This was Callas's test recording for EMI Columbia. She sings Mozart with great expertise and the breath control is marvelous. This is such a demanding aria and Callas just tosses it off as if she were talking. It is so spontaneous and effortless.

Walter Legge wrote that she sightread the aria. She seemed more sure-footed in the second take, which makes perfect sense if the first was merely sightread.

The beginning of the first recording sounds lighter, more natural and effortless than the first one. The end of the second recording is more agile. They both contain the features I love in the early Callas' bel canto singing.

I don't think Callas' voice was suited to Mozart. I think she probably knew it too because she only sang one Mozart role and that was Konstanze in Entfuerung aus dem Serail - a role that would have better enabled her to display her formidable coloratura technique and made more use of her strong chest voice..
