In the April 2014 issue of Rhythm Magazine we give you a front row seat at Thomas Lang's Drumming Boot Camp. In the issue Thomas takes through a series of hardcore drills and exercises to make you a better player.
In this sample lesson Thomas looks a killer foot exercise inspired by George Lawrence Stone, the author of the seminal instructional book Stick Control For The Snare Drummer and a man who was sought out by jazz legends Joe Morello, Gene Krupa and Lionel Hampton.

This guy is not only a fucking incredible drummer, but a great athlete imo, great leg/calf strength and body control, he stays in shape and trains every limb, he pushes himself to extreme limits like a professional athlete does, he also constantly practices rudiments, one of the best ever!

I've worked it out. Thomas' pedals are actually scared of his feet, and THAT is why they appear to do doubles without him actually stomping them. What we perceive as awesome blast beats are actually the rhythmic manifestation of instrumental PTSD. It all makes sense now!

I love thomas, he shows you everything...everyway to succeed. Not once does he ever say it's easy but implys it takes time and practice BUT at the end of that time(maybe 20 years haha)you will be able to do it just like him 😊👍👏❤🔥 there is no easy way to be awesome, it takes time and dedication whether to be an awesome drummer, spouse, skateboarder, the lesson is the same 😊

Nick Newton Just practice, learn about Moeller tech. Experiment, you can do it. He commits time, works out on body, has passion. A slow drummer could get to half speed and be happy. Isolate left foot using doubles in groups of 3. You'll soon developed extra room for foot pedals, etc. Lotta time maybe...yeah! I'm sure, lots of time.

Here's a different way of looking at it, Ringo Star and Charlie Watts couldn't play any of this stuff yet their two of the wealthiest drummers in the world. Thomas Lang is a drumming machine, he's a great drummer and a terrific showman it must take such a dedication to practice the way he does and make drumming a huge part of his life, his whole life really.

This kind of stuff isn't just learned after a few lessons or in a camp. Thomas obviously spent many hours as a youth perfecting these techniques. Playing clean doubles with your feet isn't nearly as easy as playing them with your hands.
