My best Pal of 47 years Andrew..... known him before he played Bass...... we played together in our schools very good Jazz Band,.... he was a decent trumpet player ..... around 1975 he got a Bass at a pawn shop and drove us crazy trying to play it.... EVERYDAY ALL DAY he practiced at our daily after school hangout sessions at his aunt Pat's house (while she was at work of course) while Daryl Ross and myself ate up all the cereal in aunt pats crib Andrew plucked on that damn Bass !!... it drove us crazy !!! so we bought him a set of head phones to cancel the nerve racking Bass tones of his Axe, then as time passed, ( not a lot of time ) we started hearing ambiant sounds of intelligent musical life, we couldn't believe it,he was jamming out to Earth, Wind and Fire, so we unplugged the headphones ....the rest is History ! so all you beginners let me tell you the best way to get good fast, is to practice like your life depends on it, no tv .. no video games... just practice, practice, practice!! and you will get good before you know it....I met Marcus Miller in 1979 at his family house sub Basement in Queens New York a girl named La La Cope took me there, he was rehearsing with his Band, .....we were teenagers man what fun times, so good to see the both of these guys develop into not only great Musicians but good Humble Men as well.

indeed what makes Marcus my all time favorite Marcus has his own distinctive tone and style that cant be emulated eventhough many bassist try...Marcus is a balanced bassist and has an uncanny ability to groove in any situation and makes groove top priority..something Marcus learned from Jaco early in his career was the importance of clarity in each note...Marcus is phenomenal with his phrasing and can get technical when he needs to but Groove is always number one priority

I've been playing Bass guitar since 1968 and it's to my understanding my confession and conviction to play Gospel Music. Remember Gospel Bass players. PLAY GOSPEL MUSIC period. Abraham Laboriel is playing my original bass line with Ron Kenoly's video song "Call him up / Can't stop praising his name" he is not a Gospel Bass player "But" the world thinks it's Abraham Laboriel's bassline but in fact it's little old me. Terry L. Green Gospel Bass player for life. Stay humble and encouraged.

Love Gouche, probably owe half of the shit I play to him but it's so hard to grasp his understanding of being a 'supportive' role because it feels like he's obliged to respond to everything he hears with some fills or w/e. I've never seen Marcus being so goddamn awkward because for so many times he kinda just stayed dormant to let Gouche solo but turns out that he figured out that Gouche just want to chop over him rofl.

Marcus is always thinking between basslines, Don't get it twisted, Gouche is a beast in his own right, but Marcus has his own signature sound that is not like any other bass player, one Miller triplet and its game over, but this ain't a battle, its a jam session, so Gouche can overplay, and still sound like other bass players, I mean he is sitting there with the best I've heard, ijs

well Andrew just plainly blew it. The worst thing he could have done was to not listen, and that's just what he did. Marcus was so trying to have this conversation with him and Gouche was not having it. Great musicians, when they encounter one another always try to create a good conversation. This has always been the rap on Gouche. He doesn't listen well in moments like this. He is musically ant sociable.

I respect both greatly, but Andrew Gouche showed very little respect/discipline towards Marcus here. *General* rule of Thumb (no pun intended) - When 2 Bassists are playing - one takes the lower register & the other takes the higher register. Everytime Marcus went high; Andrew followed & went high, and everytime Marcus went low; Andrew followed & went low....(very irritating). Seemed like Andrew was trying to compete instead of conversing musically.......

I really respect both men. However, Andrew Gouche was a bit too showy! He didnt really let the groove sit and allow for a nice back and forth with Marcus. I also think he is too busy on the bass, too many notes and not enough air and space to let the groove settle in. But that doesn't take away from all that he has accomplished. i give credits where credits are due.

With all due respect, I don't know what point Andrew Gouche was tryna prove but he missed the mark. He was all over the place with mistakes here and there. Miscommunication between them. Kudos to Marcus Miller for showing greatness even tho his colleague failed to properly communicate with him.
@GuitarRiff8883 жыл бұрын
Marcus is a true master who didn't even take the bait of showing all the licks he could have used. Andrew Gouche no doubt has chops but doesn't know placement. Always overplaying and using the same runs... Keeping the Pocket is the role of the bass player which Marcus Miller does to perfection. Might be one of the reasons Gouche didn't last that long with Prince has chops but missing the fundamentals of being simple!!!!!!!!

I hate to say this. Not impressed at all by Andrew’s playing. Maybe not even his playing, but his decisions: timing, listening, and placement. I’m not sure he was being musical enough to be open to the jam. It was almost like he’s stuck in this box of what HE plays and it forces others into it. Marcus was classy about it tho. And Andrew is a beast and has accomplished a TON. So hats off to both of them.

That's why he was fired from Chaka Khan's band from what I've heard. He was her music director around 2007-2009 or 2010. He was let go because of overplaying over Chaka.
