Fun Fact: Punishing: Gray Raven is heavily inspired on NieR:Automata, from the setting, characters (we call them 'Constructs' most of them are robots), music, etc. Same as Honkai, who is inspired on Evangelion series. Recently, the game had a collab with NieR:Automata and characters like 2B, 9S, and A2 felt at home in the game.

PGR is a gacha game with action gameplay. It's interesting how many gacha games go so hard on their musical selection, PGR, Genshin, Arknights, Fate Grand Order, and many, many others. So many of them have insanely good music to them.
@chunkysweirdtoaster3081
@chunkysweirdtoaster3081 2 жыл бұрын
Someone said that becauxe of the amount of gacha games out there, music is one of the best ways to make yourself more distinct from the others. Because of it, you get stuff like this, godly OSTs like with PGR or like with Arknights: songs that range from stuff out of a musical to hip-hop to a battle anthem, most of which is just made to market events and characters and won't even hear in-game.

Whoever suggested this track to you definitely knew what they were doing! Not only is this an awesome track to battle to but the hauntingly beautiful introspective nature of it really fits the story it accompanies and drew people in. Its what got a lot of ppl to really give the game a chance despite a very rocky and controversial launch. Some veterans will tell you that the Alpha update is what saved the game, and Narwhal played no small part in that.

Yeah, PGR OST! This analysis is so spot on I don't even know where to start. PGR songs are for the most part divided in multiple part that play at different moments. The calm part of the song plays during many of the VN-like story sections, the more action packed second part plays when doing fights against mobs, and the last part with a solo singer followed by a choir is used during the boss battle. I am honestly amazed at how well you understood parts of both important characters here, Alpha (red girl) and Rosetta (blue mecha centaur girl). The "has seen things they wish they didn't see" applies very well to Alpha, and how she was betrayed. This also joins the "whisper" observation, as in one of of the story stages Alpha whispers to Lucia, one of the main characters, " I wonder what will be your choice once you know of the truth" which references those things she wishes she didn't see. You also nailed it on the observation of their internal conflict, as it is a pretty important point of Alpha's characters, meanwhile Rosetta is trying to resist the corruption of the Punising Virus, which forces to fight. And to end things, you are indeed right when saying that there is some excitement about what's going to happen, as Alpha is Always searching for a worthy oponnent, and Rosetta more than fits the bill. I'm probably forgetting something as i'm literally writing this at midnight but that's what's on top of my head. Since everyone recommends Hikari (and for a reason) I'll be original and recommend Lamia and Exorcism, 2 of the best OSTs from my point of view.

this track specifically is one that embodies Two characters within PGR's Story, or rather, Their struggle against one another: on one side, we have Alpha, a seemingly coldblooded killer wielding her blade towards whatever threatens her goal, not even deeming most of its targets worth killing, and in this case, the inciter of the Incident at hand, by killing a gigantic, narwhal like machine that protected a Port filled with struggling humans survivors and on the other side, we have Rosetta, the first in the port's Earthbound land of defense, the Forest Guard, an equally ruthless fighter, a construct outfitted with a Centaur-like body, wielding a Spear/Railgun; she was the keeper and Friend of the Narwhal unit, thus, she is in the defending position, not just taking her revenge but protecting those in the port from what comes in Alpha's wake throughout the song you can see that rhythm in the pulses after the introduction starts, almost like a horse's trot, That, is Rosetta charging into battle, as the almost dreadful silence and nondescript wailing before that is nothing more than Alpha slowly, methodically taking the Narwhal out of comission as it tries to defend itself while calling out for help; and the moment it all comes in, the Voice starts to rise alongside the melody itself; as you said, it's not a happy tone, it's the remark of an enraged, grieving fighter confronting the very individual that destroyed that which she loved the fight is used during a Fight, specifically your fight against Alpha during the Extra story this all happens in, it's that Final Confrontation, giving it all for a result that might as well be nothing, it's a climactic moment that feels perfect, the music coming in perfectly to illustrate it all, it's a battle between a seemingly relentless aggressor, and an equally unrelenting Protector note: I might have gotten some details wrong, it's been a while since I've played Frozen Darkness

PGR's music is absolutely biblical, it is nuts how Chinese mobile games just make the best EDM ever created... and it's all mostly Vanguard Sounds too, they just don't stop making bangers for every game. I mean just listen to: Hikari, Last Resort, Dust, Lamia, Revelation, Moon(JP or CN ver), Holy Moonlight are all from PGR and then Solar Sea, Connexion, Rainfall, A Moment of My Nightmare, What Am I Fighting For(those last few aren't really EDM but bangers anyway) are all from Girls Frontline.

I'm 3 days late but I'm so glad you reacted to PGR's soundtracks! They are so underrated and their atmosphere building is incredible, their soundtracks made it very easy for us to empathise with the characters and the pain they have to go through. Not to mention the usage of "Chaos Language" (I'm pretty sure they are made up words, I might be wrong though) really puts us in this post apocalyptic world and felt isolated in a way. There are a lot of other PGR's soundtracks you should check out! I would say Hikari is on par with Narwhal. Instant subbed. Personally i would suggest you to continue casually putting PGR musics under your radar, since we have absolute hidden bangers such as LAMIA, Revelation, HIKARI, Holy Moonlight, Last Resort, and the list goes on. I want to take a crack at some introspection of my own here, as this is also my first time listening to anything from PGR, and I have never played the game. 8:58, that point where the track seems to "tighten up" and fade to nearly nothing, I get the impression that tension is building up, but there seems to be a moment of brevity at the "peak of nothing" where it almost seems the song is ending. Perhaps a moment in game when the conflict seems to be ending, only to turn back around and quickly fade in, and that moment when the choir comes in before the music is a huge turn that gets listeners/players to pay close attention and be invested in the song/conflict. From what you've said so far, I'm getting the impression the involved characters know each other quite closely, and this moment seems to be one last push, one last conflict, before everything finally ends. This is before listening to the rest, so who knows. Feel free to add anything if you think I missed something.

There are some great tracks from PGR! I'm so happy to hear you react to this! If you like fast paced action combat like DMC or Bayonetta you'd love this game. It works so well on mobile and some of the content can be very tough. The music and character designs are unique, and the story is dark, but has some nice writing that can have some more current humour in it. I think the compositions of the music all suit everything in the games so well and are absolute bangers to listen to in the car.

Well, I was thinking of offering you this game, but I thought I'd start with another song: - Sie liebten sich beide Extended Ver. - There is an excerpt of a natural opera here And I just like these two: - Anti-General - 夤夜渡 (Nona Ouroboros) - GhostFinal - Structures (collab with Nier Automata) I have already suggested this before, but I'd rather repeat it BlazBlue is a Japanese fighting game and its extremely cool themes (almost all have an old version and a new one (1 and 2 at the end of the title)): - Gluttony Fang and Nightmare Fiction (concerns one character) - Queen of Rose and White Requiem (same) - Sword of Doom - Awakening the Chaos

For more context to how this track has impacted the game - This song at 8:22 onwards, was the assigned soundtrack in a No-damage boss fight video that caught the attention of eager and prospective players worldwide outside of China. It wouldn't be a stretch to say this soundtrack singlehandedly brought global players into PGR

Gonna admit it. I've been playing Punishing Gray Raven for about a year now and it's a great gacha game that doesn't really fall into the same systems as others. That said... the music is amazing, the story and characters are incredible and the story the game tells with all things combined is awesome. I was going to recommend to look at some of the Aria tunes, and some later tracks, but Narwhal is a GREAT track to start with. Honestly, PGR has some of the best music in the industry.

Never played P:GR but I LOVE this song so much, it's great to see your opinions on it! I particularly love electronic/dance elements in music in general, and it's crazy how I've met people who just disregard it like it's a "less" kind of music, or as if it "cheapens" it, and I can't disagree more. When well-done, it's exactly like what happens here in NARWAHL - it serves as an "accent" for a myriad od subtle emotions in the music, chaos, euphoria, desperation, anxiety, power. It's just incredible, and I love it when musicians woven it into their compositions, making it so effective especially in games/movies/animation soundtracks!

I love PGR music but it took me a long time before I could truly appreciate Narwahl. My first impression with the song isn't the best, it sounds nice but I don't vibe with it but few months later when I listen to the full version on youtube with the intro and everything, I think it finally click and I just can't stop listening to it (and other PGR song too in a playlist) Vanguard Sound is truly a gem

Marco, thanks for taking the suggestion and covering Narwhal or any PGR music if you choose to deepdive in the future. Vanguard Sound has a lot of great tracks and the way they compose music is godly, pretty sure you'll love them. Love the analysis and you hit them spot on. I would like to suggest a song from an upcoming game to analyze: Black Myth Wukong - ‘戒网’

It's very true. PGR has really great music all across the board. The Developers have taken in several talents in the Vanguard studios, and pretty much all of them really deliver with their submissions, usually meshing extremely well with the story the game is trying to say (which is very complex and somewhat emotionally intensive) and also great music in of itself.. or at the very least the latter at all times. They have both the ambience music and battle themes really nailed down. Very glad you were to put into words the feelings that this particular song invokes, and hopefully you would someday check out and react to some of the other OST of this same group.

Yesss I agree with you, in this Music Theme, I can feel more her (Rosetta, looks like centaur figure) pain, suffer, being outcast, and whenever she fight for humanity, She got rejected.... And how much she's struggle against Alpha (White Haired, Red costume) until her last breath. The music just described her story. You may want check out others tho, maybe Hikari or Lamia, it's Dope. 👍

Just finished my PGR session for the night, didn't expect to see you reacting to one of its tracks. Good Lord, man I can still remember years ago when it first came out and heck you just get thrown into its world. The mysteries within can almost ignite something inside of you, the thrill of discovery is at times bitter and sweet but evermore worthwhile as you immerse yourself. Oh, and if you plan on doing more. - "月 Full Version feat. Mira.Z" [CN Version]" - "Shattered Doll" _Please and Thank You. Though there is a JPN Version of this as well so...enjoy making that decision?_

I know I'm late, but thank you for giving Punishing: Gray Raven music a listen! There are moments where I lose myself hearing the soundtrack whether in the menu screen, the slideshow-type cutscenes, even during a gameplay.
