Maremmas are such goofy lazy fluffballs by day & strong noisy protectors by night. Or at least that's the impression I got by watching Toby on Gold Shaw Farm channel on KZbin. His best friend is now the barn cat Pablo Escabarn Cat. They even share food & Toby ensures Pablo gets as much as he wants by not letting the geese close until done. Toby loves to eat fresh eggs but he never cracks any himself. But when he finds a random one laid outside at night. He brings it to the area in front of the coop. Then leaves it there whole. The next day his human will pick them up & because they can't be sold. He cracks them open into Toby's food bowl. Toby learned this all on his own too. In fact it was awhile before they figured out it was Toby collecting them. If you really want to see a maremma at night working. There's a video all about Toby & shows him working during the night. He goes from fluffy adorable cuteness to I'm not messing with that.

It's s s wonderful story! I only want to point out that maremmas were not originally bred in Northern Italy, but in Central Italy, in an area in the South of Tuscany ( where I am from ) called Maremma, from which they got their name.

@Aimee Bane, I didn't know anything about Maremmas before getting Aspen, now their one of my favorite breeds. The goldendoodle is the goofy part of her personality I think, lol! Do you have issues with your maremma barking? Haha

They're not from northern Italy, but Abruzzo region, Abruzzese is in their full name. Central region of Italy.
@Timbo66698 ай бұрын
Technically, Maremma is north of Abruzzi but…..you’re right. They even used to be two distinct breeds - the Maremma and the Abruzzi. It wasn’t until early last century that they became one breed.

In the central part of Italy; Appennini mountains parts of: Low Tuscany, Abruzzo, Lazio to protect " ancient sheeps transumanza" from wolves attacks. Intead of english and welsh use to eat lambs and good wool; the qualilty of italian sheeps is'nt good for eating lambs and wool production. The main use was and is today the production of pecorino cheese that is of very good quality.
@asganaway5 жыл бұрын
What? Are you serious? A huge part of tradishional dish from Rome are based on lamb meat, that's because in the 16th century there was a taxt applied by the Vatican state that taxes every sheep lamb included and the "transumanza" arrive in Rome/Lazio region in spring so the Sheppard was use to sold to butcher at a good price the lamb before the taxman shows up, that ignite a cooking tradition for that kind of meet that is preserved till nowdays

So do the dogs live on the island 24/7? I imagine they'd have to, for this to work. Great idea, though unless the dog has something to do with actually reducing the fox population (so that eventually there are no foxes to guard against), it seems what this man is proposing is establishing a completely new set of social parameters for these penguins. It'd be interesting to come back in thirty to fifty years and see what's what on this island. Will the dog sentry still be there, third generation of a line of penguin guards? Will the penguins have become so acclimatized to the presence of their guardian that they start to include the canine in their social structure? Will they inevitably become inseparable? Interesting to contemplate the possibilities.
@ZombieChimpanzee6 жыл бұрын
if you had a wide enough gene pool of guardian dogs, and give them enough time, yeah I could see the dogs and penguins become as inseparable as the dogs and their normal domestic flock animals. I think they should also look into ways to reduce invasive fox populations simultaneously, but keep the dogs for protection against the foxes and future threats.
@Citrine_Cottage_Sys4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure but it seems like they wouldn't have to be on the island all of the time. The penguins go out to hunt during the day and are only really on the island at night. Then again this type of dog might not want to ever leave the island. The island becomes their territory and they want to stay and protect it.
@Nirrrina4 жыл бұрын
Being left with their protectees 24/7 is what they were bred for. They're happy being there. But they also enjoy some human attention too. I'd love to see what happens in the decades to come.

Foxes are not native. Europeans brought them so they could fox hunt. I’ll stay off my soap box. Good for the guardian dog idea...brilliant. Do you think this breed would be a good assistance dog?
@johnseabrook10295 жыл бұрын
Probably not. They’re very vigilant with their role as guardians. But they don’t respond to commands like say a Kelpie or a Labrador will. Very independent breed.
@jerseypooh4664 Жыл бұрын
Pity that they don’t use guardian dogs worldwide to protect all endangered animals from predators etc. so many animal shelters full of unwanted dogs etc, imagine the impact this project could get if it were implemented across the world.
