Ah Lamia my dear Lamia, she is so complex and interesting. In game, Lamia is this centaur/mermaid-like comedic villain sidekick. Like any adversary, she is cunning and selfish, but also nervous, emotional and weirdly innocent. She is so bad that she can steal from kids, but not so evil to cause a massacre. spoiler: Turned out Lamia was raised by a group of elite scientists. Contrarily to Lamia, these scientists are selfless and work for the humanity. They are also extremely rationale that they rid of themselves any human desire and emotion. They would even scold little Lamia for crying or any irrational behaviors. Crisis broke out. The scientists chose to sacrifice themselves for the greater good. They plan to isolate themselves in their laboratory under the ocean. Of course, little Lamia wanted to leave and got scared. This time however, the scientists went easy on her. They transformed her to be amphibious and ordered her to return to inform them when the crisis is over. Lamia was released into the ocean. In reality, the scientists never had hope of Lamia coming back. They knew they were gonna die. The order was just an excuse to free Lamia. Lamia had been a mirror. The scientists had been seeing themselves in Lamia. They didn't allow any human emotion to reside in themselves, but they allowed Lamia. She is like a container for their humanity. Letting her go, is to let free of themselves. For the mankind, they left their body in the laboratory, for the self, they released their desires into the ocean. In the end, Lamia returned to the laboratory but empty. Welcome home, says the recording. Lamia realizes all. Hence the music.

It does so much emotional damage when all her memories come back just for her to realizes she has nowhere else to go. The VA really did an awesome job voicing Lamia in the boss fight. We can feel the sadness and desperation in her voice.
@nateklempner5612 жыл бұрын
@@MarcoMeatball In addition to this, the third section of the song (around 5:04) is the boss fight with Lamia against the character you play in this section of the story, Vera. Lamia may be a meek antagonist character, but she's still an Ascendant, which basically meant she's SUPER dangerous for anyone to fight 1 on 1 (this is the first time in the game's storyline where the protagonists do so successfully). And in this fight, that's exactly what Vera does. The stakes are high, with Lamia, in her frazzled emotional state from remembering her past all of a sudden, trying to sink the entire massive Naval facility she grew up in to the bottom of the ocean, and Vera who's trying to stop it from sinking to preserve and recover potentially humanity-saving information and technology from within the facility. Lamia's coming in with fast slashes, long range energy harpoons, and even holo-projections of herself that attack and deal damage, and Vera counters ALL OF IT. The battle ends when Vera finally wounds Lamia with an almost-lethal blow that's not fully evaded and then Lamia gives in to her nature and flees back into the ocean.
@John-vi8oi2 жыл бұрын

I love how you vibe with the song, that's Vanguard's magical. Long story short, Lamia is mermaid-like Ascendant and antagonist of the "Last Spark" story patch, she is the pushover, meek and the one who always run away like a coward when things goes wrong. This song is about her finally snapping back and showing ho menace she is on the battlefield, specially around water. As you mentioned, there's this desesperation and direness, this fight between Vera and Lamia, a clash between two people that deal with their own pain. One wants to take it all away, while the other wants to bury beneath the ocean.

Haven't played PGR, YET. I need to get around to it. As someone who's never played the game, I'm just going to say that a fight between two people trying to deal with their trauma is one of the most emotional and interesting stories you can tell. Especially if the star of the show is the coward, who actually turns out to be a straight up nightmare in a fight. There's something very awe inspiring and intimidating about a character that normally runs away, doing an about face and going for your throat. Like the old saying goes, a cornered beast is the most dangerous.

Heard this prior to global release and I found myself liking it better on official release. It's a more immersive experience. Also, the story also hits different than most. Probably my favorite. Kuro's world-building and story is truly top-notch, still typical in sci-fi but the delivery and phasing is just beautiful. I love the way they presented a moral dilemma here. As always, great video.

What these songs get me is the human element in each and every one of them. They have all these techno stuff that makes me feel the struggle, the build up, the setting, and then you get hit with the Vocals. Jesus Christ! Makes me feel that humanity can overcome everything you throw at it. I've been trying to figure out where I've felt it before and remembered the music of Hans Zimmer's Interstellar! We're surrounded by all these machines, technology and science. But the human element is as much important to the that and this game. You feel what the characters are feeling and thinking at that moment. Trying to struggle and fight with every fiber of their being. Truly a pleasurable experience listening to these masterpieces.

This song is amazing! Easily one of my favorites from the game. And it has been enhanced with knowledge of the story arc of Vera and Lamia. I like to think that the solo soprano is Vera. She is strong like a valkyrie though she has lost most hope for humanity as a whole, Vera has embodied that "Last Spark" (though she may not seem like it) she takes those feelings of despair from people long passed and turns it into the hope and glory of retaking Earth. Lamia is the opposite (I won't say more because getting to know her through this chapter leaves a great impact for a character that doesn't get enough scenetime.) When the choir hits it's blades clashing as well as their inner voices.
@FarabiHasanMusic2 жыл бұрын
YESS this is what I’m waiting for thank you Marco for the delivery! I play PGR in global and the global server is I think a year behind(?) the CN server so when I heard Lamia for the first time I had no idea what’s going on story wise and my exact facial expression was literally like you hahah. What I really like about Lamia is the sound design. We are underwater and when I think about underwater as in present times is a submarine. I love how the higher pitch synth that plays the melody sounded like a sonar radar. Idk much about sonar technology in submarines/ships but I read that active sonars is audible but is actually around 500kHz which literally can make people deaf, so I think Vanguard go for the sonar sound effects from the movies which has a lower pitch and has an echo to it, which exactly sounded like the synth they used for the melody! Creating futuristic cybernetic themed track that takes place hundreds of years ahead is one thing, but being able to create that track with elements that us in present times can relate was simply phenomenal! Marco, thank you once again for doing this reaction! I thoroughly enjoyed it and gained useful knowledge especially when you discussed about the soprano voice, it was very pleasant to watch!
@icefeather1128 Жыл бұрын
alright, i have to admit that i would love to add my own psychoanalysis of vera and lamia in comparison to the music, but everyone really summarized it so perfectly. instead, i wanted to talk about this "humanity" aspect brought up in the video. [SPOILER warning in advance!] i think one massive theme throughout PGR is the idea of humanity, what it's meant to be, how it's represented, and what makes something human. in case nobody is familiar, TLDR, all the playable characters are essentially 'robots' called constructs after humanity discovers a way to transfer consciousness into mechanical human-like "frames". here in the last spark (the chapter name), vera is shown to be a greatly sadistic character, feared by many as "death" (due to the fact that many people think she brings death to those around her - she was a medic before she became a construct). in one instance in the far past, she had taken a spear with a flag/banner on it from someone who was meant to represent humanity and give people hope while wearing a frame specifically designed for executing construct traitors (instead of the usual design of frames made to kill robots infected by the punishing virus that has destroyed earth). of course, this raised a lot of eyebrows due to all the scrutiny she had faced in the past, and infuriated many people who saw her as "Death". she takes this title to heart, and almost makes it her identity. she is cold, closed-off, sharp-tongued, but there's plenty of evidence to suggest she cares about others, wanting to take on pain for others to "give meaning to her existence". in this chapter in the present, she had to work to save something precious to humanity, technology that could help us save it in this Atlantis-esque research center/city that is now sinking. because of this, as represented in the music, she is almost like... a representation of humanity's desperation for this city to not sink, to rescue its hope. she is seen as death, but she is also humanity's last resort. the stakes are absolutely high. she is also elegant in her movements in this old frame which shows beautifully in her animations. lamia, ironically, despite possibly being the most human thing in said research facility before all the researchers inside perished (see Colab Colab's comment about Lamia!), ended up the least human physically. she's almost like a mermaid or a siren. in a way, that desperate voice could also be seen as lamia's call, her desperation, and her internal hell after so many years away from this facility that housed her "parents" and her "home" (albeit horrible, inhumane ones- oh, more irony). so you have these two characters, both human on the inside and mechanical (in more ways than physical) on the outside, but with entirely opposite temperaments. they're amazing foils(?) for each other. extremely confident, competent, take-no-bs, sadistic "hero" vera met with meek, emotional, doormat "villain" lamia. it is absolutely beautiful to me that these messages can be portrayed in music. kudos to kuro and vanguard!! ...ah. i said i wouldn't psychoanalyze. too late i guess!

I always thought that this was the theme of Lustrous (the researcher) Since she killed herself in the facility with tons of supplies and recordings that we (commandant) and Vera listened to, and she mockingly ate away all of Lustrous' supplies which somehow kinda like Lustrous became a memory chip to Vera Even Lamia was intimidated with Vera's appearance, since she did kinda saw the researcher Lustrous in Vera
@TheTroubleshooter2 жыл бұрын
kinda, vera more so retrieves the swords of the fallens, stabs it into her back, and continues to carry on. Her mood teethers from indifferent to uncompromising because of how mistreated and misunderstood the world has been to her for both good and bad even her "late fiance" misunderstood her not as a grim reaper but as a valkyrie. The indifference is similar to numbness, so she excites herself or "feel alive" when it stings or bleeds. Like many of the more realists or pessimists in the story, they often reject happiness so it does not hurt them when its taken away. How ironic isn't it, for their bodies of "steel", their hearts are still the same kind of glass as humans

To add to your point about the soprano voice representing purity, elegance, etc, I think it also is simply because it's in the higher register that gives that feel of "heaven" which often represents purity, elegance, etc vs the hell aspect of things. Not saying hell is represented by the lower registers. Dunno how I missed this one so late in the game, keep the analysis coming brother!! Loving them.

I think your point about how the singing brings humanity to this piece is important, but I think I can expand a little more on it. The way I see it, the very clear singing stands in stark contrast to the otherwise mostly synthetic soundscape that the piece primarily makes use of. In other words, the humanity of the situation where this piece plays is highlighted; amidst the brutality, the ugliness and desperation of the situation, there's a distinct human element at the center of it all that shines through. And, well, that's what Punishing: Gray Raven is all about.

Those glasses coupled with the 770 Pro padding color make you look so cool! I cant believe this handsome man is the same guy in the La Signora reaction video ♥️

Man. The Lamia boss fight in this story event is one of the best in this game. Enjoyed all the parrying sequences and the stage immersion they gave you. Really blew me away. Every time PGR makes a song with that female choir, you know its a banger. It really is like Vanguard's branding now. They always have a certain way or style of making their song and when you listen to it, you'll automatically know its done by them. Less goooo more PGR musics

Since we're on a mobile game kick let's just bite the bullet: I'd like to suggest Not a Hero from Kings Raid. It's an incredibly powerful piece that gets me emotional every time despite never having even played the game.

at this point you HAVE to check Darkest Dungeon themes, basically, darkest dungeon is an RPG medieval horror game where a group of heroes and people who seek redemption explore and dive deep into the darkest dungeon to eliminate all the unimaginable horrors there, the unique thing about this game is actually the psychological side of it you have to be careful of the psychological stresses on the group while they exploring you have to distress them and motivate them to keep pushing and complete the mission if not the hero will gain an affliction, with a chance of becoming virtuous instead. Afflicted heroes will often disobey the player's commands and will hinder the mission by inflicting additional stress damage on themselves and the party, potentially dragging their comrades along in their path to madness. My recommendation. Combat in the Ruins Town in Chaos The Cove Battle Siren.

Ayo more PGR. Always a pleasure to watch you vibe to Vanguard Sound Studio. Would love to see your reactions to the Firn Night and Secret remixes of Narwhal someday. They're much smaller tracks, but I'd love to hear your thoughts, especially in comparison to the original.
