As an R&B head, i can confidently say Mariah The Scientist satisfies that R&B itch. I definitely consider her music to be R&B .... and she should be proud of it bc we NEEDED this NEW R&B sounds

I’m at 31:48 and I just want to say that I feel like people want to categorize Mariah as this pretty girl that’s just getting by on her looks but she proves in so many ways without even trying that she does have depth, intellect and talent. She didn’t choose her face and she didn’t let that be her meal ticket in life. Anybody who tries to pin that idea on her moving forward would just be a hater

Honestly I loved this convo bc we need to talk about tricky convos like this IN ORDER FOR CHANGE. People listen when uncomfortable convos come to light and many people share their thoughts/opinion. When theres more positive responses to this topic that shit WILL spread✨✨✨💌💌💌

The phrase “pick-me” isn’t a real thing, you’re either a woman who wants to be desired (as by default being the pursued gender) or you refuse to be desirable for whatever reason but if you’re attractive and you embrace it then that’s all there is to it…Cut the fabricated terminology that’s rooted in irrational thinking, now I will agree the host seems to be very much shallow 😏

Justin Bieber actually made somewhat of a r&b inspired album and their were songs where I could hear the inspiration on the album of “changes” I think they still put him in the category of pop and R&B. So she is correct they allow to not be put in a box and they are expanded in different categories.

I think R&B is a sound, not just a state of music. The sound of the music and how it appeals to an emotion, Not just if it appeals. I think for a song to be R&B it’s one that tells a story not just a state of a person but the story of the state of a person. It uses deep sounds and focuses on what is presenting not only through story but the emotion. So the rhythm is the feeling of the emotion while the singer is the teller. So the rhythm is being interpreted into words by the singer. Often times this process is completed by writing first then making the rhythm to tell the words. But the rhythm holds the emotion. This isn’t exclusive to tangible instruments. A persons voice can do both at the same time in a-cappella. While the singer presents the sound but infuses the sound into words.

Colorism is a touchy subject, this wasn't it for me...they lack too much understanding on the topic for it to even be a productive conversation they could of left this alone lol it wasnt hitting. There’s often a very weird need for light skin Black people to insert their own hurtful experiences as Black people and name that reverse colorism. It’s a very empty, and they lack basic understanding of what the actual conversation of colorism is about. Educate yourself please because nothing that was said had anything to do with what colorism really is, this was mostly a conversation on you victimizing yourself

Because we are always talking about how darker skin women that are dealing with racism and colorism but no one wants to hear the lighter skin experience as far as how we feel.. Some people automatically assume we're colorists or accused of it when genuinely, it's not like that. We're actually on your side. That was basically the point. She's getting backlash about how OTHER light skinned, ignorant people act. Yes I do feel as if she should at least acknowledge that it plays a role but at the same time, why does someone have to take accountability for something they cannot control? She gets treated badly by other black women because of maybe their experiences from lighter skin people, which is understandable but it's not fair because not every light skin person thinks or is that way.

Like for example I'm lighter than all of my sisters. I'm fully aware I may have more privileges but I've never been hurtful or a colorist towards any other black woman who was darker than me because of my family having different skin colors. So if someone that's darker than me is automatically irritated with me or accusing me of being a certain way without even really knowing, that's lowkey weird. That was her point, really. Because I embrace my blackness and part of that is embracing ALL colors of blackness so when people just assume it can hurt. Because I'm lighter skin means nothing. Maybe it does because of your experience but for me? It doesn't I still go through racism and colorism but in different forms. It may not be the same but it still hurts. We are all black and beautiful ❤️ let's remember that.

A light skinned person saying what they've gone through always makes some people angry. Like it or not people have hurt each other on both sides of the fence I noticed that the colorism conversation was centred on painting darker people as saints who are not capable of being mean to others because of complexion also and that's not being honest.

Y’all always try to deflect and try to make it seem like it isn’t a big deal for dark skinned people. It’s the exact same logic as racism just not as severe. That’s like when white people say they get killed by cops too. At the end of the day y’all are privileged and your experience will never be the same as a dark-skin. Even if you have experienced bullying, racism etc. it’s not colorism.

I’m a fan of both Mariah & Fab Socialism. Fab Socialism is not miserable but rather discusses topics that bring to light how miserable the world and our societal structures can be. A necessary conversation if you will. I love her content because it does force me to challenge my thinking and be aware of issues. I saw her video on Mariah and I think I commented something about how the colorism situation is blatant however Mariah is one hell of a writer and certainly talented. I think a lot of people have a tendency to not do much research on the creative process and motives of the artists they make assumptions about, and publicly. That said, Fab Socialism didn’t do anything wrong imo, she utilizes popular culture as a vehicle to bring awareness to less popular discussions and issues, especially in the Black community. Which is good, because it gets the typically disinterested viewer interested and gives them the opportunity to learn. She makes great content, and Mariah makes fantastic music. There were assumptions made for sure, but there’s a conversation there about how darker skinned women are given far less grace IN GENERAL, not just in comparison to Mariah. Anyways, I think they’re both great.

the colorism conversation was eh. I think they both missed the point whether it was intentional or just ignorance. Its wrong to say someone got their success only by being light skin but that does not discount that it has certain advantages. if she can admit that light skin privilege exists then why is it a shock for it to be a way for someone that looks like her to advance in the music industry. look at all of the major artists: nicki, Cardi, Beyonce, etc they are all light skin, I dont think that is a coincidence. the way you look matters and certain features such as light skin are seen as more desirable and marketable which is an advantage...

But the point is if they automatically assumed that you’re just successful because you’re light skin or just pretty. It’s not ignorance if a lot of light skin people or even people with pretty privilege have said the same thing over and over again. Same as darker skin people experience colorism. They went through that issue, spoke up about it, and have brought a light on to something a lot of other people have had as well. Not everyone wants to be marketed just because of how you look.

my thing is , y’all always acknowledge the successes of light skin women to justify colorism as if there’s not dark skin women who are as equally successful in the industry ( also just because someone isn’t as main stream doesn’t mean they aren’t successful) which is another thing that y’all try to do as well . i feel like oftentimes the black community divides & conquers instead of uniting . because lightskin or not , that is still very much a black woman representing you . we also have tems , sza , etc who are dark skin women who are killing the game right now

@@camariedcollier how many are successful ? im sure the number of lighter skinned tone women in the music industry outnumber their darker counterparts. please name them ? while success is subjective there are certain items especially in music: popularity, streams, relevance, accolades, financial compensation. the division comment is dismissive asl. there can be issues within a community and solving those issues would do better in uniting the community rather than ignoring an issue that disproportionately disadvantages one group. it’s like saying all lives matter, there is a group (those with darker skin) within a community that is historically marginalized and has to endure the consequences of social imbalance to this day such as longer prison sentences, less pay, lower marriage prospects, etc. why is one image of blackness the representation for an entire community ?it’s like you’re supporting the erasure of blackness by trying to have a singular representation. shouldn’t there be diversity to represent blackness in all shades and not the ones with the closest proximity towards whiteness ( which is an advantage ).

I think regarding the colorism thing, you say a light skinned women still represent all black women. But you may see yourself in darker skinned black women but they do not see themselves in you and thats why exact desired representation matters. Its interesting but real. Almost doesnt count in this situation apparently. Really appreciate the interview, nice conversation and relaxed.

There’s a difference between light skinned black women (Mariah) and being a light skinned biracial black woman (host). I also think saying that, highlighting the differences in our experiences as black women is important bc of privilege. That’s just me though.

Umm i think they’re allowed to have this because at the end of the day, when the color of skin is brought unto any convo it automatically becomes a topic of “colorism” which can make those affected very vulnerable no matter dark or light its literally the same . When darker skinned people feel as if something has been given to a lighter person only because they are light its usually because something was taken or nothing was given simply because they were dark if that makes sense . Which is completely fcked up! But its the truth lol and that it was taught to them

In My Nightmares is definitely an alternative song or just its own genre. Mariah is her own genre of music. She is making art not just music. I wish the interviewer knew her entire catalog to fully grasp these projects' beauty.
