around fucking other bands and musicians constantly. It's also pretty clear that, at the end of the day, DT (i.e. Petrucci) wanted the best human drum-robot on the market, but ultimately a human drum-robot who would do as told and not want to have a big influence on the music. 3. Marco is constantly working with tons of different musicians and writing and recording his solo albums. He's undoubtedly one of the top drummers on the planet and has worked and recorded with some of the best musicians out there. 4. He has already stated that DT wasn't really that interesting for him as a job. I believe him. Sure, you might think that anybody would dream (no pun intended) of being in DT; good money, stability, etc. But some of us prefer freedom and fun to stability and better pay. And besides, I'm pretty sure Marco doesn't have to go around begging anyone for gigs ; )
@spercoco6 жыл бұрын
He auditioned for the band hoping to get the gig just like the other drummers that auditioned. It's easy to say that oh he didn't want the gig and he's better off on his own and that he has more creativity, bla, bla, bla. Listen I'm not a huge DT fan and never was. Nor am I even a big Mangini fan; he grew up in the town next to me and we took lessons with the same drum teacher at one point and that's about it; that's as far as I go with knowing anything about him. But to say he is a yes man and a robot is just bs and you know it; t sounds like you are a bit perturbed that your man Marco didn't get the gig. BTW Mangini has just as much input into what DT produces in terms of music as any other drummer would in any band. A lot of the stugg changed once he joined the band and you can hear his influence on the music. Some people will argue that they liked Portnoy's influence better but that's all opinion.
@musicM0VESme6 жыл бұрын
It's true. This man is so much better than DT. He's on different levels.
@RoccoHernandez875 жыл бұрын
Mangini didn’t beat anybody!!! DT need a drummer who plays EXACTLY WHAT THEY WANT, no new ideas, no innovation, no composition, obviously no showin of and well you have the result on Mangini. Marco and Virgil where actually way beyond the band and it can see on the videos! Thomas Lang was beyond too but Marco and Virgil really attend the audition just for fun...

I would say if anything Gavin Harrison's drumming is too technical, I've never thought of Marcos drumming as too technical he is just a genius that doesn't mean he plays too technically.
@JD0x011 жыл бұрын
While you are not wrong, Marco's band mate Guthrie Govan, has the opposite idea. He doesn't like doing repetitive, "boring" exercises. Guthrie believes it's more important to practice by getting the sound in your head, out, on the instrument.
@stephenvastardis24311 жыл бұрын
Ah dangit. I've been practicing this exercise for the past week on my guitar and was wondering why it sounded different. I guess thats what happens when you try to play guitar with your feet.

No, this guy is a fucking master, and in order to become a master, you must practice your ass off. Today, when I struggle with my guitar playing because for years I've been practicing the wrong way, I wish I had some freak like Marko to slap me every time I say "theory is boring" or "that's no music".

Mangini has been using two operable hi-hats (usually a total of 4 sets of hats on the kit) for years. And I mean like 20 years or more. You can hear it on Dream Theater's latest album! No disrespect to Marco of course, but multiple hi-hats isn't unique to him.
