This is why Mariah is legendary. People think it's because of her range. It's her improvisational skills. I'm sure she didn't hit all of the expected $ notes because her voice was tired, but she is able to improvise runs and dance all around the melody that you think she sang the song differently because she just intended/wanted to. She just makes it seem like she re-mixed her own song and most people are none-the-wiser. That heiffa can sing circles around most other singers with just 1 octave --- the 1st two verses of her version of Stevie Wonder's "You & I," case and point.

This Live 8 performance by Mariah (the whole set, including Hero and WBT) is one of my favorite performances of hers. This is at a time when she was already past her prime (1990-1997 Mariah would have given absolutely flawless and effortless vocals), but still giving great vocals by ANY standard. And of course, her always-beautiful tone. Plus the sincerity in her eyes when she sings - which comes, I guess, with singing songs that she herself wrote. But even more than all these, it's just that she looked so HAPPY to be onstage performing. Like she was having the time of her life, giving her all, and being passionate about her music. Watching this performance, you can't help falling in love with her.
