Mariachi Cascabel, from Rio Grande City High School in Rio Grande City, Texas, was one of six groups who made the finals in the 28th Annual Mariachi Extravaganza National Group Competition in November 2022. The group performed "Tema Cascabel" and Orgullo Ser Mariachi" under the direction of Mariachi Director Marcos Zarate. Assistant directors are Jaime Paz, Gabriel Velasquez and David Gonzalez.

The Mariachi Extravaganza hosts the largest, longest running and most competitive National Mariachi Competitions for middle school, high school and college/university groups in the U.S. It is the largest gathering of the greatest mariachi talent in the world. The event is produced by San Antonio based MPR (Muñoz Public Relations) whose mission is to utilize the mariachi music platform to promote higher education and cultural preservation among Hispanic youth.
