Voice types doesn’t matter a lot, Resonance isn’t part of singing higher notes it’s about the depth/height of resonance. Even if a Mezzo can’t sing higher than a Soprano then that’s what it is, - Resonance doesn’t have to do anything with voice types.

Well Mariah inspired Beyoncé to sing so this is not fair. I’d say Beyoncè is good but she’s just not AS free in her upper belts as Mariah. Beyoncé also sounds like shes at the top of her range hitting anything about a E5 and you can tell there’s not as much embellishments or note changes. Also Mariah is more dynamic in her upper register she has more variation in color in that area than Beyoncé who sounds kind of the same

I love both but this video is not the way you compare them. 1. The note comparison starts at C5, when Bey is a Mezzo, how is that fair. Of course Mariah is going to soar on these notes. 2. The recording styles are different. Most of Mariah's stuff are from the 90's which studios back then actually utilized the acoustics of the studio to boost sound, dont get me wrong Mariah has massive resonance but that aided as well, whereas most songs are compressed in the mid to late 00's. These are just 2 things that should be taken into account if you are comparing them.

Beyonce's more resonant up to F5. Mariah starts beating her at F#5 and up. Mariah has more ease and freedom (and resonance at times), but Beyonce is more consistent and has greater dynamic control.

+Ornery0798 Just stating that her vocals during that era 2013/2014 Put forth a better effort to the Great Mariah than the clips you used (which seems to be mostly DIL/Bday with I Am and 4 scattered sparsely here and there). Her belting technique them was much more refined, her voice stood better against Mariah's resonance as it was fuller and her voice also became a lot more colorful in that Era..

+Magnum Opus yes your correct, Beyoncé is a mezzo but what makes her unique from other Mezzo's is the fact that she doesn't actually thin out the higher she goes she just uses a more head dominant mix above F#5 but she is still manages to maintain tonality, clarity, resonance, and support all the way to G#5 same as Mariah the only thing that Beyoncé doesn't have is ease above F5/F#5 notes because she's not a soprano but she makes up for it with her resonance and support

It’s hard to compare them. My preference is Beyoncé. When it comes to belting, Beyoncé is a bit more ragged around the edges (which I love). Mariah is fantastic, but much of what she is famous for (namely the very high notes) are whistle tones, not falsetto. Whistle tones are a highly specific technique that I think should be used sparingly. Mariah uses them too frequently for my taste. Side note; I’m a classical flautist, and whistle tones are a technique that flautists employ as well. If whistle tones are executed in the same way for singers as they are for flautists, they are very difficult to do right. They require extremely developed breath control, as they require almost no air whatsoever (Im speaking of the control it takes to perform them , I realize singing and flute playing employ different techniques). So…kudos to Mariah for doing them so well but they are NOT head voice, and thus comparing the high registers of these two ladies is difficult. Also, as has been mentioned in the above comments, Bey and Mariah have different ranges. Bey can go very high, but I think she excels above everybody else (including Mariah), in the tenor and low ranges. For me, I get more soul from Beyoncé as well. Mariah, to me, is more flash than substance, and always has been.

Mariah is so smooth and natural with her runs and riffs with amazing range, her voice is the focal point as a singer whereas Beyoncé is more technical and rough to match her focal point as an all around performer. Beyoncé has time on her side as a vocalist tho, she only gets better with time compared to Mariah who was in her clear cut legendary prime in the 90s (vocally)

Well first Bey holds back in the studio, and goes all out live, while Mimi goes in in the studio, but not so much live. If we're talking overall performer and vocalist and the whole package, Bey wins hands down, she forreal does everything. Although Mimi is a legend in her own right, and we all know she slays.
