This song should have won a Grammy. The lyrics are brilliant, incredibly raw and relatable. She blended her vocal style with Bone Thugs seamlessly and the song is incredibly original.

Coolio said crossroads shoulda won the mtv award - and whatever the other song was…. Short story longer- Mariah bone thugz and even coolio - childhood heroes. This song is sooo good. Forgot it for years until now this is my raw reaction. No one cares but me. Loved it then and since all those mix CDs I made in 2005 disappeared like hearing it first time.

This is still cold af. The hook is sooo good. Her writing has always been top tier in my opinion. Adlibs, vocal stacking, tone, smooth riffs, sheesh! 90’s and early 00’s is the golden era of RNB. Some of the greatest vocalist, writers, producers of all time. Music that feels like butter

Tommy was still bitter about the divorce but this album still sold even though he tried everything to sabotage her sales to make her cower under his wrath. Is** the gold standard. So many people still study the hell out of her voice and overall work today. And she's the one that the younger generations get compared to the most. Their fan bases try to diss her and say she's no longer great or a skilled vocalist. The reality is that Mariah is their fav's fav and their fav will NEVER reach such levels (strictly speaking music). Also, you can't take away greatness or legendary status, and one must never undermine one of the world's greatest musicians (not just a singer). Her highly acclaimed "Caution" album is up there with the work of the popular girls today but of course, the effects of ageism and lack of label push made it underperform. The fact that she can still explore and transform her sound time and time again proves her greatness.

Aside from her obvious skill in range and technique and feeling, her voice and tone are entirely unique. Some singers sing like other singers, but really no one's voice sounds like hers. Like when you here her it's always unmistakably her and no one else. Even her speaking voice is distinct.

+Jocosta Raynor Mariah wrote this by herself, Jermaine doesn't even have a writing credit on this song. It's only Mariah, Wish Bone, Krayzie Bone, and Stevie J. Wish and Krayzie wrote their own parts and Mariah wrote the rest. The only reason Stevie J is listed is because he probably changed a word or two so it would fit better after production. Mariah always writes her own songs (by herself most of the time) and her co writers really don't do much other than slightly edit it.

The symbolism of the music video is not talked about enough… love is a gamble. Disguising your feelings in public is a magical illusion you need to put out to keep moving to this world. Everything is a facade, like Vegas.

it's crazy, mariah had so many hits, but she should have had even more. it blows my mind that this song didn't go #1, it's an r&b masterpiece. it's right there on the level of say my name and other HUGE r&b hits of the close of the 90s and opening of the 00s. people say mariah didn't take risks but she is such a versatile talent... from classic r&b to modern r&b with hip hop influences to pop ballads to whatever, mariah's voice was able to become the defining sound of more than 2 decades. WOW. you honestly just have to sit in awe.

I agree. I was SO surprised when I found out that this song would have been what some call a "flop" but then when I saw that it wasn't promoted properly, it made complete sense. Such a wasted opportunity.

It didn't go to number 1 because it was limitedly released. Apparently her record label didn't agree with it being a single because they didn't like her hip-hop transition. Mariah has been quoted saying, "I'll always be upset "Breakdown" never got its shot."

Christian M It was because she was starting to loose steam due to the pop craze.Nysnc and Backstreet sound was coming n. You're right, so many of her songs should have went to the top during the Butterfly era including Butterfly. That song and this is song are such gems. It's a shame.
