He had an absolutely remarkable combination of speed, quickness, moves and power. Injury and bad advice robbed him of a brilliant NFL career.

Yes. His talents were a blessing and a curse. There was no one he could trust. No one that had his best interest at heart.

I used to go to USFL games, at the meadowlands and watch the New Jersey generals. But Marcus Dupree was the man. I wish you never got hurt, God only knows what he would have done when he got into the NFL.
@TommyRibs Жыл бұрын
The word ‘IF’ is such a huge word, but I am convinced that if he had stayed at OU, went into the NFL, and never hurt that knee, he is a top 10 all time RB in the NFL. He legitimately was as talented and physically gifted as Bo Jackson. Even though he only ended up in the NFL for a cup of coffee, the fact that he is in a good place now, and happy with his life is awesome.
@pricetilghman22174 ай бұрын
That’s not a “if” you give Marcus a 10 - 11 year no serious injury NFL career we are have a totally different conversation about who was the best ever (excluding Jim Brown).

@@pricetilghman2217 the closest comp I have to him is Dickerson, but he had more power. He would have had those numbers for sure.

Definitely should have ! He seems like a really good guy. I will say though at 19 it looked like he was not as explosive as he was just a year or 2 earlier. Must have been injuries.

Thanks for this. This guy was 6' 2" 238 and had that kind of speed? What acceleration and power. He was knocking over linebackers and safeties. Although he was injured, the Rams should have never cut him.

Where are the professional linebackers ? He would've had at best an ok career if he made the NFL.....the pros The guy had no moves whatsoever . The guy was young and had to cut weight , that's a problem . As I said , he'd of been lucky to make the NFL as an ok player .

@ckobo843 жыл бұрын
Being that big presents some unique challenges, it's not necessarily a 100% advantages to be so big as a running back. Look at the all time rushing list and you see little guys galore like Payton, Emmitt, Frank Gore. It took Derrick Henry a few years to figure things out in the NFL. I think DuPree could have figured it out as well and been dominant, but it wouldn't have been easy like he made it look in college.

Still had incredible power, speed and instincts. It seemed he didn't have quiet the break-away speed he showed as a freshman at Oklahoma. He may have put on a little weight, when he needed to be a little thinner to show that lightning break-away speed he had as freshman. Coach Switzer mentioned that, when Dupree put on a little weight before one of their bowls game, his runs that lead to touchdowns at the beginning of the season, he got tackled or pushed out of bounds, instead. Still awesome to behold though and should have been an all-time great pro.
@ckobo843 жыл бұрын
I didn't see any runs in the clip where there looked to be potential for a breakaway? It's not like Herschel or any other back was going for 7 yards a carry in the USFL like a lot of elite backs do in college. It wasn't that easy sledding in that league.

Absolutely. Unfortunately he was a bit on the lazy side and didn't want to put the work in to make himself even better. This isn't high school son, this is Oklahoma! He never should have went to Oklahoma, he should have picked a school with a reputable power program that ran out of an I or a two back offense, e.g. a USC type of a team.

Great video of a great athlete who deserves the nickname "the best that never was" imagine if he would have made this kind of an impact in the NFL & never blown out his knee. Ok, I saw both Herschel and Marcus play in person- saw Herschel’s first TD run over Bill Bates in Knoxville, and Marcus’s 80 yd TD run vs Kansas in Norman. I give the nod to Herschel as the better back- he was a little faster, taller, and had more raw strength. The one area that Marcus was better- he had more fluid hips, and could make that first guy miss on an off-tackle run, and boom he was gone. Anyway, I lived in OKC in 83-84, and Switzer said Marcus just didn’t like to practice, and it led to him gaining weight and getting injured in the bowl game his freshman year. When he left OU right before the Texas game in ‘84 it was really a shock. He would have won the Heisman on the ‘85 OU national championship team with the Boz. Great times and talent at OU!
@jamesh27114 ай бұрын
I don't know where you get that Walker was taller, faster, and stronger than Dupree, it was the other way around. Plus, Dupree had moves, Walker just ran straight ahead
@brianmyers44443 ай бұрын
Marcus was taller, just as fast and strong….he left OU AFTER the Texas game in ‘83 and was not in school in ‘84….and even if he stayed at OU for ‘84, most likely would have left school after that year to go to the draft, not stay in school for’85….

I graduated HS the same year as Dupre, he was the talk of the nation, everybody was after him. That year, the HS graduating class, had a lot of great RB's and future NFL players. In Louisiana alone there were 4, Karl Bernard, Dalton Hilliard, Garry James and Reggie Dupard. Bo Jackson was in that class, but Marcus was the player that got all the attention. If he'd gone somewhere other than Oklahoma he may have had a better college career. I remember looking in the news papers every Sunday his freshman season to see what his stats were, and he was never mentioned. Because Switzer had an unspoken rule that upperclassmen got preference to start. It wasn't until late in the season when Oklahoma was having a bad year that Switer decided to let Marcus play, and when he did, Marcus tore it up. If he'd been allowed to play from jump he'd have set a freshman rushing record and been in the talks for the Heisman. A helluva great player. When he was healthy he was better than Bo. In college anyway. By the time Bo got into the NFL he was a different man than when he came out of HS. Marcus would never have been better than what Bo was in the NFL. He'd of been close, but not quite as good.
