Great to have the both of you back. I couldn't help but smile, when I saw the picture that Bob made, the one with the burning typewriter and Marc walking's blurred. Knowing Bob a little, It made me instantly think about Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Cover

Good video. I am more of the drive and hike and keep your eyes open to your surroundings and the light school than I am of the pre-visualization school, though I do usually have shots I hope to get if the light cooperates. And factors like time of year, time of day, and the weather forecast dictate where I go to have to a good chance of getting images that I am happy with. When I am taking photos, I'm trying to remember color details of certain things to help me with processing, including white balance. And I think in terms of what settings will give me the best RAW file to work with rather than what will look the best when it opens on the computer. A blog post the great nature photographer John Shaw wrote a few years ago titled "ETTR" (Expose to the Right) argues that the best RAW files with the most information to work with usually come when you expose as far to the right on the histogram as you can without blowing highlights. That advice has helped me a lot. RAW files that look bleached out without being blown usually yield great post processing images after processing, with more shadow detail, especially with birds and wildlife. I was not a photographer in the days of film, but my understanding is that the rule in those days was the opposite, that slight underexposure was better than slight overexposure.

Hey Don, thanks for your note. Visualization is wide subject which includes what you described about weather and conditions that will yield the photo you're after. How you expose would be determined by capturing the information that's important to you- always been the case since film. Sort of like how you like your steak (or veggies) cooked, gonna be different for each person. cheers!
