I love how somewhere around 1:35 they sort of lock into place, and the groove is extra funky. They fill both roles so well- each is a rock solid foundation for the other, and each has some wonderful things to say melodically. Just incredible!

While in high school - I was an aspiring musician. I saw Marcus play and I immediately retired. At 14 he was the man!!!! I knew after hearing and seeing him play I would never in my wildest dreams be this good. I was surrounded by greatness Marcus Miller, Steve Jordan, Kurtis Blow, Ray Chew and I know I've left a couple of people out - but we were all at M&A the same time! Now my son is as focused as saw Marcus was at an early age! Thanks! I played ball better than all of them! LMAO!
@purpledynasty16 жыл бұрын
Like I said, she's only been playing bass for 5 years. Miller had already gone to both Music & Arts HS and Queens College (for music). She's basically self taught. Both of them were/are prodigies, and to compare them NOW is ridiculous. Lets see what she becomes at his present level of experience - THEN compare. All I know is that she's already better than most. Also, you have to give her more props for doing this TODAY, when 99.9% of her peers listen to junk. Its like Jaco had a Aussie daughter.

I love Tal ... been a fan ... but Marcus just BEASTED and Tal, who is a great player in her own right, was just holding it together at the end. I'm sure she probably learned a lot from him and has gotten more beastly in turn ... but olé boy got AT her in this video. I like this however ... always nice to see two greats chop it up!

i just came upon this footage today 12/2/15 at 7:09am and as usual Marcus Miller's skill outshines every bass player that was there ,including young Tal ,in my opinion Marcus ranks on an even plateau with the king Stanley Clarke,they just have slightly different styles,also included is the great Victor Wooten/Getty Lee/Jack Bruce /Bootsy Collins/Steven Johnson,beyond the named bassists nobody else is doing anything to seperate themselves from the pack,there are some great upcoming ones ive seen at the Canadian world competion shows,and even then,the greatest of those ones at their best moment only brings to mind the king Stanley Clarke and the other great bassist i already named here above...When you can write a single song that has lightning quick appreggios,octave ringing of the open stings-plus the open string bend of those notes,hammers&pull offs,up and down scale fretboarded stacco&percussive tapping,chording,ghostnotes,strokehand string muffing,thumbing&finger pops,flamingo stlye with both hands,throw in effect devices and control them in time,you are the king of bass,you are Stanley Clarke !He is lightning fast at almost 70(!!!), when he was in his 20-40yrs of age he was so fast that no one could truly play all of a song of his in totality,not even the great bassist i named with him! His flutter stroke is so quick and precise it has become recognized as 'The Clarke Sound'! To all you young bassists study him and practice to be like him because if you do that you might just reach the level of the other great bassists named by me! Ps...not to knock Tal,shes a good bassist-and fine!- but the bassist for Prince is far better on bass-and prettier too!😀....oh,almost forgot that sexy little bassist named Esparanza Spalding!!!!😀😀😀
@tylerdurden43688 жыл бұрын
+Ted Bogan ...."To all you young bassists study him and practice to be like him..."....or better still: don´t try to be like another musician...play as much as you can....and find your own style

You can bet your bottom dollar Tal, after a year on the road as Beck's bassist, would make an even more mindblowing jam partner for Marcus now. She was barely 19 - 20 years old here!!

I made the right choice because I did not have the same passion for music that I had for numbers or basketball. Numbers were always my first love. I just happened to play french horn and there weren't too many french horn players around.

That was pretty fuckin' cool! To see two great talents trying not to step on eachother's toes...each of them is equally as good supporting as well as soloing.
@Animosity6792 Жыл бұрын
They literally spent the first half of this stepping all over each others toes - I was trying to work out weather they were supposed to jamming, or jamming together! It settles down, but it starts off as two separate bassists playing over each other.

For those trying to compare their talents - When Marcus was Tal's age he didn't have her present resume (Chick Corea, Jeff Beck, Allman Brothers, etc), nor I'm sure the chops she's already flaunting. When she's almost 50 (like Marcus), lets see how she compares to the way he sounds here. I'm of the opinion that she'll be wiping he floor with what he demonstrates here. She's only been playing bass for 5 years! He's old enough to be her grandfather (49 vs. 22)!

Man I've done a lot of growing up since this video all those years ago. I've played a lot of basses from all over the brand spectrum including but not limited to: Warwick, Musicman, Carlo Robelli, Ibanez, ESP, Gibson, Lakland, Yamaha, Fleabass, Michael Tobias Design and even a Steinberger Headless Bass which is incredibly big in tone. I'll always be a Fender fan and I'll consider it my number 1 brand to play because it's been good to me. But I will say without a doubt that the other options aren't as bad as my close minded former self thought they were all those years ago. Keep in mind I was only 14 when that all went down. I don't appreciate there being a TalkBass thread about me at all but I will let it go because that was a long time ago. I wish nothing but good tidings to all even that asshole who started the thread and I'd like to wish everyone here a Merry Christmas and if you don't celebrate Christmas I hope your Holiday season is as Merry as I hope my Christmas is. Hoping I get one of those Fender Japan early 90's Jaco look alike Fretless Basses.

Since the 70s with innovative bassist like Jaco Pastories, Stanley Clarke and Jeff Berlin the technical prowess of bassist has improved at frightening levels. Matt Garrison, Hadrien Feraud and this young lady from India Molini Dey. Oh and dont forget this kid Hendrik Linder. None play 4 string anymore and they all have nearly mastered a variety of bass techniques. Slapping, chords, 2 handed tapping etc. But I must say Tal has a beautiful tone sort of like Jeff Berlin and Marcus is one of the most copied slappers around. Also these 2 players especially Miller knows how to actually hold an audience attention. Some players tend to play for other musicians but Marcus like Richard Bona and Jaco Pastories can entertain a broad audience and wont be left in a great bassist obscurity bag. Victor Wooten says it best when he likes to put on a show. Marcus can galvanize a very broad audience of diverse backrounds and ages and you dont need to be a musical scholar to hear him play "Papa Was a Rolling Stone". He is not always my cup of tea but he can entertain and also lift his audience gently into complex jazz without boring them.

Tal was like 16 or so here. She an d Marcus have 2 very different styles. This jam works well when Tal is providing the bass line and lets Marcus run with the melody. Liked it. Like.d his patience with her. And here's the difference between Tall and Mohini. Mohini can jam right along with Marcus and yet pull back and let him take the solo, and vice versa.
@jimiubass317 жыл бұрын
Jaco was great there's no denying that as are all the gentlemen that you have named. The beautiful thing about them is that they inspire something in us.Therefore we should take what we can from them and create our own musical voices that we may inspire others.

Well, at 22, she's only 10 years removed from 12 (and only half of those 10 years were devoted to learning to play the bass). Marcus is 27 years older than her (more than double her days on earth).

Ain't nuthin wrong with home-gurl! Musicians usually let out a yell, grunt or other types of emotional vocalization when they feel that thier particular performance on a piece falls short of their expectations (in the 1st instance, she flubs 2 notes riding a D-minor scale). What's important is home-gurl got skillzz!!! M&M !?? Brutha' is straight INSANE on the Fender Jazz!
