Beyonce is a pretty good singer, and definitely one of the top voices of her generation. With that said, she doesn't compare to Mariah's vocal status in her prime. Mariah's voice is truly legendary.

+Alisson Bryan Umm...no. Beyonce has the better head voice, because Mariah's head voice is nearly non-existent. Mariah's head voice is borderline falsetto. Beyonce's head voice, on the other hand, is much more operatic, and, on a technical perspective, it is much more developed. She has a vibrato, which I hardly hear on Mariah's so called head voice. Also Beyonce's vibrato, which is one of her best features, is more prominent, and she clearly has more control of it than Mariah, who barely has vibrato these days. Sure, Mariah has a beautiful vibrato (especially in that studio song All I Ever Wanted) that it can sound less overwhelming than Beyonce's potentially more annoying vibrato. For low notes, they both can go low, but Mariah has a tendency to lower her larynx since she is a soprano, while Beyonce, despite being a mezzo, hardly ever needs to push her voice to get to those low notes. Bey's low notes are more solid than Mariah's airy voice. Also, Beyonce can belt out soprano notes just as resonantly as some sopranos. Bey's tessitura is lower than Mariah's, so for Bey to be belting an E5 it would be the same as belting a G5 for Mariah. As for agility, they are both very agile, but different in their style. Mariah's melisma is done mostly in legato, while Bey uses a lot accented notes. Mariah prefers using the softer approach of singing in a breathy whisper (technically not healthy), while Beyonce prefers to sing more rough and choppy manner with her growls and grunts. As for the tones, Mariah's tone is more angelic and heavenly, while Beyonce's is more earthly.

You're a little wrong dude. Mariah doesn't has better headvoice, she doesn't often use it even it reaches C6 (or more) but Bee's headvoice goes up to F6 with great control and operatic. Mariah has the better low notes naturally (sound more deeply and manly) but she always lower her larynx when get 'em. And she also has the unstable larynx position. Mariah is Legend not cause of her technique but cause of her creation, musicianship, composition. And the most importantly, she is the pionneer.

Mariah has greater resonance, ease and flexibility in the upper register, a larger range, perfect intonation and timing (insane really), incredible artistry with her whistle register, and solid, husky low notes (to a certain point [she can go down to a well-developed Bb2 which is incredible for a soprano]), a beautiful falsetto, earth-shattering mid-belts, and more agility. Beyoncé has a more operatic and well-connected head voice, more natural low notes, incredible mid-belts and agility. Mariah's voice is more agile and she just has more technical vocal ability than Beyoncé. Although, I'm not denying Beyoncé is an incredible vocalist; she just cannot touch Mariah in her peak. (Tone and vibrato is a debate. I prefer Mariah's youthful, angelic tone instead of Beyoncé's "vanilla" tone. "Vanilla" meaning plain and bland. Mariah's vibrato in her prime was more 'even', even though it wasn't always used. Beyoncé's vibrato on the other hand seems more wiggled and unnatural.)

In addition, it may not be true, but this is my hypothesis: I feel like Mariah purposefully did not develop her head voice. At the time she was coming in to view, Whitney was popular and her head voice was her main vocal feat. Mariah was also trying to establish herself as… herself and not a Whitney-Houston-Rip-Off, so she used her whistle register instead.

beyonce's issues is that she tries too hard, rather than accepting her vocal abilities for what they are she tries to push herself beyond her limits. just because she makes herself loud for a few seconds does not give her added vocal range. mariah has natural talent, she's able to hold a note rather than scream it. ps. we all know beyonce was stuck on that same flat note up until the 2002-03 transition when she began makin her own album. those lessons did WONDERS for her. mariah won

Hearing early Mariah was like walking out onto your deck and enjoying the sun on your face, with the birds chirping a happy tune. All in all, a damn good day. Right. Mariah's voice was born and developed to sing in the manner in which she does. Beyonce's voice has been constantly and consistently trained to sound the way it does. Just look at her from 1999/2000, she could barely carry a live performance with the group, let alone by herself, she was always off key or out of breath. Also notice how you've never hear sing a difficult song a capella...it's because all that "power" is fabricated by microphone effects.

Comparatively, I would rather compare artists at the same ages, so when Beyonce was 23, use videos from when Mariah was 23. 90s Mariah was fantastic, and 2000s Beyonce was fantastic. So let's see what happens through Bey's 30s and Mimi's 40s.

Beyonce uses Echo and Shimmer to make her voice sound more powerful and fuller. If you take it all away you can hear how hollow it really is. She cannot control her vibrato, and when she sings in her upper range, shes more so hollering than she is belting. Mariah has more clarity and purity in her voice which allows her to ascend and descend so easily without losing any of the beauty and grace in her tone.

I like Mariah and she has an iconic voice but if I’m being 100% honest the Mariah of today cannot touch the Beyoncé of today vocally. Beyoncé’s vocal control alone wins with ease. Beyoncé’s voice has been trained. She has an impressive range, versatility, proper pronunciation/diction, vocal control, and excellent technique. The things Beyoncé can do with her voice is unreal. As great as Beyoncé is, Matthew deserves a great deal of credit for it. Beyoncé has done an excellent job maintaining it but Matthew provided her with the tools and made sure she understood discipline. For heaven’s sake he had destiny’s child on treadmills in heels while singing to understand and master vocal control. She earned her strips and place in the music industry! Gotta respect it. 👑💯

Bey is a more of a rhythm singer than a soul ballad singer but she can do both extremely well. See, fans know that Bey is more than she has shown at times mainly because like Stokley from Mint Condition said, you have to placate the commerical side of it. So she will have song that might not always show what she brings to the table though even on uptempo songs, she does great things with her voice and she is only 27 too so her voice is maturing and growing.

It does make sense because most entertainers aren't doing that. The ones who dance well, usually lip-synch(like Britney and Janet). The ones who sing great, aren't really dancers. Bey does both and many labels try to sign artists who can do that though it is hard to find because most can't do what she do. That's the appeal. More than anything else: Vocalist/performer. If it was all about her image, she would have been done A LONG TIME AGO because some have been wanting that for a while now.

for the past 6 yrs mariah's been head writer/producer on her albums and using the same producers for that amount of time over and over again (which is the opposite of what made her huge in the business). beyonce is smart, she writes her own stuff/takes other's demos/uses countless producers/writers, moves with the trends and is essentially all over the board wherever mariah has been stuck in the same place kicking out samey pop music for the past decade. i hope she expands out on her next album.

Elvis & the Beatles, were extraordinary for their time, but to imagine that they would reach the kind of success as they did today is unlikely, Elvis probably. Mariah's voice is undeniable, regardless of how she prefers to use it. It is her voice which is so unique and continues to carry her. Two different times, personally I believe it was easier then to hold the limelight than it is now and people didn't demand so much. Anyone could have been the Beatles, John Lennon aside.

Substance within the voice. Not lyrical definitions of what is, and what is not being attempted at to convey or express. I have to feel every seam of their voice, and there has to be something there, every vibration is throwing emotion or fluttering down. I don't know, its just that thing which is there, when you don't even know what they're saying, but you feel the intention of their vocal chord expressions.

She is not the best at both but is strong at both and the appeal is, there are fans who want BOTH and that sets her apart. I agree with you on the MC part. On the Beyonce part, true but they never said she sucked either and many people say that Bey is great in her how uses her voice and her great tempo and pitch. They are both talented, whether you like both or hate both and that will not change.

Exactly. You can find a Beyonce and you can find even brighter potential out there, but you can't find a Mariah Carey. Record labels are looking for just that, and have been looking for a long time, but nothing is coming up. Chrisette Michelle, Leona Lewis, Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson, and so on and so forth.

i think the main difference between the two singers is that mariah sings "vocal" genre songs whereas beyonce tends to sing in the pop/r&b genre...

There were some parts where Beyonce would just sing HEY and Mariah was actually sustaining the note. It takes more to sustain a hi note, on pitch.

Beyonce is the best singer out there, how there are so many people saying Mariah is absolutely beyond me! Watch this video people, all of Beyonces performances and so strong and unbelievably powerful and soulful her voice is incredible. See her whole body shake at 0:30 with the streghth of her voice! Neither of them are shit against the other if one is better it is really only slightly but in my opinion there is no one out there at the moment that can quite touch Beyonce voice.

Lets be realistic,who became famous as a rival of Whitney and for her 5 octave voice? and who became really famous for being in a girlgroup and entertaining? Beyonce was never really famous for hitting hight notes like Mariah and Whit!!! She has a great technique, but her timbre and just her voice is mediocre compared to Mariahs!!! We all know who sold over 250 millions records JUST with a gifted voice and know, who became famous with a rapper, girlgroup and dance songs. Please MC is the QUEEN.

They do have about the same range, discounting flagolet register. You might say it is ridiculous but....all you have to do is go to youtube and you will see it. Bey has 3.5 octaves according to her studio work and her highest note is the only note she has never done live. Every other note she has done. MC without flagolet is close to 4 octaves. It is what it is.

There are 8 octaves on a piano. That's where you get C5, C6, C3 for example. So there is a such thing as the 6th octave and Bey can definitely do 6th octave notes. She usually do C/C#6s. Bey has pretty good Head Voice skill so that's how she can reach the 6th octave unlike Patti Labelle who can go that high in her chest/mixed voice.

Phyllis is one of the greatest soul singers in music, for my own personal opinion. But Mariah hands down. Mariah doesn't focus on soul or emotion, though her voice innately promises it, but for her it is beauty. A beautiful voice of amazing heights of beauty. And there is a sadness which paralells within her voice, which I don't know how many hear, but it's there. What Mariah could have been if she were properly trained as an opera singer! Oh well..

I am A Beyonce fanatic and I think Mariah's voice comes out more natural than Beyonce's. Beyonce sounds kind of forced while Mariah's just comes out..but they both have incredible voices. However, Beyonce has the whole package. Back in the day Mariah was killing it, now she's just not doing anything. Today I would say Beyonce would outsing her. Plus Beyonce can do so much not only sing and stand up like a statue so..Beyonce has my vote.

Mariah, in her prime, could do anything Beyonce could do plus more. Have you heard her remixes of songs like Anytime you need a friend, Daydream, Honey? She does vocal acrobatic unlike those you've probably ever heard. Mariah practically started the acrobatics trend with her very first song, even Beyonce states that that song influenced her singing.

Where did you get the impression I said that. Imagine that their voices are like a piece of mirror. Some have a larger pane of mirror, maybe clearer, some mirror's are cracked or discolored, but sometimes everything comes together so well, even the smallest mirror has a luster which undeniably beautiful, and though some may not like the size, they cannot deny the light which it reflects. And with Beyonce I am not getting my full light, when compared to mirrors I am used to.

That's part of it, plus she's mainstream too. She's the mainstream singer to have the whistle register as their trademark though there were others before like Minnie(the queen of whistle register IMO) and going back further to Joyce Bryant. But because of this and MC does have incredible range and beauty in her voice as well as her earlier music, this is why many have that opinion. I don't as you know, but I am not saying she isn't great either.

The irony is, I am a fan of MC too. But I am fan of music more. You mentioned Phyliss. I agree with you. She was great and if she was more mainstream and didn't kill herself she would be even more renowned that she is. But again, it is all in what we prefer and that's cool thing about music. We can all have different opinions on it and it is ok.

That goes to Georgia Brown, who has way more range than mariah! ------------- Yes, she does but the thing is no one would ever say that GB is better than MC especially timbre wise and the way they use their voices. So whistle notes and even wide ranges means nothing really. It only matter if you know to use it right. Like Minnie could enunciate with her whistle notes. Now THAT is rare and unique not mention she used them like she was playing an instrument.
