While Butterfly era is one of my favorite eras because i really love her soulful and sexy tone, i should admit that TEOM 2005 mid belts were stronger and more consistent. 2005 as a whole was a really good year for her voice. But she "ruined" it in 2006 with TAOM Tour. That tour (along with Rainbow and All The Hits Tour, which are totally unrelated to the video, but i just want to mention them) should've never existed.

Technically speaking Butterfly was superio in every way. However, there are some aspects of the teom era that allowed her more soulful sultry sound to come throug much more, and she was much more confident of a person in teom which really showed through her stage presence. People like to act as if the Butterfly era was the "downfall" of Mariah vocally and I've always felt that was a load of crap. Her voice did change, but her ability to do everything was still there. Mind you, her voice was still healthy enough to support her upper belts. Not the greatest era of her voice, but certainly better than TEOM era. TEOM era had really standout moments, but only because she brought back her confidence to the stage. Her voice in 2005, compared to the Charmbracelet era, was truly on the decline and not very consistent.

It's complicated with these eras. Technically 1997-1998 had better vocals since her decline was just starting. However, she was still singing like she had in 1995-1996 and was adjusting, which made her vocal change very apparent. With 2005-2006, her voice was in better condition for most of 2005 than the butterfly era, but her singing style was more accommodated to her voice then. She didn't have the same confidence she had in the 90's, so she held back in some ways. I would say both are great overall. Butterfly takes the edge.
