Jazz Night in America

Күн бұрын

Miles Davis famously once said, "I have to change; it's like a curse." And, that’s exactly what he did throughout his entire career.
In 1969, the trumpet icon may have pulled off his greatest reinvention yet: he went “electric.” He turned the jazz world upside down. It was the beginning of what is commonly referred to as the Electric Miles period - groundbreaking, raw, controversial, and now, classic.
“He had been evolving all along,” electric bassist (and Davis collaborator) Marcus Miller says about his idol. “In the same way that America's evolution from the 1930s to the early ‘60s was absolutely an evolution. It was a revolution from the ‘60s to the ‘70s. And Miles's music was the same.”
In 2019, we commemorated the 50th anniversary of Miles going electric. Miller organized a retrospective concert recorded at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Throughout the entire evening, Miller opened a window into Davis’ entire electric period -- beginning with In A Silent Way in 1969, to his most notorious recordings of the late ’80s which brought drum machines, sampling technology and hip-hop into jazz.
Miller’s two sold-out, awe-inspiring concerts in the Rose Theater reinforced the conviction that this outrageous, infectious music can still speak to us today.
“When you create music,” Miller says, “your primary responsibility is to reflect the times that you live in.” -- SARAH GELEDI

@@jasonhearn5818 Marcus and Lebron elevate those around them and are plain winners. Mike is an all-time great but the truth is he NEVER made his teammates better. Mike better be glad there weren't any social media back then or we would have a totally different opinion of Jordan.

One of my regrets was missing that specific concert in light of the inclusion of Vernon Reid. Notwithstanding though, I was fortunate enough to check out Marcus Miller at Metrotech in Brooklyn the August of that year. Marcus has been able to achieve the near impossible of combining the intensities of John Coltrane, Larry Graham, Stanley Clarke and Jimi Hendrix in his delivery. Absolutely on a different level and off the charts.

I'm still amazed at the amount of projects Marcus puts together_an elder statesman who's still a young man at 62! I first heard him on Streamline by Lenny White in 78...& consequently bought every record I could find with Marcus on the bass. Superb concert celebrating our main man, Miles Davis 😊 👍

Miles Davis "curse" was a deep psychodelic trip, quiet tipical for the time he lived - the freaky Hippy Flower Power epoche with T. Leary´s philosophy "the doors of perception". His art was to transform all this intellectual feelings into really good Jazz Fusion music! Thanks to the bass icone Marcus Miller to introduce us perfectly and posthum in the (complicated and brilliant) world and music of Miles Davis...
