I don’t understand all the hate on this particular example of Callas. She is in superb voice to me with clear vowels and even registers and no wobble/straining on her high notes. Definitely one of the best recordings of this aria. And the best pronunciation ever on each Maledizione!

I love her very much, and there is a lot to admire here -- great drama, wonderful legato, long lines. I think it's better than the 1954 studio version too. But truth be told, it wasn't her best aria, and it tended to exacerbate her technical issues. In particular, there are quite a few bottled vowels here, particularly in the lower middle voice, just above the chest register. That area of the voice was always problematic for her, so I suspect that the bottled vowels were a way to deal with it, particularly during this period of her career and onwards.

@@ER1CwC I hear that and fair enough. Still though compared to today’s standards I’d hardly say her lower middle was bottled 😭 I also like this one interpretatively more than the 1954

@@hodgrix I agree with that. She had a well-developed lower register, which sadly can't be said for many today. But during this time period, people like Milanov and especially Tebaldi were just better suited to this rep. Which is ok!

Sono stufo sentire chiacchiere sulla voce della Callas. Registri alti medi basi, voce imbottigliata, voce stridula eccetera eccetera, La Callas non è una cantante, non va paragonata alla Sutherland alla Caballe’ e tanto meno alla Tebaldi. La Callas è assestante, può piacere come può non piacere, ma scrivere sciocchezze sul suo approccio con il canto e le sue capacità musicali e la musica in senso lato, per denigrare l’artista, dopo un po’ stanca.

I don't begin to understand why people inmediately reject Callas' Leonora. It is absolutely pure drama, and GOD does she deliver the text. One can hear the perspective she has on the character based on the colors and articulations she choses which, by the way, she creates WITHIN the singing line. This, of course, is nothing new to those familiar with La Divina's art, but I find that this aspect of her interpretative strength is accentuated in this role, maybe because of the absence of virtuosistic passages, present in Norma, Pirata, Traviata, Lucia, even Trovatore.
