Are these Hollywood stars overrated? In this video, I dive into why actors like Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Margot Robbie, Zendaya, and Denzel Washington might not live up to the hype-or do they?

Most of the actors you mention lost the plot for years and haven't made a good movie in good while Margot Robbie is suffering from the same problem as Kristin Wiig to a lesser extent, she's getting typecasted for her looks
@MarcusFlemmings
@MarcusFlemmings 8 күн бұрын
That's true : i.e the actors :) BUT their legend lives on for decades and decades! Robbie, I don't think she's typecast - she actually produces most of the projects she's in - so has a vast choice of roles. She's choosing them all and choosing the most showy role possible!

A slightly different conversation. Daniel Day Lewis and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman could become almost unrecognisable. That takes talent. I think Oldman fits into that category too. Other actors are their brand and stick within a range. Paul Bethany was unrecognisable as the Unabomber. I once had a brief but polite debate about Emma Thompson. I listed 4 things I had seen and cherry picked another couple that I was aware of where she basically played herself. Tone, rhythm, physicality. He listed as many again, mostly early on in here career where she played vastly different roles.

Gary Oldman went through a bit of a shouty period in his acting career, mostly playing villains, which I think sullied his reputation. However, I think he restored it not with winning the oscar but for Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy in 2011. A restrained and subtle role for him, he doesn't start speaking until 18 minutes into the film.

Overrated and over-used - Zendaya. I think Ryan Gosling did a good job being a goofball in the Fall Guy. It's a movie everybody hates, but I enjoyed it. Don't know how much of that is because I can kind of remember the old show it's based on. I was too young to really understand much of it, but that GMC truck from the show has been a life-long influence.

You speaking about Hoffman sometimes going overboard with his method acting reminded me of a story I heard about him during the filming of The Marathon Man. Lawrence Olivier (who you inexplicably didn't mention on your list of best ever actors) asked why he looked so haggard on set, and Hoffman said he had stayed up for two nights straight so he would be in the same state as his character. Olivier asked him, "Why don't you just try acting?"

Colin Farrell has some banger performances, and the latest Penguin just brings it home, i remember him since Daredevil, the man has carisma, had many roles withouth depth, but semilar to Robert Downey jr, his downfall as a drunk/addict was made up with his rise as a person and as an actor....also there is a one season show called North Water with Colin Farrell i highly recommend just from his performance alone...you can see he's taken more roles were he abandons the sexy bad boy persona, like in The Gentleman, and focuses more on the craft

Ok, Marcus: Gary Oldman: Not overrated. But he should have a serious conversation with his agent: Hunter Killer was a real war crime! Tom Hardy: I won't say It's overrated really. It's a good actor, but nobody expects an oscar from him pretty soon. Margot Robbie: those eyes can never be overrated. But she's giving lately the same performance again and again. Tycasting maybe? Zendaya: Overrated. She's good (I loved her in Dune) but not so much. Carey Mulligan impressed me more in Promising Young Woman. Denzel Washington: man, he's really good. Compare him in Equalizer with Liam Neeson in Taken (Liam Neeson I think it's overrated). David Beckham: come back, man, Real Madrid is missing you!!!(but this time you can leave your wife at home...). Keanu Reeves: Overrated. Excellent as human being, but limited as an actor. He simply has been quite clever choosing some roles (and quite commited to then, let it all be said). And now, some questions: Overrated or perfect for the role? Arnold Schwarzenegger is perfect as Conan the barbarian; nobody could do better. Is he overrated, or the perfect Terminator? The inexpressive Ryan Goshling: he was not the ideal Blade Runner? Overrated or typecasted? Adam Sandler or Ben Stiller are trapped in comedic roles, so we can not enjoy their dramatic possibilities. Overrated or too popular? Margot Robbins, Gal Gadot, Pedro Pascal. You see them everywhere becacuse they are quite popular, and they are used to attract audiences. Pure clickbait! Producers will 'burn' them and look for another ones.
@lindildeev5721

I'm 1:26 in, but have to get this down now. In reference to the RDJ role in Tropic Thunder, I think it comes down to 'context' and 'intention'. I think this is true with what people say or how they act as well. Within the 'context' of that movie and him being a ultra "method" actor, him getting his skin darkened and having the accent and being in that role is the whole point of the joke. Does anyone really believe his 'intention' in playing that role is some deep seeded racial thing?! C'mon. And the way they play it so well with the actual black actor is so well done...where he is calling him on the shit almost every time RDJ does something in character. I like to choose my words very specifically when talking with people because words are important, and 'context' and 'intention' are the main factors when delivering my thought. (Another example of 'intention' would be a politician promising something during a campaign...their 'intention' is the get elected/re-elected.)

Gary Oldman is overrated because he's a real actor, a dude playing another dude while most actors are just disguised. And when you're talking about great performances, you can't ignore 90's Johnny Depp and Leo DiCaprio. They played together in What's Eating Gilbert Grape, a movie so stunning you might think it's a documentary. All actors did remarkable jobs and guess what? They got nothing, except an Oscar nomination for Leo. He might be a little bit overrated but some of his performances (in this movie for example) are criminally underrated.

Denzel.. when he's not being Denzel is one of the greats. When he goes all shouty it's just Denzel turned up to 11, but when he's doing understated, the man has just a phenomenal presence.

I absolutely recoiled a little at first when you said Gary Oldman but then I listened, and I thought, and I think you might be right... he gets overshadowed by even better actors quite often, he's in a lot of good roles in good movies but he's not the best in the room even most of the time. I also flinched a little at Tom Hardy but I cant disagree in good faith when Venom exists

Adam Sandler in Uncut Gems and PDL are some of the best performances of the 21st century. Most overrated actor of all time is Brad Pitt. He’s just charming, his acting is terrible. Also Marcus, my question for you (I didn’t do one for the last videos or two): What are the best films of the 21st century? rank these films in order: There Will Be Blood, Citizen Kane, The Godfather, LoTR Return of the King, Children of Men

Can i disagree about Deniro and Pacino. While they undoubtedly did amazing work their wider body of work leaves much to be desired and i think they have to be overrated given the, seeming, carte blanche they get for Godfather/Raging bull. Dont get it twisted they are both brilliant actors but i think at this point they can't be underrated and no one dares call their performances out on some of their other work so....overrated ;) Also i think Brad Pitt is underrated Samuel L Jackson is overrated Idris Elba i think is overrated though i do like him RDJ is overrated though very good

Typing as I watch. Gary Oldman has too many roles that look like they were 'phoned in' for the money. Daniel Day Lewis is staggeringly good. Paul Giamatti is under rated because he isn't handsome but for me is one of the greatest working today. Anthony Hopkins is an all time great and from personal experience a real gent. My mum and dad were extras in Shadowlands and Hopkins invited them to lunch with him and Debra Winger. He got the set photographer to take a photo of them all and soon after a framed photo with a note from Tony arrived at my parents house. Couldn't agree more on Hoffman. Reminds me that Gene Hackman was amazing over roughly the same period. And talking of Rain Man, Tom Cruise has turned in some great performances that get forgotten because he is a superstar. Most over rated actor is Scarlett Johansson. After Ghosworld and Lost in Translation a parade of largely ordinary performances in largely ordinary movies.

De Niro often overacts. Pesci is a more consistently great actor. Watch De Niro in Casino. Lot of excessive hand gestures. Nervous acting against Pesci perhaps?! Or miscast. Watch the trailer to Once Upon a Time, more overacting. Woods is better. But now I’ll oppose myself and admit he also dials in some perfect performances, Heat, Raging bull Taxi Driver and so on. Kinda sucks at comedy, no surprise as he’s humourless on shows, Serious man!

@@MarcusFlemmings There is an excellent full interview at the BFI with Alan Parker on KZbin, worth watching also for his comments on De Niro and Rourke in Angel Heart (which I confess I am yet to see, have you?). Parker and his British crew even made fun of De Niro for overacting. Don't get me wrong, he CAN and has put out seemingly flawless performances - Heat (he is better than Pacino here, IMO), Raging Bull, Godfather 2, Taxi Driver. But honestly I do not think he is the BEST. Harvey Keitel and Joe Pesci are more consistently outstanding, for example. Haver you seen the one movie scene where De Niro and Jack Nicholson share the screen?

I must say however that for his DEVOTION and giving his all to roles, De Niro has my utmost respect. I feel grateful to be able to see his performances, without doubt. His health got dangerously bad due to the weight gain for Raging Bull, and Marty had to get him to cut it short I gather. Sometimes it is horses for courses. Anthony Hopkins and John Hurt are also as good as any actor has ever been. Who else could have been The Elephant Man? Please enjoy this speech but Hurt, who was poor academically speaking but his intelligence on the screen is as good as anyone's. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYKzZoGhfM6onLM
