Wow, I never knew she began as a mezzo.

Yes it is an amazing thought when you hear Margaret Price sing the high Es in Mozart's Vorrei spiegiarvi oh Dio. There are quite a few large voiced or full toned sopranos who began and even won contests as Mezzos. Dame Joan Sutherland was initially trained as a mezzo by her mother . Dame Gwyneth Jones initially trained as a mezzo contralto and her first important operatic role after college was Orfeo ( Gluck.) In some cases this just reflects the teacher taking their time and letting the voice develop gradually.
