Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I am sorry and sad your birds caught this horrible disease. I am dealing with the same thing right now. I appreciate that you shared your knowledge with us. 😢

Yes it is a horrible disease. But do not eliminate your entire flock. Some of the birds will not get it even though it's very contagious. I had to put down a speckled Sussex 2 days ago because she had it is well and it only partially paralyzed half of her body. She had a drooping wing and a closed eye on the same side that she was limping on and she couldn't open her toes properly. If you add any birds to your flock make sure you get vaccinated ones from now on. That's the only way you can deal with it

Bought 5 chickens. dwarf wyandots and cochins from a seller that advertised that he vaccinates against mareks. Age ist around 3 months. After 20 days the first dwarf wyandotte couldn get on the bar. I noticed her struggling when walking... I read up and it was clear that it was mareks. 120 bucks for vet costs. We got 60 back from the seller and another chicken. That was yesterday. A couple of days ago I had a hunch that another one of his chickens started to struggle walking as well... it was of balance and tripped. Now it gets worse slightly. The first one was kinda over night. This one is progressing slowly and I am just fed up at this point. I like this bird. Great character like the first one. Calm, non aggressive pretty tame from the get go and a great help for introducing the new chicken cause it was a calm buffer zone between the new chicken and the other more aggressive ones. Now I have to euthanize it as well. I know it doesnt suffer yet and enjoys its day, feeding, drinking, strolling around. So Ill let it roam till it cant continue and then Ill end it. Im just pissed at the seller that is too stupid to vaccinate its chickens. If you dont fuck up the vaxx then shit like that wont happen. They probably vaxxed them, but put them to adult chickens right away which is beyond stupid. Not sure what to do. I dont wanna kill every single bird. But honestly that seller should be reprimanded!

You run the risk of letting any of these birds in your flock. The minute I see one showing any sign of lameness I euthanize them. And it's long standing in the environment it's damn near impossible to get rid of it. And having them vaxxed doesn't mean they're not going to come down with it because there's different strains. Once it's in a flock it's really hard to eliminate. And like I said it stays the environment. So you're more or less have to disinfect everything is best as you can just with household bleach spray everything. If you let them roam the yard it's a little bit of a different story. Remember it's the dander from their skin and their feathers and and chickens can be pretty dusty. I still have most of my original chickens from 6 years ago. It's always a specific age group that I get hit with. These are my own Birds my own hatchlings and chicks. I don't bring any outside Birds into my flock. At this point this disease is in most flocks even small ones. Don't be so hard on the people that sold them to you. They may not even be aware and that's the truth. I really wouldn't tolerate any of them running around limping since you've had to deal with this because the longer you let that bird run around the odds are that it's just going to infect the other ones.

I got a rooster who’s been acting very strange for 3 days. He’s been pooping a lot of green diarrhea, he can’t jump anymore, hasn’t flapped his wing, keeps looking up and shaking his head, maybe hallucinating?, easy to pick up and poked him with a stick but hasn’t run away at all, stumbling, sometimes freaks out randomly, drowsy, sleeping a lot, and goes around in circles. I got no clue if he has marek/lymphoid leukios. But he is eating pretty good and drinking. I was hoping for a second view/opinion on this maybe someone went through this or had something a bit more similar.

I also forgot to mention some of his quils have white dots on them. I got no clue if they are mite eggs. But we’ve already treated him for mites and worms 3 months back.

I always try isolating and start with a flush, with black strap molasses, nutria drench or rooster booster and Vitamin E and B if they don’t come back after a few days then assume it is something worse, I’ve had several problems with hatchery chicks with vitamin deficiency

Do you know anything about the ocular version of mereks disease? It’s called ocular lymphomatosis, I know that it makes the bird go blind and there’s a 25% mortality rate but I can’t seem to find much els about it. I’m just worried about my girl as she has it but I can’t find a lot of information. Thank you so much for the video it was very informative
@crzrck

I know what it looks like and I know the bird is blind after it's done. I wouldn't keep a bird with that disease around that it'll affect the other ones. I'm a firm believer in euthanizing animals that have this disease. I'm sorry. I have not had any more incidents since I made this video.

there are several strains of this disease.Not all Vaccines contain all the strains.I dispatch any chicken that shows signs of lamness outside of something observable like bumble foot or an injury. I hate doing it but refuse to risk the entire flock.. This year I had to remove a Barred rock who was almost one yr old because she went lame..That was the only one.So far this year no one else has exibited signs of Mareks. They key is to remove any bird that shows signs as soon as possible especially before they molt...

Hi! I was looking for information on Marek’s and I found your video. I am taking care of four hens because of the holiday of the owners, and one of them has problems with her legs. It has been going on for a few weeks now. I took a video today and I wonder if you could have a look to see what you think?
@crzrck
@crzrck 2 жыл бұрын
I typically do not wait and see when any of my chickens start to have problems walking. I typically will check to see if they have an issue with their feet like bumblefoot. But I don't bother with anything else I euthanize them right away. I don't take any chances. If it hasn't improved in the bird is just going to stay that way. I would not risk it infecting the others. It is possible that it's a nutrition issue specifically a B12 deficiency. But if they're eating properly that shouldn't be an issue. If you want to send me the link to the video that you got send away

My hen pass away yestarday, she was like 3 years old, i think from this, vet did not preform a blood test, started with her geting bold i tough it was molting,, then water belly that i drained, then she was layng internally she was sooo skiny jut skin and bones, I dont know how i dint see it, It was my favorite so i keep her in the house and she was with us for 3 more weeks, last week paralize legs neck and wings
@crzrck
@crzrck 3 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you have multiple issues going. Once they get the water bill issue you run the risk of all kinds of infections and stuff. I'm sorry you lost your favorite then. I have my favorites too. By the time you notice birds being sick it's pretty much too late doesn't matter if it's a chicken or turkey or parakeet

@crzrck
@crzrck 2 жыл бұрын
You can try that if you think it'll work period but all that means is the birds are just carriers. It doesn't mean they are cured. I have not lost my entire flock from it. I just eliminate any bird that shows sign of lameness. I had a barred rock that wasn't quite a year old just a few weeks ago that was not able to walk and I put her down I was not happy about it but I wasn't going to risk it. Typically I will start to you lose young of the Year birds around this time not all the time and not all of them. As soon as I see somebody limping and there's no physical cause I remove the bird right away. I still have my original birds that are 4 years old with the exception of the ones that got killed by predators. So it's not a death sentence

Isolated from all the other birds and when I mean isolate do not put them anywhere where they can have contact with them not even in the c o o p, run or the yard. Put the chicken either in the house or the garage were none of the others will be exposed to it. Just feed it water it monitor monitor it for awhile. Give it some vitamins. Give it about 2 weeks and if it doesn't improve where it's normal again I would euthanize. It's not worth the risk of your other birds. It is possible there might be a vitamin deficiency. This Way You Give It 2 weeks through correct itself
