Your explanation of the song is pretty accurate actually! It is about a character who just 'wants to be accepted', especially by the person she loves most, but unfortunately there is a tragic end to that tale. You should definitely listen to Fleeting Words - Family as well ... it is a simple guitar version with Emi Evans vocals and it is just wonderful and heartbreaking all at once! Fun fact about this song too ... I don't know if you remember the lighthouse lady and her storyline in the game? It is mentioned in version 1.22 that the lighthouse lady used to sing this song when she was alive, which could give this song a whole new interpretation (still just as sad though! Haha ... but that's the beauty of NieR, isn't it?) ^u^

Ah Louise's theme... Her story is heartbreaking, expectedly during route C when you find that the thing she desires the most (even amongst her own kind) is the one thing that she'll never be able have, even if others like her would have been able to. And the way twins treated her too... As a means to an end to fulfil their goals. Her story in a way is similar to Simone from automata, but it's both happier and sadder at the same time.
@fg009letyrds82 жыл бұрын
They're different tragedy though? Louise experienced the feeling of being loved and accepted by the man she loves but knows she'll get rejected if she shows him what she really is, while Simone destroyed herself for a man who doesn't even give a fk about her. Their only similarities is that they desire to change themselves to be with their beloved.

Actually what's more tragic is in Route C if you listen closely Louise actually speak human (english if you play with the english Dub or Jap in the Jap dub) in route C, it's still a bit distorded but you can actually understand her voice, meaning despite what the Twins says, she was very close to actually be able to understand and write human language and was ironically the Shade that came the closest to being able to communicate with the Replicants.

I say it's more a testament to the composers and writers the way you can read a story or emotion of a scene off the song alone, while it's still very impressive a fair few reactors have quite often pinpointed what's going on in a scene without seeing it, particularly when it comes to games like DrakeNieR or Xeno-Series or (so I've heard) Final Fantasy where it almost feels like the story was written after and around the Tracks instead of the other way around (to be clear that's not the case even though it can feel like with how perfectly things line up).

Starting to really enjoy hearing musicians talk about music from video games I enjoy and have either watched or played! Been watching some for Undertale from professional musicians (opera singers and other video game music composers), and something I think is really remarkable is how professional musicians are able to pick up on exactly what the mood of the song is and its context without ever having played the game or seen its use in the game. You've pinpointed the mood of the song very accurately - especially with the "wanting to be heard" bit. That particular bit of the fight...oh gosh, that analysis fits perfectly with the battle.

I would have recommended listening to the Another Edit version which splices Outsider and Family together. Also the first time I heard this outside the boss, this vision of an alternate version of NieR crept into my mind, where Yonah is the Shadowlord, and Fleeting Words would easily fit as her boss theme. That's because in the story, Devola & Popola mused over the thought of using Louise, the boss this theme belongs to, as a countermeasure to the Shadowlord, since she is nearly as powerful or at least on the same level. So I totally feel that this theme is thematic compliment to Shadowlord, and could be used in that sense. Where Shadowlord is a very strong and resolute song that commands emotion through the strength of its composition, Fleeting Words compels action through its sheer emotion, in spite of the composure of its melodic persuading. Though I'm not sure about other listeners, that statement said, Shadowlord comes off as masculine in a way with Fleeting Words feeling more so feminine. Shadowlord forges onward with a conviction in its organs and blaring trumpets, and the performance of its choir almost as if zealously reciting a heroic creed on repeat while out on a crusade. Fleeting Words stays in place tormentedly so, because it is a ballad of emotions swirling in the tornado of its strings and horns, begging for touch and connection, and it only hurts to listen to it on loop because in spite of the choir's compelling arguments and persuasions, it goes on left unanswered forever. I'm conviced that Fleeting Words is the princess to Shadowlord's prince.
