I recently replaced the bearings on the motor of a zero fx. They also told me that this is not possible, but it is easily doable, and the bearings were standard bearings that cost no more than 25 euros. I have made a special table for this where I can secure the motor and pull the rotor out of the magnetic field. I have taken pictures of this and it is not that difficult to recreate it. If you want I can send them. The most important thing is to work cleanly and be careful with small iron parts because the rotor is very magnetic.

@@MarcTravels It is possible and there are some people that are offering this service here (not even close to your location though unless you ship it home :P). if the cage of the bearing is damaged (happens pretty fast now or already has happened) you will get some play on the motor axle which means your internal rotor is already rubbing against the outside. this is due to the small air gap for high efficiency of the motor. anyway better to let someone take a look and hopefully repair it instead of destroying it.. but yeah those are my thoughts..

@KetansaCreatesArt12 күн бұрын
@duniek86 Yes true. I can give you an estimate of motor rewinding in India - If you use first quality pure copper winding then a simple ceiling fan motor will cost less than 5 dollars to re wind. And further if it is a huge stator generator motor, the winding will cost around 1200 dollars. The same should be in China too (if he finds the right person's address).

I do understand why they want you to run diagnostic software with a bearing replacement. It's to compensate for any variance in the bearing, that might cause harmonic vibrations due to imperfection in the bearing, when running at higher revs. This can cause an in balance, possible shortening the motor's life. The thing is, possibly is the thing. You can get your bearing replaced for now, skip the diagnostic setup, and deal with it later, without an issue, if you get good bearings installed. The bearing replacement it self is not hard. Any EV Mechanic in China will be able to do it for you. You can get the diag's done later.

@Ifitwerks12 күн бұрын
Can you explain what this variance and imperfection in the new bearing is ?
@RoamMeYo11 күн бұрын
@@Ifitwerks there is little to nothing a bearing could do that. it is mostly associated with the rotor which has more rotational inertia being more heavier and larger diameter-span. btw, the rotor will be balanced during and mostly will not need any more balancing unless there is any physical change in it (like rewinding, in this case not applicable as it is most probably a permanent magnet rotor, however if the surface is grounded due to coming in contact with the stator, then definitely needs to be checked and corrected for balancing).

@MarcTravels dinamo is quite basic system. It spins because of the magnet induce by the electricity. In order to spin smooth, bearings should be used in the both of the end Shaft. The motor will broke down after the bearings failed to hold, thence the core of the Shaft which contains of copper wire touching the body of magnet and short circuit happens. So the only way is change the bearings. If you asked zero, they definitly Will suggest to change the whole unit of motor.

@@MarcTravelsdo you mean they added some kind of DRM the engine parts and once engine is dismantled, the DRM is breached? Or bearings are integrated somehow with motor’s chassis and all parts of the engine must be programmed into ECU? It’s not that I don’t like EVs (electric engine is phenomenal device, simple, powerful and efficient), but approach, where everything is secured in a way preventing from repairing it, makes me sick and deters me from getting any kind of a modern „smart” vehicle.
@kbenham768311 күн бұрын
This trip has been a fun experiment, getting this far is amazing. You have beat the odds for a long time and are now probably the most experienced EV motorcyclist in the world. Like they use to say in the Air Force, "we do the difficult immediately, the impossible may take a little longer." I understand, they make good electric vehicles in China, probably have good EV techs too. 💣 😊 Always fun to prove the experts wrong. Make EVE a Marc, not a Zero.
@idarborlaug12 күн бұрын
Zero should fix this. A dying motor after 5 years and 65000km should be a warranty job. Zero have 5 years warranty here in norway.
@MarcTravels12 күн бұрын
Battery only. They want 4000$ for a new motor unfortunately. No way

Honestly, this street E-bike wasn't built for offroading india, but for the casual short distance road rider. Surprised it lasted this long lol
@idarborlaug12 күн бұрын
@MarcTravels its not that expensive for a complete new motor. But having to change a motor after 65000km is just wrong. Bearings should also be replacable or last the lifetime of the motorcycle. The warranty in norway is 5 years for the entire bike. Not just battery.
@joachimdorr606012 күн бұрын
@@VeryImportantPepe Nope - even with offroading - the motor respectively the bearings has to last longer than 65,000 km.

I was involved in some ev repairs and you can definitely change the bearing without programming. You probably need diagnostic for whole motor change. You could find some shop in china that can do that.
@MarcTravels12 күн бұрын
They told me I can’t
@kozd12 күн бұрын
@MarcTravels The motorcyle company can say that because they can't but 3 rd party can do it. The car manufacturers says same thing but people can repair it. The motor on your motorcycle is probably bosch or some well know brand. The big manufacturers use common parts with all their products so the bearing is easy to find and can be mass produced. Even if you open the motor and can't find the bearing you can put grease in the bearing so it can last longer after that close and it will work without programming. Only changing circuit board or serial number need diagnostic.

Back in the day, it was child's play just to swap motor bearings... Why would anyone make a motor that isn't serviceable is beyond me.. especially when they are pretending to be eco-friendly ..We are actually devolving at this point for the first time in human history...I've been following you since you passed my house in the uk on the test trip as I was curious about electric bikes, I've never been a fan of electric vehicles but thought an electric bike might make sense/work, so I thought I'd say thanks for making my mind up, I've just ordered my replacement motorbike which is an old 2006 gsx 1400 with as few electrics as possible which i can repair forever with a hammer and and adjustable spanner😂😂.. Should be delivered early next week, ..

What a pain! It sounds like the bearing on the output shaft, which should be straightforward to replace, if you take out the motor and have tools to remove the end plate. Even if you can't get Zero parts, any engineering bearing supplier should be able to supply an identical bearing. Good luck!😟
