You have power over your mind, not outside events. However, you must be uncompromising with yourself. What happens to me is that I cannot escape my mistakes. They haunt me indefinitely and deprive me of peace of mind. I am completely incapable of letting go. Losses , mistakes at work, in the family, mistakes that may have caused problems or pain for others, small or large. They haunt me by depriving me of sleep. It's something I can't get around or solve.
