My mum was from Margate and every summer holiday was spent their as a child. Travelling by train from Cheshire down to Margate for 2 weeks to stay with my Nan and Grandad or Auntie and Uncle. Seeing this video has brought all those memories back. The Smells of the sea and seafood. The last time I was their was 1974 when my nan and grandad both died 2 weeks apart. I was 15. I am 63 shortly. I want to go back their, so maybe this year is the year. ❤️

The coach with everyone on passed me on the zebra crossing near the clock tower. I shouted out to my friend who was with me “Look!! That’s Uncle Albert!”. I remember the ha’penny pier too. Hi, first time in Margate was 1960 when we visited my dad’s friend’s wife’s family in Westerham Kent, the estate was going on a Del Boy coach trip to Margate and we were invited. When our 3 lads were young we visited the south coast a few times including Cliftonville near Margate twice in 1985 / 86. We would walk the mile or so into Margate which I must admit looked a bit worse for wear then, I remember a Grotto lined with sea shells we visited on the way. In July 1986 we were there when Prince Andrew got wed, there should have been a street party but the weather was awful so the party was in a hotel down the street. We also went on a day trip to France on Townsend Thoreson ferries, Spirit of Free Enterprise out and Pride of Free Enterprise back. Someone noticed that our 2 youngest were twins and we a tour of the bridge, The Herold of Free Enterprise capsized later that year and our middle son has screaming nightmares which only ended when the Herold was re-floated and taken away. I see from your walk that Margate has had a bit of a facelift and now looks much nicer than I remember.

I have many fond memories over the years visiting Margate with my family and later on when I could drive, my friends. I also considered moving there BUT I’ve never been there during winter, and can imagine what the area is like during a storm. Also, whilst it’s lovely to watch the Margate sea views from your accommodation, it’s not so nice when there’s a storm, during the bleakest time of year, usually December and January. Also, the old town’s architecture is lovely in Cliftonville but when I was there Margate has a sewage problem which smells like rotting eggs at times, with plenty of seaweed loitering the sands. There’s also a risk of tidal flooding and sewage flooding, and antisocial behaviour which must be rife late at night, and more so during wintertime when it looks bleak outside. So that will explain why some of the properties are affordable whilst others are not. Margate has a lot of potential but a lot of the hipsters don’t tell you how it really is, living there all year round. Due to everything I’ve said about properties in Margate, in particular, Cliftonville, I’m sure a lot of properties are uninsurable which is why a lot of sellers have difficulties selling large properties overlooking the seafront.

I know Margate very well since 1984 when my family used to send me to England for English Language. I used to stay at Birchington. From your video things have changed now in Margate. I can see the new buildings in the main road. Also, at 17:00 the place is new but really beautiful. But, I wish you filmed a place where I used to go and eat delicious beef burger. I'm not if it is available or not. It was near Theme Park, and I remember there were Joke shop and sea shells shop near by. Also another shopping street, I forgot the name but I remember there was MacDonald's near by. My last visit to Margate was in 1999, hopefully to visit it again soon. By the way, is Theme Park still available?
@jamingaming92512 жыл бұрын
It's changed again, they are filming a movie here at the moment. They've rebuilt the outside of the dreamland cinema and put another cinema in that empty lot between the arcades. They've also put up new lights along the beach side of the road, stretching between the lampposts. Starting by the shelter all the way round to the harbour and on up the hill.

@glenntheoldft42103 жыл бұрын
Sadly, Margate is now a pale shadow of what it used to be. I was almost raised on large helpings of trips to Margate. My very first visit was somewhere around 1955 (ish) (I am just a couple of weeks away from my 68th now). Back then we would sit very close to the old sun-pier (or sun-deck as it was also known) which no longer exists. After spending time on the beach, we would visit a restaraunt called "Berrys" (which no longer exists) and enjoy some of thier famous home-made steak and kidney pudding. Then a short walk to dreamland. The magic started as we walked down the slope and through the short tunnel - where we heard the screams of riders and sound of the wooden coaster passing almost overhead. I remember the "rotating house" ride that we always enjoyed, and a ride on the miniature railway, then the "Tubs" that gently rotated on their watery journey through decorated caverns and many more thrills. All that was destroyed the moment the BemBom brothers bought Dreamland in the early 80's. From that point on, Margate started to go downhill. As I was growing up as a child, we would drive along the Thanet way from our home in Sittingbourne. About the time we passed Nicholas-at-Wade we would spy the Arlington House in the distance and the excitement buit up. Sometimes in the very early years we went by steam train. I also remember there used to be a pier up near the clock tower end. It was destroyed by a storm some time in the 70's, and I remember the militarry had considerable difficulty blowing up the remains - I think they ultimately failed! OK, that was a little trip down memory lane for me. Was a little sad watching the video tho'. It's just not the same anyomre. The last time I visited was maybe 15 years ago. I took my daughter and 2 of her daughters down there. We only sat on the beach for about 15 minutes before finding lots of broken glas just beneath the surface. I have never gone back there since.

You like Margate Matthew?
@lifelongmanufanpaulwright58389 ай бұрын
I live in Margate and looking at positive comments is a blessing it gets so much bad press in the summer months a visitors leave and drop rubbish all over it really is a seaside gem also in the winter it's a lot warmer than most places in the UK not by much but I'm a northerner who moved here 16 yes ago to live by the sea absolutely no regrets expect the police who li,e to pull all UK seaside towns down.
