" How can you have the last name Lopez? You're not puerto rican". "You speak spanish!?, i thought you were mixed with black or indian". A few years later People Magazine had her listed a year older and had her birthday at 1969. They were the only ones at the time that did. Every other magazine had 1970. As time went on and the internet came along and got popular you started seeing more of the 1969 b.s. and her being listed as a year older than she actually is. She graduated high school in 1988.

You do know African people didn’t exist back in the day in America but they were brought as slaves to America unfortunately and that’s why there was racism due to history. That’s why. Of course it’s much less now as history does fade people eventually move on but it was very much happening during 60s and 70s even. 80s still but less and so on. I was shocked about the revelation about her mother, but it all makes sense now. I think she’s come full circle and is now able to admit that their relationship wasn’t healthy. But I also think, and this comes from a Mariah fan, in Mariah saying she first felt unconditional love only from her fans, she displays a bit of narcissism there. You want that recognition and adulation to feel worthy, so you work yourself to death to be validated. I think a lot of performers are that way. I’m not saying bad about her, just being honest. She always says “ real fans”. I’ve been a fan since the beginning, but I’ve never felt I have to be obsessed with her or like every single thing she does to be considered that. I would say “ I didn’t care for or agree with that, but that’s just me”. A lot of people who come from these trauma bonded families don’t always have awareness of their own behavior. I do think she seems like a good person, and I hope she doesn’t feel like she needs the fame now to feel wholly loved.

People Magazine a few years later started printing her birthday as 1969 and printing she was a year older than she actually was. None of the other magazines changed their stats, just People Magazine. I think they’re the reason all the confusion started. It obviously ended up eventually spreading to the internet and caused more confusion. Mariah graduated high school in 1988 because she was born in 1970. If she was born in 1969 then that would mean she was held back a grade because she should’ve graduated in 1987.

She just wanted her to convey her feelings. Like the other commenter said, she wasn’t asking her in a way that she felt like she should feel guilty. It’s like asking a single mother if they felt guilty about not being able to provide their children with a two parent household….the answer varies. A mother could answer that she feels guilty for not being able to protect her children from scrutiny or from poverty, and that’s a real emotion and if even if she answered yes, she shouldn’t feel shamed for that having that feeling. It’s not necessarily expressing regret for the child being born rather it’s more expressing regret for not being able to provide your child the life you want them to have, the regret of not being able to protect them from ridicule or cruelty from other people’s ignorance.

Coming from Europe, it’s very surprising to hear people in an affluent neighbourhood would have shot at the house of an opera singer for her partner and children s color. In Europe the family would be paraded around in an affluent neighbourhood even 50 years ago because people like to surround themselves with „high art“ (classical music performers ).. can’t buy style and grace for sure, at least not in 60s America .. doesn’t mean it’s right to discriminate other people with less fancy jobs but it’s surprising they were SO uncultured

I grew up in the house directly next door and have to say her mother is completely mischaracterizing the situation. She was a very strange and unfriendly type who had 2 vicious Dobermans, one attacked me at age 6. Rumor had it the her son Morgan, who was deranged, killed one of the dogs. He also set their house on fire twice. The father was almost never there. Mariah was an infant so really nothing to tell there. They were not openly discriminated against. She was sort of the witch of the neighborhood…kind of actually appeared to be one. Very odd that she appears pretty normal here

It’s like a disease that affected everybody and whose scars she’s been covering up for so long (as Oprah said). I always felt like she was leaving shit out but didn’t know what exactly. I always hoped one day it would all just 🤮🤮🤮 come out. I remember this episode, but not all, so I’m grateful someone put this here. I wanted her mom to sing. Yes, "Through The Rain" was supposed to be about the story of Patricia and Alfred Roy Carey's marriage. That said, in the intervening years, Mariah has seen it a bit differently, and perhaps as less pure. She has wondered whether Pat really loved her father, or merely used him as a prop to stick it to her racist Irish Catholic mother. Either way, based on the stories Mariah tells, Pat was not prepared for the realities of having a black husband and biracial children...and would defect to using institutions of power (like the police) to her advantage as a white woman when it suited her.
