Max Reger composed his 60 Schlichte Weisen (Simple Melodies), Op. 76 (1904-1912), largely in response to the accusation that his music was intentionally and needlessly complex. Most of these songs failed to impress and were soon forgotten, but one of them -- the Maria Wiegenlied, Op. 76/52 -- remains Reger's biggest commercial hit: more copies and arrangements of it were sold during the twentieth century than all of his other pieces combined.
The Maria Wiegenlied (Maria being Mary and a Wiegenlied being a lullaby) is a setting of a short text by Martin Boelitz. Reger's F major music sways gently in 6/8 time as Mary rocks Jesus' cradle. The birds sing; treetops sway in the warm breeze; the infant partakes of "holy slumber" -- all set to a simple melody that moves only from piano down to triple piano (p to ppp). But this is still Reger, and simple for Reger might not mean simple for someone else. There are harmonic twists as the song moves along, and when the rocking opening melody returns after a short digression, Reger brilliantly casts it in imitation between piano and voice -- sometimes on the beat, and sometimes at the half-bar in stretto. Hans sang it as a lullaby, his high notes wouldn't have split the bay's eardrums. Not the most powerful but certainly one of the greatest trebles

The unknown 2nd performer has a fantastic voice, power and soft feeling at the same time - in fact better than the more renowned and famous Tölzer Hans Buchhierl and Wiener Peter Jelosits. But they are all wonderful.

Don't agree. Hans may not have had the most powerful voice, but he had for sure a somewhat expressive and soulful one. Better you couldn't have sung a lullaby.

The difference in recording technic make comparison difficult. I prefer Hans but there is no denying the quality of Markus. Hans is recorded on vinyl in 1972 and Markus was recorded in 1998 presumably on disc. and Peter?

If it is Peter Jelosits, it was on vinyl. I have a vinyl album of the VBC singing this song, with solo for first verse and choir for second verse, but the solo on my album sounds a little different to the version sung by the VBC on this video. My album has them singing Nachthelle by Schubert, Kein schoener Land, Schlafe, mein Prinzchen, schlaf ein, Schubert's Wiegenlied (Schlafe, Schlafe, holder suesse Knabe). It's a very beautiful song. :-)

Vocal attributes of (presumed) Jelosits nonewithstanding, the second soloist has one of the most amazingly focused and powerful treble voices I ever have heard. I would be eager to find out who he was and to try to find additional recordings.

The 2nd boy has great vocal abilities, but he lecks feeling. Keeping in mind that it's a lullaby he's singing - it's sung way too loudly. Baby's gonna do anything but sleep. I liked the 1st boy (Hans Buchhierl) most, since he senses the mood of he song best. His voice - like a soft summer rain on skin.
