Maremmas don't "round up". They guard. I had one, a rescue. The best dog I've ever had.

I live in a city/town and my dog does very well. Like any dog, she of course needs exercise and a walk/run. She's great with our family and I haven't had any bad behavior from her from not keeping her constantly busy.

The number one difference between Golden Retrievers and Maremmas (and similar LGD breeds) is never mentioned here: Goldens, like most gun dogs, have been bred for countless generations to look to a human for guidance and direction. Maremmas, and other LGD breeds, have been bred for thousands of years to work indepenently, always scanning the area for possible danger, patrolling the territory around the herds of goats and/or flocks of sheep, and protecting them whether or not the herdsmen were there. LGDs that respect the leadership of their owners or caretakers will accept guidance and correction on how they apply those wonderful guardian instincts they inherit, but they wil always be somewhat independent, and have their own ideas about how to do their work. If someone does not know how to gain the respect of their LGD,, and maintain the dog's respect for their leadership, they will probably *not be happy with these dogs as pets.* And may or may not be happy with them as working dogs. It is not about being harsh with the dog, but about insisting on respectful behavior from the dog. Most people would rather act like a pup's littermate, then wonder why the dog does not listen to them when it grows up.

My maremma Yuki is awesome! We live in the city and the worst thing that ever happened its him running around the neighborhood but he always comes home. He is smart and sweet. But yes he does eat shoes and socks and stuffed animals lol.

They can be great in a family, in the right family. They’re very social dogs you just have to understand them otherwise you’ll ruin them.

@bluegama500 Many pet shops have sold Maremmas as a white golden retriever. Some unethical breeders actually breed this as a designer cross - Golden Mareiver. They also often have a faint hue (pink, fawn, yellow) to their coat as a young dog and not necessarily snowy white. I have owned 2 - both rescued for that same reason and have helped with rescue. Some pet shops don't even know what kind of dog they are selling because they are just retail staff.

All kinds of dogs get ditched.The person who ditched the maremma most likely would have ditched the golden. They don't eat that much for a dog that size. If you need a real guard dog for human intruders, don't believe the maremma breeder who says they are a good guard dog. They are not.

I've had maremmas all my life. They're excellent guard dogs, but require a strong commander.

ours is....had our sons friend drop him off one night and he came back because he had left his wallet in the car...he later said he thought he was gonna die on our front steps and no one knew he was there LOL he threw the wallet at the door and ran away. Yet when he was at the door with my son, he didnt even know we had a dog because it didnt make a sound....until he attempted to open the door and put the wallet inside. I would say that is a good guard dog against humans.

A lot of dog breeds get dumped, actually any type of pet can get dumped. The shelters have LSG dogs who were on farms, but were overly playful with the livestock. I wish breeders would have well screened buyers before they breed and quit lying to potential buyers or find something else to do to make money.
@Jefferdaughter6 жыл бұрын
No matter how good the breeding, and the early rearing, LGDs need some supervision and guidance to develop their full potential as livestock protection dogs. Too many people give up them too soon, or expect them to never make a mistake, or don't know how to prevent or correct issues like wandering, or playing with the livestock. Or, they think once they have made a mistake, they will always be 'a problem dog' - which is a shame, because that is just not true. It takes a little time, and mostly know-how. They don't seem to need 'constant stimulation', but they do thrive in the outdoors, with the company of other animals, and the job of protecting the 'territory' and the livestock they are bonded to.
