Magnifique Femme.

By far her very best interview in French and quite possibly the most fascinating Callas personal narrative in existence, comparable to the (very brief) 1957 Athens interview in Greek. What an artist, expressing immense respect and loyalty to her music and professionalism. We are so lucky to have this rare jewel, thank you!

14.40 Maria Callas : In 1947, finally I was lucky to meet the tenor Zenatello who was looking for a Giocconda for the Arena de Verona. I got a contract for this opera in Verona. Then they did not call me back, because my voice was unusual, not Italian, they were chocked in a way even if they liked it. That is why Labrocca, the Scala 's director did not engage me. And when the Scala protests you, no other opera wants you. And at last, Tulio Serafin called me back for an Isolde role in Venice, not for good heart, but because he needed me. We must not have any illusions, people offers you something to obtain another thing for them. 17.40 M. C : I Finally got entered La Scala in 1952, after great success in other towns in Italy and abroad. 21.00 M. B : How do you prepare a role? M. C : You must go inside the character, understand the background, the way of life.. 22.50 M. B : What helps you the best? Music or words? M. C : First music, and overall, understand the composer. M. B : So you must study composer 's biography? M. C : No, the music alone helps us to understand and know what is the composer made of. 23.50 M. B : I noticed that you insisted a few years ago on the fact that opera is overall théâtre, where singers must act. M. C : Yes, opera can be very boring, if there is only the voice. You must give the public the illusion of something true, alive. Everybody in the company must work to persuade the public. And for many years, then it was the honeymoon

Merci pour cet entretien radio. Je suis tres curieuse a propos de votre (Mr A.) impressionante collection de videos... a suivre... merci encore :-) This talk, upon listening to it a second time, is just amazing. So much wisdom, so much heart, so much beauty in it. It is difficult to put it into words. Many decades after it initially happened, everything in there still is relevant. Thank you Madame Callas, thank you, really, for the music, for the interview, for everything...

25.00 Micheline Banzet : Do you think that it is still possible nowadays to bring together a quality theater company? 26.20 M. Callas : They will not like what I m saying, but I think it is quite almost impossible. There are nice voices, but they don t have the sensitivity, they Don t take time enough, too much in a hurry, jumping from some place to another to sing. They want to earn much money, quickly. You have to know how to make the gestures, have the good diction, respect the music. 28.10 M. B : When you were young, did you take enough time? M. C : Yes, I always took the time. In Greece, we used to rehearse during 6 months. We were exhausted, but we were well prepared. And I got used to stay often alone to prepare my roles. M. B : One can say that you are not worldly? M. C : I like being withe people around, but not too much. After 2 hours, I have to find myself alone. I like watching TV, I kept a childish side, I like westerns, detectives, not being always in the tragic and dramatic heavy representations. 29.40 M.B : How do you prepare an operatic role? 29.40 M. C: I have to read the music first, and little by little, I can feel the drama, the entire creation as a whole. It is like a world in us, it is walled up in us. You have to create it, and work on the details, but you see almost as a vision what it should be at last. 30.45 M. B : This reminds me the words of a composer who said that the genius for a composer is when he has a clear and sudden vision like what you see with a lightening during a storm. And a genius composer is the one who can find back and recreate this vision. So, I would say, a genius singer is the one who can feel that vision and recreate it. 32.30 M.B: And you can find difficulties with the partner, you cannot chose him? M. C : Yes, but there is a very lovely thing, between us. We together feel like having wings, we feel huge, as if you can fill the whole theater. Like a trance. But sometimes, when you're doubt, you feel like being tiny and escape from the stage. 34.00 M.B: Because you can also criticize yourself? Yes, after a representation, we calculate, we think about the failures. M. B : And do you have sincere friends who criticize you? M. C : Yes, but they must choose the right moment to speak to you. I am a type of person who cannot be criticized in a rough way. One cannot give me an advice in a bad way. But with kindness, one can obtain everything from me, and I say everything, even make me stupid.

You are always faithful to the rendez-vous, dear Dana !!! We hope you understand the essence of this exciting interview. Callas had a very lucid vision of the future: "I am afraid because the public has set me very high and, when I will fall, the fall will be terrible ..." (51.05) There is also this sentence: "If one listens to me carefully, I am sure that one who has sensitivity can understand who I am ..." (23.42)

Avrebbe cantato Salomè altrettanto bene in italiano o in francese.

Micheline Banzet (2.10) "Are you American or Greek?" Maria Callas I was born in America, I have pure Greek blood, and I married an Italian. 3.10. M. B. : Why did you start to sing? M. C. : Because I ve been pushed to sing, by my family, especially by my mother. At age of 13, I went to Greece and my mother decided of my singing career. So, education I did t have, unfortunately. 3.50 M. B : Do you think that Fate drove your life? M. C : I think I am a Fate 's creature. But Fate is not enough, you must work. And, besides I did t think I had a voice, but I always gained scholarships, so that I was conforted in having talent. 4.00 M. B : You quickly found it pleasant to play in a théâtre? 5.25 M. C : I was not afraid at all, when I was young. being on scene seemed natural to me. Now, the more I m famous, the more I am afraid. When I studied at the conservatoire, I was lucky to have Elvira de Hidalgo as a teacher. She taught me the Bel Canto schooling. This schooling doesn't exist any more. 7.50 M. B : You had to learn a long time before being famous? M. C : Yes, I had an 8 years career first in Greece and there, we had 6 months to prepare an opera. And we were helped by good conductors to get a strong base, the bones. 10.40 M.C.When I left Greece for America, I was proposed by the Met roles that did not fit me. People were wondering why I turned down the proposals. But it is a quality I have, to know how to say NO. It is not being capricious, it is wisdom, patience. M. B. : And intelligence. M. C : Yes, because people sometimes want you to do something bad, that is not good for you. Nowadays,
