Fontaine music was gorgeous in my opinion. The instruments used in fountain music sound plain because people are so familiar with those instruments. However people might forget that those instruments which being used everywhere in modern music were actually the traditional instruments of Europe. It’s not the composer’s fault not having a cultural vibe, it’s just because everybody being so familiar with that vibe.

That may be true for western audience but Genshin has a huge Asian market who might enjoy learning about traditional western instruments since they get less chance to listen to them.
@Lonerzyyy2 ай бұрын
@@findingaether As a Chinese, I would like to say that China is very familiar with Western music theory, and Fontaine's music is also controversial in China, because Chinese people are "tired of hearing" those European instruments. I would say that yupeng Chen is really good, but the hoyomix team is also good, just in a region where the music happens to use traditional Western instruments, so people think, "Oh, these things are so normal." In fact, because we all grew up listening to the classical Western music, the music of Fontaine is not so amazing, after all, we learned Western music listening to Mozart, Beethoven. Who can claim to be more accomplished than them? (Machine translation, if you do not understand the place, please forgive me)

@@findingaether However, there is no doubt that the music of Fontaine Underwater in China's reputation, because he added a lot of non-Western traditional instruments. @user-xu6on9ic9g I feel it's respectful because they try to make the classical instrument the hero instead of as some background sound. Natlan is in contention with Inazuma for my most favourite Genshin track. Inazuma because of its absolute beauty. Like that track is just so beautiful in so many ways. Natlan because of the vocals. It's always amazing when I hear composers from other parts of the world use our language, Swahili, in their composition. Christopher Tin did it with Baba Yetu in CIV 4, I believe, and he did it again with his own track called Waloyo Yamoni (which is in Luo, one of the tribes here in Kenya. Specifically, my own tribe.) So when I first played Natlan, I just paused for a few seconds because I did not expect it. And then it kind of just blew me away even further with how they went above and beyond. As you said, the Fontaine OST was kind of mild. I think that's just because of where it's supposed to be from. We are all really familiar with European and Western Orchestras, so Fontaine just sat at that sweet spot. There were amazing tracks there though. Ballad of many waters remains to be my favourite from it just because it's such a vibe. I think HOYO MIX shines when it incorporates other culture's instruments and music into their own.

You're pretty much the best reaction I have seen so far (and I've seen many these days), always focused on the music instead of talking about unrelated things, and your comments pretty much spot on, I think I have the exact same opinion as you, Fontaine music isn't that good BUT mainly because of the battle music. Sumeru have Swirls of Shamshir which is probably the best battle piece of the game, and now Natlan has Anthem of the Savannah which is up there as well. And considering you'll hear battle music the most while playing Genshin Impact, it may affect your overall opinion of the region. That being said, and outside of battle music, Fontaine has some pretty fantastic pieces (the whole Remuria OST for example) And I also agree with the first piece called Natlan, I got chills hearing that the first time and I still do. Not sure where they'll put that one though, battle music always keeps the beat from start to end, so I think it can't be battle music, perhaps in the main city but I wonder if the choir and voices might get too prominent for a city piece. Perhaps it will have a different version. Not sure.

I think another point of issue with Fontaine, is that it is based primarily in late 18th century France. Other than some mandolins and accordions, so much of the tradition instrumentation ARE that classical European lineup we know so well. These sounds have become so widespread that it is already familiar to every region of the globe. So while it can be beautiful and well done, it is much harder to add that extra spice that says "This is French!".

Though I do understand that the way that Sumeru and Natlan introduced more instruments to their orchestral lineup are more obvious to us in general. It's not as if traditional instruments weren't used for Liyue and Inazuma's soundtracks however, but maybe Asian media is just more prevalent than others I suppose. Exposure is key here, and everyone's experience will be different depending on where in the world we are, which can affect preference as well. Through this, we can really appreciate what HoYomix is doing for music in general beyond just their games and who composes them.
@reveriesend46682 ай бұрын
You know: your impresison about Fontaine, I had that worry since like 1.0. It's because the "western musical instruments" have become a norm in modern music in general, that their uniqueness, the value they bring to a musical composition has became a standard everyone have grown to know and familiar with, on a subconscious level. Liyue, Inazuma, Sumeru all have their unique regional instruments, and the mix of that becomes the taste of that region per se. Mondstadt is a fantasy land, and that's why it's hard. But Mondstadt was the first region and it set the standard of what was to come, where the music could grow. And grow have they did, no? (altho, Shimmering Voyage vol 1 disc 1 is still my favorite ost album in Genshin ever.) But Fontaine is full western. To be precise: it's mostly French, Italian, and Brits, with small Iberian peninsula influence. So they don't have much special, rare instrument they can put into. They opted for the glass harmonica. But glass harmonica is so rare, that you can't really borrow them so easily. That means you can only make like... a few pieces, at most. For the rest, either they have to avoid the glass harmonica (thus losing the unique taste) or... they had to rely on digital voices a lot. So for me Fontaine was always a test, and it seemed like YPC knew it was going to be a test, too (if you have listened to his new album, there's a bunch of musical ideas and melodical "baits" in his tracks that sounded a lot like Fontaine) and that's why they prepped it. But then it turned out YPC had to leave before the actual test, leaving a team that had to scrape by from his ideas and their ideas as they go.
@reveriesend46682 ай бұрын
Natlan? see how much instruments they brought here. plus the whole anthem and languages too.
@reveriesend46682 ай бұрын
Snezhnaya might be a test, but not as big as Fontaine was. Russian orchestra music have really strong basis, and YPC himself is a very Tchai guy as a composer, imho. (He himself said Rachmaninoff, tho). Genshin music has a lot of Tchai in them. As YPC left, that is slowly changing, but... yeah So Snezhnaya music maybe will be the most "Genshin" of the nations.

I think Mondstadt and Liyue Music upped the standard for Music in Video Games. It was different than the norm which was usually just some loops put together. Genshin went out of their way to carefully compose every song and I think that's why I liked the earlier songs for a very long time. However, eventually, it gets old. Inazuma and Sumeru were very fresh with the new instruments and the way the blended genres. In comparison, Fontaine felt like it went back to Mondstadt and Liyue which is why I guess it didn't feel new. Natlan took Sumeru to another level by adding a choir which just made it imo 100 times better.
