"I don't have to literally make the colors blue, as long as they're going that way on their journey through the color wheel, i can pick a wide variety of cooler colors here" something about color theory never really clicked until I heard it phrased like that- his whole egg study segment felt like actual understanding! where as so many color theory youtube videos simply exposit the same definitions about value and color and all that without actually giving practical advice about how to use it in practice- this was a very comprehensive start to understanding!

This video was SO incredibly informative-- I have it saved so I already plan on returning to it often. But I can't help but feel a bit overwhelmed by all the information )'': I know mastering this stuff takes time and practice, but I just completed a piece for my art account and now I'm looking at it like "oh god, I think the colors are way off considering my light source" LOL! But hey, I'll keep practicing! Thank you so much to Marco Bucci for this!

@mrsplosh999
@mrsplosh999 3 жыл бұрын
It took me ages to learn this haha. I learned it via Sam Nielsons course and just tonnes of sphere tests. A nice analogy for anyone who might not get it is to think of the colours as magnets. The more saturated the light or object, the more it will 'pull' towards (creating the resulting colour). So a bright red won't be affect so much by a grey (warm) light source and it will retain its local colour. Then you just adjust the brightness based on the light source strength. Hope this helps :)

Even though this is probably one of the most useful lighting, color, and skin tone tutorial I've seen on youtube I can not stress enough how helpful it would be to see this concept explained using darker skin tones as well. Mostly because the ochre, blush, and cool tone rule that you mention regarding faces doesn't seem to appear as often or as dramatically on those tones? If anyone has good tutorials or resources to expand on this idea but for dark/black skin please comment below!!
@teagancombest6049
@teagancombest6049 3 жыл бұрын
Ben Lustenhauer (might have misspelled that) has a good video on how the 3 color zones do also apply to darker skin tones but how they generally have more saturated colors and the zones are closer in tone with more gradual transitions to shadow.

I kind of lean towards deep reddish purples and blues for darker skin shadows and more of a dull dark pink orange mixture for highlights (depends on lighting, sometimes a watered down blue)

I agree. African, Caribbean, Indian and Olive skin tone studies are way more needed on the web. The deeper the colours, the more subtle the blends are because the hues are at the darker end of the lighting so more skill is required IMO.
