The instrument you asked about with the 'glass bowls' (or glass kebab as a friend called it) is called a glass harmonica. It's essentially working in a similar capacity as the wine glasses (glass harp), the bottom has a little 'pond' of water to wet your fingers and the different sizes of the bowls are done so each one has a difference tone. It's essentially a mechanized version of the glasses. Funny little trivia about the glass harmonica, it used to have big superstitions around it because of both the nature of the melancholic sound it produces and because of how loud it could actually get, a lot of people thought that listening to that instrument could lead to insanity or turn people suicidal. A lot of glass harmonica players also used to get really sick or even die, because the bowls used to be made with lead glass which in turn led to lead poisoning. Some even called it 'the instrument of the devil' back then because of how many superstitions and accidents gathered around this instrument, so it's funny to use it here considering some of the more mysterious and sinister undertones Fontaine seems to have. I adore how much Romantic Era and Baroque music is coming through from the Fontaine OST so far, it's a marriage of my two favorite classical music 'eras'. I'm so looking forward to it. Also, I did get some big Rachmaninoff vibes from the Battle Theme.

Sumeru had more “swirling” feelings in the music to mimic the sandstorms and cyclical nature of the environment. Sumeru was definitely more exotic in tone and energetic fascination. Fontaine is certainly leaning into more of the “Swaying” feeling to mimic the water sweeps and swells. Fontaine is holding fast to the very contained and modern style with proper and familiar tempos but with the perfect underlying somber tone that the water glass sounds evoke. Water itself, especially referring to the ocean and the sea, has a historically metaphorical sadness so the emotions can run very high but will always fall and settle like the storms and waves that crash. This is probably not going to have a very happy ending to this story.

I'm surprised nobody commented on the inspiration for the part that start at 14:27 It clearly is inspired by the Waltz N°2 by Dmitri Shostakovich, which makes me kinda nostalgic in a way. Here in France, that song was used in a famous series of commercials (the first one was made by Lars Von Trier) that started in the 90s and which is still ongoing nowadays, and everybody pretty much know it from there.

The stage magic & automations combination seems to be connected to Jean-Eugene Robert Houdin, the Father of Modern Magic (and who Houdini named himself after), who was also a watchmaker that used automatons in his magic! He also converted part of the Palais Royal into his own magic theatre. Arlecchino's line in the Overture trailer about stage magicians being actors is very likely a reference to Robert Houdin's adage of "stage magicians are actors who play the role of stage magicians". It's a VERY Inside Professional Magician thing to say, which makes me think that either someone in Hoyoverse is a professional magician or they went super deep with their research.

The scale at which this game is being developed wouldn't even let the Devs take a breather, and even if it did, why would they play Genshin in their free time after working on it the whole day. Not only do they develop a beautiful world, they hide hundreds, if not thousands of hidden Easter eggs which they need to keep track of in case they accidentally add spoilers. Plus, the playable characters we get and their story as well as the Archon story quest as well. Between all of this, QoL is lost in this game. Any dev who plays their own game would have implemented QoL a long time ago.

It's probably just me, but I had a completely different reaction. Rather than crying, I got goosebumps and felt a sense of dread, like something terrible is about to happen. I think is also a reflection of what Idiya told us about Fontaine that the waters of Fontaine are filled with sadness and anger. And the fact that the waters will wash it all away leaving nothing but the hydro arcon behind. They portrayed this melancholy and the lore SO WELL with this main theme of Fontaine.

I'm expecting Khaenriah plot to have some crazy stuff happening too. We've already got a few breadcrumbs that it will relate to Wagner's Ring Cycle which will be insane to see play out.

They’re loosely based on Germanic legends, mostly the Nibelungenlied. Both the dramas and the Nibelungenlied seem to have influence on Khaenri’ah’s lore, as they’re where names like Alberich come from. Dainsleif’s namesake is the sword of King Högni, who appears in the dramas as the son of Alberich. The term “twilight sword” also likely comes from one of the dramas, Götterdämmerung, “twilight of the gods”.

The orchestration of the theme of Fontaine has done something that makes me very interested in the lore of the nation. Up until now, voices have had an incredibly rigid defined function: they could show up in music pieces, but mostly as accompainment. They would only take the central melody if the place has a very deep and important lore or are places littered with heavy memories: Dvalin's nest, Enkanomiya at night when the spirits come out, the Eternal Oasis, the pool of Amrita. Voices also show up when it's a boss fight of a character full of resentment over the past: Dvalin, Azhdaha, Signora and Scaramouche. Voices also appear, mostly in solo voices, humming the main theme of the whole game out in the open in Mondstadt, which makes sense because there's a lot of deep untold lore in those hills and the Anemo Archon is linked to the Goddess of Time. So... WHY DOES THIS WHOLE NATION'S MAIN THEME HAVE A BIG CHOIR SINGING SAID MAIN THEME???? WHAT KIND OF WORLD TWISTING LORE ARE WE ABOUT TO WITNESS???????

I love Genshin's music. They are always incredible. But for Fontaine, this is different . I might be crazy and I am sorry to bother you with that (and my poor english), but it feels like home. It is awakening dear memories of my life in southern France, it makes me think of my loved ones, it creates for me vivid images of nostalgic sceneries... By watching your videos I realised that music is a power by itself, but I never expected to cry listening to Fontaine soundtrack. "The region melody" part plays an important role in painting mood for the nation it's been used in. Mond have quite a "carefree" quality in it. Liyue feels very hospitable and comforting. Inazuma - melancholic and interspective. Sumeru - alive and cycloid. For Fontain, im not quite sure yet. Maybe, because there is still not enough information regarding plot and everything. 13:39 This sound delivers me feeling of motion, even dance. But one, where you have no control over it. One, where you being led in.Probably, this is what Fontain "Justice" could be about.

It's true that a lot of Fontaine is based on France, but this week I was visiting historic center of Venice and immediately reminded me of Fontaine and how the city is flooding little by little and in the future is probably going to become an underwater museum with all its beautiful architecture. The arc is called "Masquerade of the Guilty". Also the location of Fontaine in the map makes it feel like it's the Mediterranean Sea.

This is why I love this guy, I really wanted to hear more classical music enjoyers opinions and he was so passionate, now he's giving us all some brief history and language lessons and it's sooo very much appreciated. I originally subbed because I have an older workmate that is heavily into classical music and I mentioned this games soundtrack. Then he told me how on a classical radio station he listens to there would be an hour dedicated to video game music and he loves game music. when you mentioned the beginning of the Fontaine Live Performance was the same melody but with different musical instruments you immediately reminded me of The Bolero. I can still remember when i was like 11-14 me and my mother cooking in the kitchen with classical music on a box and in between the cooking we danced and acted out the different instruments. My older sister would get soo annoyed by us she often left for her room, so we put the volume louder to annoy her just a bit more XD. Thanks for that

It always amazes me every time they come out with a new region how beautiful the music is. One of Genshin’s main selling points is its incredible music which you really can tell how much effort and care was put into each and every song in the game from the shortest and most obscure ost’s to the most well known orchestral masterpieces.

I don't know if it's just the repertoire's I've played in my short orchestral life but the structuring felt like home. Could also be because this is so new and fresh in my mind but the passing around of themes, the phrasing, and the ebbs and flows of the volume felt so classical in the same way as the chasm music did but also different (due to the different regions they're based off of). There're always a lot of classical techniques in genshin music, it just hit me so much harder hearing this vid with the waltz-like emphasis on beat one then upper strings do the second 2 beats like an afterthought. Also I love when they show the orchestra, the london symphony orchestra members are so skilled, there's this whole section played completely detache and maybe my bow control just isn't the best but they're so precise when they do that whole section and it's the best. Thank you for the very cool vid, I especially enjoyed hearing about all the interesting name meanings. Sumeru was a bit like that for me but instead of telling my friends about the interesting names I was making fun of a girl named shoe and a dog named dog XD (well aside from the desert location names, gave me cold sweats from the years of sunday school)

The fact that the music of Fontaine resembles to Aquarium from Camille Saint-säens, a french composser is a nice touch, also the beautiful evocation to the nouvelle chanson, a genre of french music, and although is mostly based on france, you can see names from Greece and Italy, so there you have mandolin and accordion

Love and hate aren't opposite. Hate is love bend out of shape and broken. Genshin itself is new grounds for hoyo, they never done this open world style before. However, they are veterans when it comes to music. You can also spot the devs learning their lessons from Genshin in their newer games, Star Rail and upcoming ZZZ.

I've been obsessed and kept replaying that opera climax at 32:30 even in the trailer. There's just something with the way it just showed Coppelius and Coppelia peacefully dancing -- but then you realize they are two monsters, not humans. All at the same time with that eerily dark background and opera climax. Idk but it just gave me chills. They could've just showed a cool action scene at that part, but they didn't. Instead, we get that contrasting part (and then the action), which for me was a good choice and well done.

I watched the whole stream, it was exciting and all but once it got to the symphony part, I was tearing up with the beauty of it all. I was legitimally just stunned by power of the music and the talent of all of those people. I felt a deep sense of admiration for the transcendental kind of stuff humanity can do. To me, this is one of the things that makes this game great. It provides a glimpse or perhaps a reminder of the potential to do great and good things within us all. It's almost magical to witness, in a sense.

idk shit about music and yet the rendeau in particular communicated its intentions so clearly to me. it feels like a beautiful, elegant, romanticized battle of wills. there is danger and beauty juxtaposed the whole time, and i felt the song was screaming at me "we've been through so much to get here, so be careful, we can't lose now!". it is wonderful to hear. all of this music reminds me of the music in kingdom hearts' beast castle portions. it always stuck in my mind and i love the vibe it gives off, its some of my favorite battle music, so im excited to see that kind of vibe present itself in genshin too!

Some of the phrases remind me of Don't Starve big time. lol I SO love the usage of the glass harmonica. A really rare instrument invented by Benjamin Franklin that is, in essence, a mechanized version of the singing wine glasses; play too lightly and it doesn't make a sound, while applying too much pressure shatters the glass bowls and cuts you - really fascinating instrument. Unfortunately, due to superstitions and how difficult it was to both play and maintain it, it went out of use and has been almost forgotten.

The "Travail" trailer is the teaser for the regions of Teyvat which was released at the start of the game. Travail means work, but a better translation is 'labours'. The implication is that the traveller must complete the labours of each region before he can reunite with his sister/learn the truth of the world.
