Back in the 80's there was a British comedy show with puppets of politicians and stars. They had a sketch wherea puppet of Jack Nicholson is talking to a puppet of Robert DeNiro and describing a movie role that he thinks would be right for Bob. Jack says the film starts with the character putting on weight and then losing weight so Bob's puppet suddenly puts on and then loses weight. Jack says the film character only has one arm so the Bob puppet chops off his arm and ends with Jack saying the character commits suicide so the Bob puppet shoots himself dead. The Jack puppet then turns to the camera and says "what a shame, Bob would have been perfect for the role",

Jennifer Jason Leigh not Jessica. For Marathon Man, Dustin Hoffman starved himself and had himself locked in a room overnight to prepare for which Laurence Olivier allegedly made the remark. In the film Plenty with Meryl Streep and Charles Dance, Dance said that as the marriage was supposed to deteriote in the movie Meryl would start ignoring him off set. Meryl also lost a lot of weight for Sophies Choice concetration camp scenes.

Although Christian Bale definitely crossed the line, I can't help but find everything about the situation extremely hilarious. Christian Bale yelling at the cinematographer in his John Connor voice, because Hurlbut distracted Bale from his overly serious performance in a garbage tier sequel, to an imploding franchise.

HAHAHAHH! I found it hilarious at the time but listening to it again and having worked on film sets now - honestly, he crossed the line HUGELY. 6:26 The "legend" is mostly true, but didn't involve running. Hoffman was going through a messy divorce, wasn't sleeping well, and decided to "use that" in an upcoming scene with Olivier. Hoffman to Studio 54 and stayed up all night. He explained to Olivier he'd done it for the scene, which prompted Olivier's reply. According to Hoffman, the reply was sympathetic and good-natured, not a put down. Source: Hoffman in an interview with James Lipton. But, yeah - these days Method acting is a show-off stunt, a way of being a total jerk and calling it dedication. Note: Anthony Hopkins didn't research his Hannibal Lecter character by actually eating people's faces. Amazing, but true! 😸 Have a swell ol' week! 🥃🐧

@@MarcusFlemmings Well, hey! When I hear rumors and "legend has it" stories, I try to find out if anyone actually knows. That's how I gather information, information which has no effect on the rising price of my coffee! Hoffman said he told the story in an interview with Time magazine. They're the ones who mangled the facts to make the story more interesting and, you know: fake. Keep doing what you do. You're a great presenter and your work triggers me - in a good way! 😸

I guess that there's some merit in method acting when it comes to inhabiting the character but some actors just take it to ridiculous extremes and it becomes a form of macho posturing - acting can be viewed as a 'soft' profession (i.e. not a traditionally manly occupation) so these actors want to show how tough they are by pushing themselves to the limit, sometime physically, as a way to prove their masculine credentials - in my opinion, it just shows how insecure they are.

Its kind of hard to tell exactly what is true with the Leto stories though because Jared himself jumped.on the bandwagon for a laugh 😅. Great video. In school I played Hamlet for a Drama assignment and I kept to myself well sort of doing lite method acting. Another excellent video. I always think about Tron when I think about movies where actors had to use their imagination. I mean, the Star Wars prequels, The Matrix, and Men in Black had to use their imaginations while filming. That seems crazy to me. Did they envison different things before seeing the final product? I mean, I know Keanu was extremely happy with how cool the first one made him look.

@MarcusFlemmings I know. I'm not a fan of the method, and I don't think many of my favorite films have it in it. The whole idea is ridiculous, and it's a crying shame you didn't bring up Jim Carrey in Man on the Moon. Come to think of it, it's why I just can't enjoy Tom Hardy. It always feels like he's trying too hard, and I'm just so tired of seeing it. Same thing with Charlize Theron.

Hitchcock never liked the method. I like the video. They sure cross the line time to time but I blame it on all oscars. Acedamy really awards the pain. No wonder the actors go too far to win it. There's really understable things like learning how blind people live to play a blind man or how police handle guns playing a police. BUlk up some to play a bulky guy or loose some weight to play someone thin. PS: Also remove John Conner from Terminator Salvation and you get a decent movie.

I'd just like to mention that Bale has really only had that one infamous instance of method acting going wrong, and that was ten or more years ago. Jared Leto still consistently has news about his method acting... and you could argue that his performances aren't even that good? Day-Lewis goes similarly all-in but he's always given a good performance and has had next to no complaints.

I think the best method acting i ever seen was the "comedian" Hanna Gadsby who turned her stand up into a ted talk about being raped, when her second special was coming i heard she got raped a few times in preparation. Btw when i see Philip Seymour Hoffman is in the movie i instantly know it will be good, i watched Drunk Punch Love yesterday and he was top tier for such a small part.

I just saw Punch Drunk Love a week or two ago and he was surprisingly memorable for really only doing borderline awful things in the film. He and Sandler were great together. Also, what could I say about Adam Sandler in the film that hasn't been said already? It's a shame the man doesn't take acting seriously. Always people with a lot of raw talent like Brando and Sandler who give some iconic performances and then sink in crap.

When you're playing someone from another time or someone in a profession that requires technical ability then getting into that kind of life requires a certain amount of living it to make it look like you're comfortable in that role. Sending anal beads and condoms isn't something the Joker would even do in the first place. Selling all your stuff and breaking up with your girlfriend is far from required to play a role. At that point you're no longer acting. You're just living. It's not much different from just hiring someone who lives on the street. You're no longer an actor. More like a recreationist. Like those guys who do civil war reenactments. If that's all that acting is why not hire them? The problem is if you have to do this to play the role what then happens when it's something you can't just turn yourself into? Like, let's say, a living vampire. Or the clown prince of crime. There's a reason Leto gives pretty ordinary performances in any movie where he can't just transform himself and there isn't a real world equivalent for him to latch onto. He's not a particularly good actor. There's also a difference between staying in character and telling people you are that character. One is acting. One is a delusion. I get Bale keeping an accent throughout a production. When you find it it's not always easy to keep switching back and forth. But he didn't walk around pretending to be the character.

LOVE this comment! Very true! I guess those people would say "yes, I know...I know I'm not acting. I am being." which is fine, as long as no one else is being hurt,....etc
