Mariah had this rasp in her voice all her life!! She has nodules & she sings around them. Some newer singers like Adele, Miley & Demi removed them. Imagine Mariah not having a nodule. Oh what a voice it would be!! But that the same nodules made her capable of the whistle voice. So it’s a win/win for Mariah!! Congratulations Mariah Carey on her Songwriters Hall of Fame!!

@@erikatorresmusic_ Growing up in a family who loves music. I’ve heard a lot of female singers. Especially the vocal trinity. But there’s something about Mariah’s tone or voice quality that captured me. I don’t know , maybe it’s because of her timbre, or her ease in transitions using different parts of her voice. She can be heavy and she can be as light as a feather. Maybe the way she evoked different emotions in me or because she just sounds Expensive. Haha I ramble too much! And you’re welcome!! 😊😊

LOVED it. Did you miss the whistle? I come from the anatomy side of things. I went to her doctor's seminar on unusual voices where Mariah's chords were front and center. Her left vocal chord is split and both of her chords have hard nodes, the scar tissue kind. Her vocals never fully close all the way so she sings with a lot of air and rasp. Something that will continue to be a problem as she ages. Whitney was the one with the drug problem. Although Carey likes her wine, she had a pretty strict regimen of water and tea during vocal days and wine for days off.
@erikatorresmusic_2 жыл бұрын
Wow!! Thank you so much for sharing that!!! I knew she had what was likely a node but did not know her left vocal chord was split. Honestly incredible how she’s able to work around the injuries. The rasp is due to her having vocal nodules her whole life. That's why on a few parts is it might give off the illusion of strain, but overall she's sang well without them. Also at this point in her career she sang with a very chest sound throughout her belting range. Around 1993 she began using a more mixed and balanced belt that was healthier in the long run. It really blossomed throughout 1995-1996 where she mastered her belting for her vocal face.

She and Whitney are simply The Greatest Singers of All Time. I personally think it’s annoying when this generation tries to compare all these singers from this generation ( from 2000 till now) I like Ariana; she sings nice ,but I find it a bit offensive to keep comparing her to caliber of this woman’s singing. It is like constant need of approval they need to hear that she is at the same level- NOPE! Again, I like her, but Mariah is out of this world technically, range wise, musicality and her writing skills are just insane. No one- absolutely no artist living now , comes close to this Mariah or Whitney- NO ONE! Stop the abysmal comparison!

I’ve been near this debate since it started… trust me, it was only the media that originally compared Ariana to Mariah, and then older lambs started insulting Ariana and bashing her in retaliation. That is what really started the mess, specifically between the fan bases. Most fans of Ari, and Ariana herself has said countless times that Mariah Carey is obviously a better singer.

Mariah Carey has nodules on her folds. She sings though them and even uses them effects (true mastery, how many people uses the cause of their vocal damage and finds benefits. She has the nodules since childhood and her mom who is a professional Mezzo soprano graduated from Juilliard and vocal coach gave her some pointers and that's why she is so precise on her breath support otherwise they will blow open. She has to fo focus a lot but her entire repertoire is probably the most complex and demanding in mainstream music and from time to time she de develops ops fatigue so the nodules swell up and because of this she gains weight because she has to use corticosteroids and weight gain is a side effect of all steroids. A some'times her face swells up too and that shows proof of extended cycles of steroids pushing to almost develop Cushing syndrome., the "Dont you know" part is not mixed or head voice is actually a belt.with tampered tampered texture . She is capable of belting live up to an A5 (Yours at the Shinning through the rain special and wga4s ev3n amazing is that after that F5 she goes into whistle sings runs back to back for a total of 55 whistle notes

Congratulations on your graduation! With that being said, some schools really don’t dabble much into laryngeal vibratory mechanisms and the difference between them, there is almost no mix(M2) in this performance, Mariah is for the most part belting(M1) the whole time. Secondly, there are only two of the climatic F#5s that I hear lack full freedom and it’s the ones she phrased.(“you’ve got to say(free F#), the word(a bit constricted F#), to-night(free again). Her phrasing was a bit off there that’s all.

Nodules are a double-edged sword to her, allowing easy access to the low & whistle while hindering her consistency in vocal support for high notes. She is among the most inconsistent great vocalists, even in her prime. This is also why her head voice is underdeveloped, not well connected often.
