I just rewatched the first season and came to realise that this scene somewhat parallels one of the last scenes of season 1. After the Russels' ball, Larry also walks her home and she's wearing another dress in a very similar shade of yellow. That time he's comforting her and doesn't follow her all the way up the steps, but I love how they brought back that scene and flipped it on its head

Quoting Louisa Jacobson in a recent interview : "I honestly feel like, especially in the last couple of interactions that they've had since he's been back from Newport in Season 2, she has maybe subconsciously been dying for him to kiss her, or she wants to say that she has feelings for him, wants to admit something, but can't. He reminds her about the engagement, and it's like, “Oh yeah, I forgot. Not only because my uncle's so sick but also, like, ‘F*ck, I don't want to talk about that in front of you because then we're facing the reality of the fact that we won't ever be together.’” It's just been building up in the last couple of interactions they've had, and finally, at the end of the night, it's that moment, right when she's rung the bell to go home. When the three of them were discussing Jack's patent, those two couldn't keep their eyes off each other that there were enough sparks to light up Union station! Season 3 better not start with a fast forwarded timeline a few months after this incident. I wanna see the wistful contemplations right after they get to the privacy of their bedrooms on this same day! Season 2 was a bit rushed, imo.

I don't think that was love, I think at the moment he was going off of that high you get when there's a spark between two people especially because that was uncharted territory for him and because of how forward that woman was, being older and widowed she was far more outward with what she wanted versus anyone in Larry's age range and that excited him. However, being cut off from that, I think he's realizing the perfect person for him has literally always been in his face and arguably his female "best friend". It's like it wasn't until the prospect of potentially losing her to marriage did it click for him, that deep down he's always had feeling for her but their friendship came first.
