I'm not sure if many people outside of Brazil are aware, but back in the day, Ruas never committed to just one martial art. Instead, he mastered techniques from various fighting styles and proved himself against some of Brazil's most skilled fighters. He faced one of Carlson Gracie's top BJJ practitioners, who was significantly heavier than Marcos. The fight was a draw, but considering the circumstances I can say that it felt like a humiliating loss for the Gracie family and for the entire BJJ establishment, which dominated the 'Vale Tudo' scene at the time. As a result, Ruas struggled to get more opportunities to fight. It wasn’t until he was almost accidentally invited to compete in the UFC that he finally got the chance to show his full range of skills, including capoeira, Brazilian luta livre, kickboxing, boxing, BJJ, and his unique style. I can safely say he was one of the pioneers of MMA in his era and probably the toughest fighter of the early stages of UFC.
